Dutch shipbuilding group Damen has signed its first contact with ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) manufacturer ERMA FIRST. The Greek manufacturer ERMA FIRST will supply its oneTANK, which is the world’s smallest BWTS, using chemical injection methods to clean ships’ ballast water.Damen Green Solutions has a broad selection of BWTS in its range, offering shipowners various capacities and techniques in treating their ballast water. With the addition of the ERMA FIRST oneTANK, Damen can provide clients with a solution that is not only small, but also modular.

Dutch shipbuilding conglomerate Damen Shipyards Group has unveiled a Ballast Water Pre Filtration Barge (BWPF) to assist vessels in complying with the IMO's Ballast Water Management Convention.The new legislation came into force on September 8th 2019 and Damen Green Solutions has prepared a range of products and services to assist its clients in meeting the requirements of the new legislation.The globally operating company with more than 50 shipyards, repair yards, and related companies said in a press note that the BWPF Barge can process up to 4,000 m3 water per hour with a sediment level anything between 50 and 1,500 mg per liter.Filtration is available between 10 and 50 micron, to suit varying sediment sizes.

German maritime waste specialist Jongen GmbH has taken delivery of a Damen InvaSave 300 mobile ballast water treatment system (BWTS), which will protect the Elbe from invasive Species.Jongen can now offer IMO-certified ballast water treatment services to ship operators needing to comply with the latest ballast water regulations that came into effect on 8 September 2019.Jongen GmbH delivers waste oil, waste water, and the waste removal services for maritime traffic in the Port of Hamburg. Dutch shipbuilding giant and Maris Projects, a player in marine and oceanographic data management services,  have joined forces to tackle the issue of invasive Sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean region – including the Dutch Caribbean Islands.The partners are working towards the developments of a holistic solution. The work of the two companies is expected to greatly increase knowledge of bio-processing, leading to the design of efficient and scalable technologies with the capability to deliver both environmental and socio-economic benefits.A significant – and to date, inexplicable – rise in the quantity of Sargassum in Caribbean waters and along its shores, has been recorded in recent years. Since the Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention entered into force on September 8, 2017, newbuild vessels have to meet the D2 standard of the Ballast Water Management Convention. In this situation, the Inland Coastal Tanker Elena H. will make her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Argentina on her own keel. Following her arrival, she will remain permanently in local waters.Instead of installing a ballast water management system (BWMS) on board the vessel for this single trip, Damen’s InvaSave supplied clean D2-standard ballast water for ballasting of the vessel in the Netherlands.

Ship owners are now able to treat their unmanaged ballast water or load cleaned ballast water in eight different Northern European ports using Damen’s unique IMO certified InvaSave ballast water management system. In a cooperation between Damen Green Solutions and Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC), this ballast water reception/bunkering service will be available in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Brest, Dunkerque, Vlissingen, Den Helder, Stellendam and Harlingen. Damen’s InvaSave is the world’s first external ballast water treatment unit designed primarily to offer ship owners a port-based ballast water solution. With this cooperation, vessels coming into these eight ports will be able to take advantage of a one-stop-shop for their ballast water treatment requirements.

Following on from the electrification of heavy duty mobility in the form of cars, buses, automated guided vehicles and tractor units, VDL Groep intends to continue help reducing the emissions from means of transport. The family-owned international industrial business headquartered in Eindhoven will now be supplying systems for ships that comply with the latest international requirements on the emission of harmful substances. For this project, VDL has entered into a joint venture with AEC Maritime, the Eindhoven-based specialist in air cleaning, that develops and markets filter systems for ships. These so-called scrubbers filter the sulphur particles and other components from the exhaust gases emitted by ship engines.

Damen Green Solutions (DGS) in partnership with Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC) and AEC, the scrubber supplier, is trialling a new technique for retrofitting scrubbers. Designated the Modular Approach, this new process is designed to cut the time that a vessel typically needs to spend in dock from two or more weeks to just a few days. This dramatic reduction in downtime, in combination with a more cost-efficient, certified scrubber, will be welcomed by ship owners and operators. The first installation of this type is already underway for the RoRo cargo vessel Stena Scotia.

Damen said its mobile ballast water treatment system has received type approval from the International Maritime Organization (IMO). An external ballast water treatment unit designed primarily for use in ports and harbors, the Damen InvaSave treats ballast water to the IMO D-2 standard, for ballast water received from inbound ships. It can also deliver water treated to the same standard to outbound vessels. Its mobile, containerized format means that it can be operated from the dockside or from onboard a vessel alongside, receiving or delivering water to a ship.

Damen Green Solutions has signed a letter of intent with Norwegian company TeamTec to supply and service the AVITALISTM ballast water treatment system. The system combines filtration and a proven, eco-friendly chemical treatment solution optimized for medium-sized to large vessels. The system is highly effective in water of any salinity, turbidity or temperature. The intention is to advance to a full partnership by the end of 2016. Currently AVITALISTM is undergoing ship board testing IMO type approval and USCG land-based testing.

Two innovators in delivering unique solutions for the maritime sector, Damen Green Solutions and Evoqua Water Technologies will launch the DAMEN BALCON EC 1500 powered by the SeaCURE ballast water management system (BWMS) at SMM Hamburg. The BALCON containerized deck house has been developed as a direct result of customer demand for fast plug and play installation in the yard. BALCON is touted as an ideal ‘plug and play’ solution, with the absolute minimum of downtime for the vessel.

Successful shipboard testing has shown that Damen Green Solutions’ InvaSave mobile ballast water treatment solution is capable of providing an IMO type approved backup in a port in the event of a failure in a vessel’s on board treatment systems to uptake or discharge ballast water. The BWT solution can even serve as a port-based alternative for those ship owners that may not want to retrofit an onboard treatment system or be deployed in a port with a sudden outbreak of marine pests.

The first production version of Damen’s InvaSave ballast water treatment system – intended for use at Groningen Seaports – will be on display at the upcoming ‘DelfSail’ sailing festival between June 30 and July 3 in the city of Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Damen’s InvaSave ballast water treatment (BWT) system is intended to operate in ports and mobile operations as a fully containerized “plug and play” unit that provides ship owners with an alternative to retrofitting fixed BWT systems. This will also give port authorities the versatility to improve the services that they can offer ship owners.
