Finlandia Seaways Engine Fire Linked to Poor Maintenance

Substandard maintenance was found to be a major contributing factor at the root of a 2018 engine room fire aboard the DFDS ro-ro vessel Finlandia Seaways in April 2018, U.K. accident investigators found.The Lithuanian registered vessel was in transit from Zeebrugge, Belgium to Rosyth, U.K., when it suffered a catastrophic main engine failure that caused serious structural damage to the engine and a fire in the engine room. SeaKing Delivers Ferry Upgrades for DFDS

SeaKing completed extensive upgrade work on three shortsea ferries operated by DFDS Seaways of Denmark.The four-week project took place at Damen Dunkerque Shipyard in France involving MS Dunkerque Seaways, MS Dover Seaways and MS Delft Seaways.SeaKing Electrical managing director Dave Gillam said a 10-man team of engineering specialists were sent to complete the job.“Work consisted of electrical upgrades to improve entertainment reception to 80 cabins and fitting of VDSs (Variable Speed Drives) to car deck vent fans,” he said. “A total of 16 VDSs were fitted on decks 3, 5 and 10 on each ship.

Traffic Increase between Gothenburg and Belgium

Belgium is Sweden’s eighth largest export market. The Swedish shipping company SOL is about to expand its departure frequency between the Port of Gothenburg and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. The change will offer greater scope for Swedish import and export companies to ship freight to and from Belgium. Gothenburg-based shipping company Swedish Orient Line, SOL, is about to expand its departure frequency between Gothenburg and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. Damen Provides Refit, Rebranding for DFDS

Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque is assisting DFDS Seaways, northern Europe’s largest shipping and logistics company, in a major refit and rebranding program, with five vessels successfully completed so far. Two more ferries are currently at the Dunkirk-based repair yard, which is the closest facility to the main cross-channel ferry routes. Three of DFDS’ ‘D-Class’ ferries - the Dover Seaways, Dunkerque Seaways and Delft Seaways - were upgraded in just three weeks. These vessels operate on the Dover-Dunkirk route.

Verifavia to Monitor Shipping Firms for EU MRV Requirements

Verifavia, the world’s leading emissions verification company for the transport sector, has been tasked by five shipping companies with performing a pre-verification gap analysis against the European Commission’s (EC) Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) rules. Calais DFDS Ferries to Restart Tuesday; Talks to Reconvene

DFDS Seaways Calais-Dover ferry service, suspended by a workers' blockade of Calais port during the weekend, will resume on Tuesday morning, Transport Minister Alain Vidalies said after talks with the parties involved. Ferry workers, industry executives, the Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel and the French government are due to reconvene later this week for further talks to settle the labour dispute after breaking up without agreement on Monday, Vidalies said in a statement.

Eurostar Breaks Passenger Growth Record, Despite Calais Strike

Channel Tunnel rail operator Eurostar has reported record quarterly passenger numbers despite the disruption caused by strikes in Calais. Around 2.8 million passengers travelled on the high-speed service in the second quarter of this year, an increase of 3 per cent on last year. The record numbers were despite disruption during ferry worker strikes in Calais last month over the sale of the MyFerryLink’s ferries to the rival DFDS Seaways. However, overall sales revenues for the first half of the year fell 2% due to the impact of the terrorist attacks in Paris during the first quarter and the closure of Eurotunnel following a lorry fire.

Alewijnse Success at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque

Electrical system integrator Alewijnse Marine Systems is celebrating the first anniversary of delivering electrical services and maintenance to vessels at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque. Twelve months after it began work there, the results are well above expectations with 19 contracts fulfilled for 10 vessels, representing a strong start, the company reports. The delivery of electrical services and maintenance to vessels at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque started in April 2014 with the MPI Resolution maintenance project, a turbine installation vessel.

MAN Diesel & Turbo reaches IMO Tier III milestone for entire four-stroke engine portfolio. At an awards ceremony held on April 15, 2015 at the PrimeServ Academy in Shanghai, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE was awarded approval in principle for its SCR system for the entire medium-speed engine portfolio fulfilling IMO Tier III regulations by the China Classification Society (CCS). Testing took place on an MAN 8L21/31 auxiliary engine with an integrated SCR system but the certificate applies to the entire medium-speed engine portfolio .

Port of Kiel Posts Positive Results for 2014

The Port of Kiel can post positive results for 2014. Both cargo handling and passenger totals continued to rise. The port turned over 6.43 million tons of cargo, 1.6 % more than in the previous year. Stena Line’s Kiel-Gothenburg route recorded the biggest increase in general cargo handling while Color Line’s Kiel-Oslo service posted the strongest growth in passenger transport. During the year a total of 1.98 million passengers started or ended a ferry or cruise ship journey in Kiel - an increase of 1.9 %. NOx-reduction System Ordered for Deepwater Vessel

MAN Diesel & Turbo won the contract to provide a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for each of six MAN 16V32/44CR engines that will power the Petrofac JDS 6000 deepwater derrick-lay vessel ordered in January 2014 by international oil and gas services provider Petrofac. The SCR systems and engines will be constructed at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg, Germany facility, while the vessel will be constructed by the ZPMC yard in China using a proprietary Petrofac design. Kiel's 2014 Cruise Shipping Season Ends

This year’s cruise shipping season in Kiel closes on the evening of October 18 when the AIDAcara sets sail for the Canary Islands. Dr. Dirk Claus, the Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co KG), said, “We can look back on a season full of highlights and one which has also been marked by the inauguration of our fifth terminal berth for cruise ships.” The new passenger pavilion at the Berth 1 cruise shipping facility in the Ostuferhafen was officially inaugurated at the start of June when the 114,000 GT, 290 m long Costa Pacifica berthed there.

MAN-Powered Cargo Vessel Meets Tier III

Classification society awards SCR system emissions certificate. MAN Diesel & Turbo has been awarded a Tier III - compatibility certificate by the DNV- GL classification society for MAN 8L21/31 four- stroke engine aboard a DFDS Seaways ship with a retrofitted SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. While the engine alone meets IMO Tier II emission criteria, the SCR system for NOx reduction raises the whole system to the standard demanded by IMO Tier III rules. The vessel in question, the ‘Petunia Seaways’ is a cargo ship that sails a regular North Sea route between Gothenburg, and Immingham, respectively Ghent for DFDS Seaways. Its SCR system greatly reduces the level of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the engine’s exhaust gas.

DFDS Fleet Signs with Lloyd’s Register

DFDS currently operates 55 ships, predominantly ro-ro freight ships, ro-pax ships, and passenger ships; with few exceptions these ships will now all be classed by LR. DFDS Seaways operates a network of 30 routes with 50 freight and passenger ships. DFDS Logistics provides freight and logistics services in Europe with trailers, containers and rail. Project load business gains ground in Kiel

The number of heavy cargo and project loads being handled in Kiel using the port’s efficient port cranes or RoRo ramps is on the rise. The latest example has been what is currently the most up-to-date telescopic mobile crane to be built by the firm of Liebherr. It was shipped directly to Klaipeda in Lithuania on April 1st on a ferry ship belonging to DFDS Seaways. The Type LTM 1750-9.1 mobile crane is used in power plants and refineries as well as in bridge building and in the installation of wind power plants.

Port of Kiel Reports 2013 Handling Performance

Port of Kiel maintains handling performance

Rail/ship intermodal handling achieves double-digit growth. The port of Kiel said it successfully maintained a sound handling result in 2013. With a performance of 6.32 million tons the result for the previous year was even slightly surpassed by 12,000 tons resp. 0.2 %. The ferry lines form the backbone of the port’s business, rising up to 5.1 million tons (plus 1.3 %) and thereby making up more than 80 % of the total handling rate. The biggest increase was achieved by Stena Line on its route Kiel-Gothenburg, while DFDS Seaways features the highest transport volume.

DFDS Seaways was named “Europe’s Leading Ferry Operator” at the European leg of the 2013 World Travel Awards in Antalya, Turkey, the seventh consecutive year that the ferry company has been recognised for its outstanding service at the World Travel Awards. The 2013 World Travel Awards are recognised worldwide as the ‘Oscars’ of the travel industry and the premier industry awards programme, with the winners decided by votes from travel industry professionals and consumers. The cruise and passenger ferry firm fought off competition from rival firms Brittany Ferries, Color Line and P&O Ferries.

Alfa Laval Exhaust Cleaning System to Go on Three DFDS Vessels

Alfa Laval will supply its PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems to DFDS Seaways for three roll-on/roll-off cargo vessels to be retrofitted by the Polish shipyard Remontowa. The contract was signed in December 2012 and an initial announcement made in January 2013. Delivery is scheduled for July 2013 with installation and commissioning to follow immediately thereafter. A shipping and logistics company serving northern Europe with routes across the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the English Channel, DFDS first installed Alfa Laval’s PureSOx on the M/V Ficaria Seaways in 2009.

Port of Kiel’s Annual Results Show a Slight Rise

More than 6.3 million tons of cargo and 2.2% more passengers handled. The Port of Kiel ended the year 2012 with a small plus in both cargo and passenger handling. Last year more than 6.3 million tons of cargo (an increase of 0.3%) were turned round for the first time. That was an increase – if only a small one – over handling posted in 2011. In the passenger sector more than 1.9 million travellers either boarded or disembarked from a ferry or cruise ship last year. That was an increase of 2.2% over the previous year.

DFDS Utilizes KRAL Fuel Consumption Measurement

The United Steamship Company DFDS Seaways (Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab) from Denmark, a Northern Europe shipping group, has equipped three of its RO-PAX ships (Dover, Delft and Dunkerque-Seaways) with the fuel consumption measurement from KRAL. RO-PAX ships are combined ferries that transport both passengers and freight. In each ship the consumption of all four main motors, the power generation units and of the two burners are measured. Each fuel consumption measuring system has a BEM 500 electronic indication unit locally.
