China’s Vice President Wang Qishan visited the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) at the Port of Hamburg.Wang was greeted by the Chairwoman of the Executive Board of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), Angela Titzrath, Hamburg’s First Mayor, Dr Peter Tschentscher, and representatives of the Chinese container shipping company Cosco Shipping Lines. Wang headed a 40-strong party of high-ranking Chinese government officials, and the terminal operator said the visit emphasizes Hamburg’s importance as a global trade gateway.The largest container vessels of Chinese shipping company Cosco Shipping Lines are handled at the facility of Container Terminal Tollerort every week. On Thursday, for instance, the Cosco Shipping Aries was docked at the CTT quayside.
First Hybrid Straddle Carriers at Hamburg Port
The port of Hamburg has for the first time introduced two straddle carriers with environmentally friendly hybrid engines.The first two energy saving, low emissions straddle carriers with hybrid engines are being used to transport containers between the ship, the yard, the rail terminal and the truck gate at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT).According to a press release frm the company, the two prototypes are expected to use at least 15 percent less diesel than their predecessors. HHLA Transports Ship Propeller for Hyundai Supreme
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) loaded the biggest ship propeller in the world onto a vessel. The “HHLA IV” floating crane brought the gigantic 110-tonne object to the port of Waltershof, where it was hoisted onto the “Hyundai Supreme” container ship.It was the most powerful ship propeller to have ever been lifted by the hook of a HHLA floating crane. Although HHLA regularly loads the specialised products of Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH (MMG) onto ships in Hamburg, the latest propeller, with a weight of 110 tonnes and a diameter of 10.50 metres, surpassed anything that had ever been seen at the port before.MMG is a leading manufacturer of ship propellers.
HHLA: New Mega-Ship Gantry Cranes Off to a Strong Start
The COSCO Netherlands was the first ship to be processed by the five new container gantry cranes at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT), which are equipped to handle ships with a capacity of more than 20,000 standard containers (TEU). Three of these high-performance gantry cranes have been put into service at Tollerort in the last few days. Two identical gantry cranes have been processing mega-ships at berth 5 since November 2016. On Friday morning, 20 October, the approximately 13,400 TEU-capacity COSCO Netherlands arrived at CTT and left again on Saturday night. During this time, the mega-ship gantry cranes discharged and loaded approximately 7,000 TEU onto the ship.

Port of Hamburg terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logisitik AG (HHLA) is making further preparations for the latest generation of mega-ships. It has ordered two new container gantry cranes for its Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT), which will be able to handle ships with a capacity of 20,000 standard containers (TEU). HHLA had only just recently ordered three new cranes for HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai. The ultra-modern container gantry cranes for CTT will be supplied by the Liebherr Company and produced in Germany and Ireland. 200th Airbus A320 Shipset Loaded for China
The 200th shipset for Airbus’s A-320 final assembly line (FAL) in Tianjin, China, was loaded on to the containership COSCO Hope at HHLA’s Container Terminal Tollerort on July 28 and dispatched onwards to Asia. Transport by sea to Tianjin lasts around 40 days. Four ‘shipsets’ per month are transported by containership from the Port of Hamburg to Tianjin. The forward and rear fuselages, tailplane and rudder, the main landing gear doors and the inner landing flaps are each transported by a special transport craft from Airbus pier in Finkenwerder to HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort.
Port of Hamburg Receives Eight Newbuildings
The Port of Hamburg receives the first of a total of eight 13,380-TEU COSCO newbuildings at HHLA’s Container Terminal Tollerort. Delivered at the end of February, the completed containership Cosco Belgium will berth in Hamburg on April 11. Operating under the Hong Kong flag, this ULCC is 366 meters long, 51 meters wide and when fully loaded has a draft of 15.5 meters. She is the first of altogether eight 13,380 TEU (20-feet standard container) vessels ordered by Cosco from the Chinese NACKS shipyard in April 2008.
CHKY Alliance Reorganizes Far East Srvcs
The CKYH Alliance (COSCON, “K” Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping) has reorganized its CNEU Far East service, and is once again offering two independent services. At the end of the season in December 2008 the AE-N and AE-S services had been combined into a single service. With the arrival in Hamburg of the COSCO Africa on 20 May and the COSCO Guangzhou on 23 May, the two original round trips have been restored. Under the AE-N service, the COSCO Guangzhou (9,469 TEU) regularly sails from Dalian via Xingang (Tianjin), Qingdao, Ningbo, Nansha (Guangzhou), Singapore and Rotterdam to Hamburg, Europe’s most important seaport for trade with China and the Far East.

Last month saw the encounter of two Chinese ships of a very special kind at the Port of Hamburg. On 19 November 2008 the recently built 10,000 TEU vessel Cosco Indian Ocean, belonging to the Cosco Container Lines shipping company, docked at the HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort. Measuring some 1,148 ft in length, the Cosco Indian Ocean was on its maiden voyage. This was its first visit to Hamburg. The container giant is the third of four identical ships built for Cosco at Hyundai's Ulsan shipyard in South Korea. With a draught of 47.5 ft, the ship has a deadweight of 111,414 tons.
