US Navy to Commission Submarine Illinois

The U.S. Navy is set to commission its newest fast attack submarine during an October 29 ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn. The third Virginia-class block III submarine and 13th of the Virginia-class fast attack class, the future USS Illinois (SSN 786) has the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include antisubmarine and antiship warfare, mine delivery and minefield mapping.

Historic Steamship Towed to Buffalo for Restoration

A 113-year-old “Boblo Boat” SS Columbia is being towed from Toledo, Ohio to Buffalo, N.Y., where the historic vessel will be docked for the next year for restoration. A towing contract was awarded to The Great Lakes Towing Company from nonprofit organization The SS Columbia Project, whose mission is to restore and enable the SS Columbia to serve as a cultural flagship reconnecting New York City to the waterfront cities and towns along the Hudson Valley where excursion steamboats were long a familiar sight.

TDDCL Seeks Input for New Repair Yard

The Trinidad Dry Dock Company Limited (TDDCL) has invited companies to submit proposals to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment and Geotechnical Investigation for a new ship repair yard development project at Port of Spain. TDDCL has executed a Memorandum of Agreement with Invest Trinidad and Tobago (InvesTT), which is empowered by the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to facilitate the future development and operation of the Port of Spain Dry Docks on the reclaimed 140-acre Sullivan Island.

Webb Institute Welcomes Assistant Professor, Daidola

John C. Daidola has joined Webb Institute as Assistant Professor of Structural Engineering. Dr. Daidola is a structural engineer with over forty-years of experience. His early experience was as Design Engineer at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company and as Chief Naval Architect at Storm-Master Boat Corporation. He was employed for 28 years at M. Rosenblatt & Son, Inc., where he worked as Senior Vice President and Engineering Branch Manager. The Trinidad & Tobago Maritime Sector

The recent 2013-14 National Budget of Trinidad and Tobago firmly highlighted the government’s intention to endorse Shipbuilding and Repair as a means of diversifying our traditional oil and gas economy. Trinidad & Tobago is in the middle of the world’s shipping lanes with an approximate 31,000 voyages per year passing within 25 nautical miles, positioning the location as an attractive choice for vessels traversing these principal routes. KR Shipping Supports Duqm Port, Dry Dock Ops

According to a report from Oman Daily Observer, shipping and maritime services provider Khimji Ramdas (KR) Shipping has set up a joint venture company to support the operations of the ship repair yard currently under commissioning at Duqm. The JV has been awarded a long-term contract to provide tugboat services to the state-owned Oman Dry-dock Company (ODC), which owns and manages the Duqm ship repair facility.   (Source: Oman Daily Observer)

Neilson Appointed Academic Dean at Webb

Webb Institute announced the appointment of Mr. Richard P. Neilson as its next Academic Dean. Neilson will assume responsibility for the academic program on July 1 of this year, succeeding Dr. Roger H. Compton, Dean since 1998. Mr. Neilson, a 1970 graduate of Webb, returns to his alma mater after a long and distinguished career in the marine industry. Immediately after graduation he worked for the United States Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., in the Design Branch of their Naval Engineering Division. From 1974 to 1979 he was with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company and then with Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a naval architect in the Tanker Product Group and as Supervisor of Structural Engineering. USS Los Angeles to be Decommissioned

USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) will arrive at the Port of Los Angeles, Wednesday, Jan. 20, for a final visit that includes a decommissioning ceremony Jan. 23. USS Los Angeles departed Naval Station Pearl Harbor, Jan. 14, and is stopping in Los Angeles en route to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for inactivation. The visit will include participation by the crew in numerous public events ongoing throughout the weekend. The Jan. 23 decommissioning ceremony will feature many former Los Angeles crewmembers, former Los Angeles Commanding Officer Rear Adm. (ret) John Shipway, Commodore of Submarine Squadron One Capt. Stan Robertson, Representative for the U.S. 46th District Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn.

Matson Completes the Sale of Two Ships

Matson Navigation Company, Inc. has completed the sale of two combination Ro/Ro /lift-on, lift-off containerships to Sea Star Line, LLC (Sea Star) in Jacksonville, Fla. The vessels, which have been bareboat chartered to Sea Star since the company was formed in 1998, will continue to be deployed in the Puerto Rico trade. The sale to Sea Star, which is owned jointly by SaltChuk Resources, Inc., Matson and Taino Star Investment, Inc., underscores the investors' long term commitment to the line's Puerto Rico service. Matson is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. of Honolulu (Nasdaq:ALEX). The two ships, the SSs El Yunque and El Morro, were both built by Sun Ship Building and Dry Dock Company and initially placed in the U.S. Atlantic Coast-Puerto Rico trade.

U.S. Shipbuilding: Prospects Abound, but Where’s the Money?

While the U.S. commercial shipbuilding industry outperformed the U.S. economy between 1992 and 2001, this period witnessed the construction of barely a dozen large ocean going vessels for our U.S. domestic trades with an aggregate cost of not much more than $500 million. In contrast, U. S. national transportation needs for the current decade will require the construction of four to five dozen such commercial vessels which, taken together with the building of smaller vessels to meet our other domestic needs, will involve shipbuilding contracts in excess of $6 to $7 billion. The majority of this work is federally mandated by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, or involves the replacement of vessels in our U.S. non-contiguous trades that have reached the end of their useful lives.

Another ship to leave James River Reserve Fleet

Tugboats are scheduled to tow the freighter American Ranger from the James River Reserve Fleet on August 26th, at approximately 10 a.m., to the Esco Marine facility in Brownsville, TX, where it will be dismantled. The departure schedule is subject to weather and safety clearances. The American Ranger is one of the high-priority ships designated for disposal by the Maritime Administration (MARAD). The contract for the American Ranger was announced August 9th, along with the disposal contracts for two other high-priority ships, the Santa Isabel and the Mormacwave. The Santa Cruz, part of a contract awarded in June, left the JRRF on August 5th. "Tomorrow's tow of the American Ranger demonstrates the significant progress we are making on this important issue.

Pact Signed for Drydock Project

Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of finance and national economy and deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council, signed on behalf of the Sultanate's government while Nam San-tae, Daewoo chief executive officer and president, signed on behalf of his company. As per the 10-year agreement, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd, will provide administrative and technical support, transfer of modern technology used for ship repairing and maintenance of the dockyard project in Duqum. During its management of the project, the Korean company will prepare a work plan on marketing the services of the dry dock yard in Duqum to various international shipping companies…

U.S. Shipbuilding 2003: A Congested Attempt to Fund

Meeting national transportation needs during the current decade should involve a surfeit of new contracts for our domestic shipbuilders. The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) mandates double hulls for all vessels engaged in U.S. petroleum carriage. In our non-contiguous trades, renewal programs are needed for the replacement aging container and RoRo fleets. Moving freight containers and trailers on RoRo barges and vessels, and moving people on passenger and passenger-vehicle high speed ferries, provide the obvious solutions to traffic congestion in the population corridors served by at least two of our Interstate highways. Some of these vessel needs are now immediate because of private sector decisions to postpone projects.
