New Intermodal Facility Coming to Port of Mobile
The Alabama Port Authority board of directors recently approved a $2.042 million purchase of 272 acres in Montgomery, Ala., to construct an inland container intermodal transfer (ICTF) facility. The project will extend intermodal rail service from the Port Authorityâs container intermodal terminal at the Port of Mobile in support of Alabama regional growth in manufacturing, retail, distribution, and agribusiness sectors.âThis project will provide our shippers cost-competitive transportation services to and from one of the nationâs fastest growth containerized cargo gateways,â said John C.

Funding Approved for Georgiaâs New Inland Terminal
At its July board meeting, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) approved a spending package of $19.7 million to construct the Appalachian Regional Port in Chatsworth, Murray County, Ga. The funds consist of $10 million from the state of Georgia and $9.7 million from the GPA. In addition, CSX is making off-site improvements to facilitate the new inland port. Murray County purchased the land at a cost of $700,000 and deeded the site to GPA. For the land purchase, $500,000 came from a state economic development grant and $200,000 from the Murray County Economic Development Authority. "We would like to thank our Board of Directors, Governor Deal, the state of Georgia, Murray County and CSX Transportation for making this incredible partnership possible," said Executive Director Griff Lynch.
Record Growth Continues at Georgia's Ports
The Georgia Ports Authority reported that its terminals in Brunswick and Savannah moved a combined 2.79 million tons of freight in October, a record for the authority. "Strong growth across all key sectors of our business is an indication that our ports are reaching a larger and more diverse customer base," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. Port Manatee's Key Role as Drought Impacts US Corn Production
Tampa Bay, Florida, port receives cargo of Brazilian corn to offset draught-stricken US production shortfalls. The 620-foot-long M/V King Fraser docks at Port Manatee to discharge more than 52,000 tons of Brazilian-produced corn to be used for animal feed. In its Nov. 9 World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimate report, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated the drought is impacting approximately 75 percent of U.S. corn production and will continue into 2013. OIMOS Expands Operations
Offshore Inland Marine and Oilfield Services (OIMOS) today announced plans to expand operations at the Port of Pensacola thanks to shore-side improvements at the Port allowing more vessel service calls at Offshore Inlandâs growing subsea support business base there. These plans include the installation of a 1200-amp shore power terminal, and a pier-side sewage discharge station to allow for additional service and support for Port of Pensacola customers. Seven warehouses with 265,000 square feet of available indoor storage area. Covered railcar loading and unloading.
ACL Names Braman VP, COO Transportation
American Commercial Lines Inc. announced that William A. Braman, II has been appointed to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Transportation Services. Braman joined ACL in February 2009 as Vice President and General Manager, Transportation Services. Prior to joining ACL, Braman held the position of Division Manager for CSX Transportation (CSXT), in which he led more than 2,000 employees in operations and customer service for the northeastern U.S. A transportation industry veteran, Braman began his career with CSXT in 1971 as a switchman and worked his way up through the ranks to a series of senior positions, including Assistant Vice President Automotive Operations and Assistant Vice President Service Design.
