Norwegian Signs Fleet-wide Antifouling Contract

Seven Seas Voyager has been applied with Nippon Paint Marine’s A-LF-Sea hull coating as part of a fleet-wide agreement with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (Norwegian)

Marine organisms such as barnacles and zebra mussels have been a long-standing nuisance to ship hulls, causing exterior damage, increased power and fuel consumption and environmental concerns. Samsung Heavy Uses Eco-friendly Paint for Vessels

South Korea's shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has applied a solvent-free coating on its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, saying it is the first case of a commercial ship applying such an eco-friendly paint.According to the company, it has successfully applied the solvent-free coating, which it jointly developed with Norwegian paint firm Jotun, to its 7,500 cubic-meter LNG carrier. A solvent is a chemical additive used to reduce the viscosity of paints for better application.Backed by the fact that there is virtually no solvent, a type of volatile organic compound, the solvent-free coating is eco-friendly paint which is safe from fire and explosion hazards and harmless to humans.

PPG’s (NYSE: PPG) protective and marine coatings business will showcase four of its’ premium marine coatings solutions at SMM event in Hamburg. Amongst these is one of PPG’s most recent product innovations, the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290 fouling release coating. Its 100% silicone binder fouling release system utilizes a breakthrough dynamic surface regeneration technology to eliminate slime problems and dramatically increase fuel savings compared to existing fouling release products.

EURONAV Selects Jotun’s HPS for Two Suezmax Vessels

EURONAV has selected Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) for two of its Suezmax vessels. The agreement will see Samsung-built sister ships M/T Cap Guillaume and M/T Cap Philippe receive coatings of Jotun’s advanced SeaQuantum X200 antifouling, alongside full suites of measurement sensors applied to their hulls. The applications, taking place at upcoming dry dockings at Keppel Shipyard in Singapore, will increase vessel efficiency, cut fuel costs and reduce CO2 emissions substantially compared to standard market alternatives.

Debuting its latest offering at Posidonia 2016, PPG’s protective and marine coatings business has unveiled a new protective system for dry bulk carrier cargo holds: the PPG SIGMASHIELD MTC system, built on coating technology that comprises a PPG SIGMASHIELD PRIME undercoat and PPG SIGMASHIELD MTC topcoat. Designed specifically for the cargo holds of dry bulk carriers, the system’s chemistry maximizes technical performance and offers a commercially sound solution for spot and full repairs as well as for application at newbuild, PPG said.

Petronas Chooses Jotun Antifoulings

Petronas has selected Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions (HPS) antifouling system for two LNG vessels chartered from MISC. The advanced antifouling coatings and a full suite of performance measurement sensors will now be applied to Seri Amanah and Puteri Zamrud in a move that will increase vessel efficiency, cut fuel costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 10 percent, according to Jotun. Jotun’s antifouling coatings limit the growth of organisms on hulls and HPS provide measurable hydrodynamic performance gain.

The data revealed that Gearbulk’s Penguin Arrow, coated with Jotun’s SeaQuantum X200 in September 2010, recorded a staggering estimated fuel saving and CO2 emission reduction of $1.5 million and 12,055 metric tons respectively, across the 60-month period. Jotun’s proprietary HPS offer combines the application of an advanced antifouling coating, a specialized application procedure, a full suite of sensors that record hull performance and a high performance guarantee.

UASC Selects Jotun Coatings for 11 New Containerships

As part of a $2.3 billion newbuilding program, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has reached an agreement with Jotun for the provision of antifouling coatings for 11 new container vessels. The agreement marks the first time the companies have worked together on marine antifouling hull coatings. US Navy Orders Demonstration Craft from Willard Marine

Willard Marine, Inc. (WMI) announced it has been selected through a solicitation process to supply a demonstration model of a new, advanced combatant craft for the U.S. Navy under an SBIR contract modification awarded to Structural Composites, Inc. Under the contract, WMI will design, construct and test a fleet-ready version of an advanced combatant craft incorporating foam/fiberglass extrusion technology developed by Structural Composites. The boat will be based on WMI’s standard U.S. Navy MK 3 RIB with a lightweight Steyr diesel engine and sterndrive propulsion.

PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business is celebrating the 20th anniversary of polysiloxane coatings, for which PPG was granted the first patent on Jan. 4, 1994. Tim Knavish, PPG vice president, protective and marine coatings, said polysiloxane coatings have revolutionized the protective and marine coatings industry, expanding into applications such as civil infrastructure, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), government, water and wastewater, petrochemical, offshore, rail, power generation and wind energy.
