Baleària's New High-speed Dual-fuel RoPax Eleanor Roosevelt Enters Service

Spanish shipping company Baleària has put into service its newest vessel, Eleanor Roosevelt, said to be the world’s first very large catamaran Ro-Pax ferry powered by dual-fuel reciprocating engines.Designed by Incat Crowther, the 123-meter-long aluminum vessel was built by Astilleros Armon at its Gijon shipyard in Spain using modular construction techniques. It is classed by Bureau Veritas.The Incat Crowther 123 Dual-Fuel Ro-Pax is powered by a quartet of Wärtsilä 16V31DF main engines. Each of these engines produces 8800kW and drives a Wartsila LJX 1500 waterjet.

Hybrid Ferry: Balearia's 125 Dual-Fuel RoPax Fast Catamaran

Balearia announced construction of the world’s first fast ferry for passenger and cargo powered by dual-fuel LNG engines. The Incat Crowther 125 design is a new class of ferry, being the first to use dual-fuel reciprocating engines and will also be one of the largest fast catamarans in service when it is delivered in 2020.The new design will be constructed by Spanish builder Astilleros Armon at their Gijon shipyard. The partnership of Astilleros Armon and Incat Crowther have together developed a high level of technical capability and capacity to deliver large aluminium catamarans.

Australia's first LNG-powered Support Vessel by 2017

Woodside today signed a five-year charter contract with Norwegian company Siem Offshore Australia Pty Ltd — an agreement that delivers Australia its first LNG-powered marine support vessel in 2017. Woodside Chief Operations Officer Mike Utsler said the announcement positioned the company as an early adopter of LNG as a marine fuel in the region. “We’re thrilled to be the first company to bring one of these vessels to the southern hemisphere. Australia is on track to become the world’s largest producer of LNG, so it makes perfect sense to build dual-fuel capabilities for our marine fleets here. “Our LNG tankers use their cargo to power their engines, making them cleaner vessels that use less diesel. It’s natural that we progress this capability through to our support vessels,” he said.

First Methanol-powered Tankers Due for Delivery

Starting in April, Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), Westfal-Larsen Management (WL), and Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest) will welcome innovative, clean-burning, fuel-efficient vessels to the sea. These seven 50,000 dead weight tonne vessels are built with the first-of-its kind MAN B&W ME-LGI 2-stroke dual fuel engines that can run on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil, or gas oil. This ship technology will significantly reduce emissions while giving ship owners a viable, efficient and convenient fuel alternative.

MAN Diesel and Turbo to Power Giant Crane Vessel

MAN Diesel & Turbo has signed a contract with Sembcorp Marine in Singapore to supply the dual-fuel propulsion system – including exhaust-gas after-treatment – for a New Semi-submersible Crane Vessel (NSCV) for Heerema Offshore Services. The scope of the contract – signed on 30 October, 2015 – provides for 12 × MAN 8L51/60DF four-stroke engines + 12 × MAN SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems. MAN Diesel & Turbo states that the total power output of the engines is some 96 MW and believes it – with the exception of power barges – to be one of the largest engine installations the world has ever seen aboard a single ship. Certainly, it is the first vessel of this size to feature dualfuel technology and, upon completion, will be the largest vessel of its kind globally.

Gas Reformer in Spotlight at Abu Dhabi Expo

Wärtsilä is participating for the first time in ADIPEC, the currently running Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, for the first time, and is showcasing their Gas Reformer technology amongst other related hi-tech products. Also present at the event is Wärtsilä’s established Valves brand, which has demonstrated its pumps and valves capabilities in past ADIPEC events as part of the Hamworthy brand. The Wärtsilä GasReformer addresses the common challenges of gas, including low methane content and number, fluctuating gas quality and the presence of higher hydrocarbons. By converting higher hydrocarbons in natural or associated gas to increase fuel gas’ Methane Number, the GasReformer improves the Wärtsilä DualFuel engine’s performance and fuel flexibility.

MAN B&W Marks LNG Milestone

Three of the world’s largest LNG-carriers successfully tested their propulsion packages at the end of last month. Each vessel is powered by two 6S70ME-C electronically controlled, two-stroke, lowspeed diesel engines, and this event marks a first for MAN Diesel in the LNG sector. The engines will operate on HFO. The vessels are part of a Qatargas project that comprises an impressive 45 vessels, each fitted with two MAN B&W low-speed prime movers, making for a grand total of 90 electronically controlled two-stroke engines. Of these, 31 QFlex carriers will receive two MAN B&W 6S70ME-C engines, each developing 18,660 kW, while the 14 larger QMax carriers will employ two MAN B&W 7S70ME-C engines, each rated at 21,770 kW at 91 rpm.
