IRClass' Expansion in SE Asia Underway

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) is gearing up to expand its activities in Singapore and throughout South East Asia with plans for opening two more offices in the region over the next two years. IRClass, with a diverse portfolio of services across the marine sector, will be hosting the second meeting of its Singapore Advisory Committee on Friday 18 March. The remit of the committee, which is chaired by Denis Welch, Asia-Pacific director of the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), is to advise on strategic growth opportunities in The Lion Republic and across the region. The committee includes key influential figures from the maritime and offshore sectors in Singapore.

IRClass Sets up Advisory Committee in Singapore

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) held the first meeting of its Advisory Committee in Singapore. The purpose of the committee, which draws members from Singapore’s leading maritime and offshore companies, is to give expert guidance to IRClass in strengthening its relationship with the Lion Republic’s maritime cluster and across South East Asia. “In our relatively short existence to date, we have gone some way beyond the simple provision of classification services,” he said. “Life begins at 40, they say,” he added. The committee discussed the aims and objectives of IRClass in Singapore and South East Asia, and advised IRClass to focus on educating the markets not only on its classification capability but the range of its portfolio of services.

IHC Merwede Signs Agreement with Jaya

IHC Asia Pacific, a subsidiary of IHC Merwede, has signed an agreement with Jaya Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte Ltd, which enables IHC Asia Pacific’s high-specification offshore vessels to be produced by Jaya at its yards in Singapore and Batam, Indonesia. As part of the wide-ranging terms, IHC Merwede will also provide engineering support services to Jaya. The agreement creates the opportunity for future cooperation between the two companies. Jaya, IHC Merwede Sign Agreement

Jaya Holdings Limited (“Jaya”) has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Jaya Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte Ltd has signed an agreement with IHC Merwede Asia Pacific which enables IHC’s high-specification offshore vessels to be produced by Jaya at its yards in Singapore and Batam, Indonesia. As part of the wide-ranging agreement, IHC Merwede will also provide design and engineering support services to Jaya. The agreement creates the opportunity for further collaboration between the companies in future, aligned with Jaya’s strategy of building sophisticated and modern offshore support vessels and IHC Merwede’s plans for further expansion of its integrated shipbuilding and equipment manufacturing operations in the region.

IHC Merwede Opens New Singapore Office

IHC Merwede officially opened its new Singapore office at the PSA Building today. The Singapore base will be the corporate headquarters for IHC Offshore & Marine’s Southeast Asia businesses, as it further expands its footprint in the region. IHC Merwede already has an IHC Parts & Services office in Jurong, which manages its life-cycle support operations. The new venture will focus on promoting IHC Merwede’s offshore and marine vessels and technology solutions. In addition, it aims to secure building capacity to complement its yards in The Netherlands and add to the considerable marine engineering capability already operating under the company’s umbrella.

IHC Merwede Names New CEO for SE Asia

IHC Merwede appointed Denis Welch as its CEO for South East Asia. He will be responsible for helping the company to reinforce its regional identity and expand its Asian-centred operations – which are focussed on its offshore and marine activities. IHC Merwede President Govert Hamers says: “Mr Welch’s appointment will assist the company in strengthening its strategy of internationalisation. We have successfully operated from our regional organisation in Singapore for the past four years and are in the process of opening new offices in the PSA building on Alexandra Road to support our ambitions of growth. Singapore is one of the many countries in which IHC Merwede operates.

Drydocks World Contract for Compact Semi-Sub

Drydocks World has won a contract to build a new state-of-the-art oil well intervention Compact Semi-Submersible (CSS) vessel, representing a third order from integrated energy industries service provider Hallin Marine. The vessel will cost a total of $110m. Designed by STX Canada Marine Inc, the diesel/electric CSS’s primary function is to facilitate repair and maintenance to an existing well, via chemical injection on braided lines, extending perforation tunnels and effectively maximizing and extending the productive life of the well.

Drydocks World Participates in Sea Asia

Drydocks World, the global maritime arm of Dubai World, announced their participation in Sea Asia 2009, scheduled to take place in Singapore from the 21st to the 23rd of April 2009. Sea Asia 2009 will bring together top maritime professionals, which include Shipping CEOs and executives of over 350 international companies from 45 nations, showcasing the industry’s latest technology, products and services. Welch will be a guest speaker for the Shipbuilding and Ship Conversion session at the exhibition on the 22nd of April.

Welch New CEO of Drydocks World

Dry Docks World announced that Denis Welch has been appointed CEO of Drydocks World South East Asia and will be based in their Singapore Office. Following the recent acquisition of two significant ship repair, shipbuilding and rig building companies, based in Singapore and Batam, Mr. Welch will oversee the expansion of Drydocks World operations in the region. The South East Asian group now encompasses the ex-Pan United Maritime ship repair and ship building facilities in Singapore and Indonesia, and also the Ex-Labroy ship building and rig building yards in Batam. Work is also underway on Batam Maritime Centre, a large repair and ship building facility, which will be established on a 175 hectare plot on the island of Batam.

Repair Technology: SPS Overlay: Fix Steel Decks Faster

Despite the quality of protection and commitment to maintenance, a certainty in the marine business is that metal structures eventually corrode and wear. Whether it is 25 months or 25 years, most all marine structures will enter a shipyard for some quantity of steel renewal throughout its life. While the process of removing and replacing steel, particularly decks, is at best a manual and laborious process, Intelligent Engineering (IE) is touting its innovative SPS Overlay structural re-instatement process as a means to help shipowners and ship repairers to save valuable time and money. What is SPS? SPS, invented by IE in association with BASF, is a patented system whereby two metal plates are bonded to a solid elastomer core.

IE Profits from Offshore Focus

As Intelligent Engineering (IE) prepares to carry out another drilling rig repair using its SPS Overlay technology in the reinstatement of the pipe-rack deck on board the Pride South Atlantic, a semi-submersible unit belonging to Pride International, the company's recent focus on the offshore sector is clearly paying dividends. Work on board the Pride South Atlantic, commencing in early July, is the latest in a series of new offshore contracts and will involve the reinstatement of a 490 sq. m. deck area to be carried out at the Maua Jurong facility in Niteroi, close to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
