In light of the recent shipping vessel attack on the Suez Canal (Suez Canal Authority, August 31st, 2013), Nexus Consulting is announcing the release of recommendations for merchant vessels traveling through the canal. Maritime Security Firm Urges Suez Canal Precautions

Heightened security should be implemented now on all merchant ships transiting the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, UK Maritime security company GoAGT advises shipmasters. The warning comes after reports that the "Cosco Asia", a Panamanian registered ship, was attacked on Saturday while transiting the Canal. Egyptian officials say they foiled the attack, which was aimed at disrupting shipping in the Canal. He added: “An unarmed security adviser should be considered for all vessels transiting the Mediterranean prior to embarking armed guards in high risk areas. They can assist crews in identifying potential threats and are able to assist the Masters and their crews communicating and gathering intelligence.

The Panama-flagged container ship 'Cosco Asia' has been targeted by terrorists attempting to block the vital canal system, but the attack was foiled by the Egyptian Army, reports Al Jazeera, citing a statement by the Head of the Suez Canal Authority. Container Ship Christened at COSCO

On July 26, the 10000-TEU container ship COSCO Asia was christened in South Korea. The christening ceremony was grandly held at HHI's shipyard in Ulsan. Executive Vice President Zhang Fusheng and Vice President Chen Hongsheng of COSCO Group were presented at the ceremony. COSCO Asia is the first of four such vessels being built for COSCO by HHI's shipyard. With maximum carrying capacity of 10062 TEUs, COSCO Asia is the largest container vessel among COSCO fleet. The vessel realized a high-level of automation and is very environmentally friendly. It was classed by Lloyd's Register to stringent environmental standards, reflecting COSCO's commitment to its UN Global Compact responsibilities.
