It is not business as usual in the world where we do business. Things are changing. Even regulations themselves are changing from less prescriptive in nature to more performance-based. As Chairman, President and CEO of a global classification and technology-centric company that operates in 70 countries with 5,000 employees, I am continually assessing the impact of these changes on the capabilities ABS needs to fulfill its mission and maintain its leadership position in the maritime, offshore and government industries it serves. To know where we are heading, we have to know where we began.
US Military Program Targets Transitioning Technologies
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) issued a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) on May 28, 2014 seeking proposals under the Rapid Innovation Fund (RIF) program to transition innovative technologies that resolve operational challenges or save costs into existing acquisition programs. The RIF Program is a Congressionally-mandated program, currently authorized from FY11 – FY15 and managed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). RIF facilitates innovative technologies that show a clear transition path to fielding the technology into existing defense acquisition programs. There is a two-step selection process. The BAA will list the technology areas of interest for each participating component, instructions for submission of white papers, and source selection criteria.
ABS Drives Game-changing Tech through Research
University Partnership Symposium spotlights research that aims to contribute to sustainable solutions for industry. Classification society ABS has revealed technological advances at its recent University Partnership Symposium in Houston. ABS said the research it is funding through some of the top universities around the world will lead to disruptive technology that will impact the role of classification. Academic leaders from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Michigan, George Washington University and the State University of New York Maritime College presented at the ABS-hosted event, which engaged participants from academia and industry.
Small Boat Counter-offensive Contract for QinetiQ
QinetiQ Maritime contracted by UK'sMinistry of Defence (MOD) to research co-ordinated defence against attacks on Royal Naval ships. The contract is to carry out research into the co-ordinated defence of the Royal Navy fleet against the emerging threat of attacks from small, fast and agile boats that might be used by pirates, terrorists or other hostile forces. The contract has been awarded by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), a trading fund of the MoD which maximises the impact of science and technology for UK defence and security. The research brings together two innovative concepts from QinetiQ with the potential to deliver an integrated solution for the Royal Navy to counter the small boat threat.
ABS CEO Calls for New Talent Approach
ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Speaking at the opening session of the CMA Shipping 2016 Conference, ABS Chairman, President and CEO Christopher J. Technip and CIMV Sign Green Chemistry Cooperation Pact
Technip, a specialist in engineering and construction for the energy industry, signed a cooperation agreement in the green chemistry business with the Compagnie Industrielle de la Matière Végétale (CIMV) to industrialize CIMV’s process. The two companies have been working together for the past five years (Technip has provided CIMV with its technological expertise in the fields of engineering and construction, enabling CIMV to pass from the pilot unit stage to the industrial unit stage). During this period, CIMV’s process has been identified as a disruptive technology in the field of green chemistry. Today, this technology is capable of converting solid biomass into hydrocarbons which can be used as a feedstock by the petrochemical industry.

Modus unveils Saab Sabretooth for cost effective survey, inspection
Modus Seabed Intervention has successfully completed trialling one of the subsea industry’s first commercially available hybrid unmanned underwater vehicles. It will be one of the first autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to feature the capabilities and characteristics of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). In partnership with Saab Dynamics, Modus has developed the Saab Sabretooth to offer greater endurance and speed, and is also developing advanced sensor payload packages and operating methodologies. The vehicle is expected to contribute to more cost-effective survey and inspection projects in the offshore, defence and oceanographic sectors. Following successful trials in Sweden and the UK, Modus is preparing the advanced spread for its first commercial deployment.

With its strong dependence on gas-turbine engines for propulsion, the U.S. Navy is always looking for ways to improve the fuel consumption of these engines. At the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), scientists are studying the complex physics of Rotating Detonation Engines (RDEs) which offer the potential for high dollar savings by way of reduced fuel consumption in gas-turbine engines, explains Dr. Kazhikathra Kailasanath, who heads NRL's Laboratories for Computational Physics and Fluid Dynamics. Many Navy aircraft use gas-turbine engines for propulsion, with the Navy's gas-turbine engines being fundamentally similar to engines used in commercial airplanes.

NRL Researchers Demo Ship-to-Shore Data Link
Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) along with Mercury Continuity (MC) have demonstrated the Tactical Reachback Extended Communications (TREC) system in the port of Miami. GAC Eyes Opportunities in Disrupted Market
Shipping, logistics and marine services company GAC is approaching turbulent global markets with a push for greater innovation and flexibility, according to GAC Group President Bengt Ekstrand. Dubai-headquartered GAC said it has maintained a solid balance sheet despite slumps in key markets such as shipping and oil and gas. During a conference of GAC company managers in Dubai, Ekstrand outlined the group’s approach for the next five years. “Disruptive forces are reshaping our markets almost on a weekly basis but in the process, new opportunities for growth are coming into view,” Ekstrand said.
