ABS to Supervise Tanker Building Process at Yard

VNA reported that Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company has signed with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS.) The contract means the classification society will supervise the shipyard's building process of three oil tankers. Under the $400,000 contract, ABS, in collaboration with the Vietnam Register Agency will send its supervisors to the shipyard to supervise the quality of all stages to build the oil tankers, which will begin at the end of this month, officials from the Dung Quat shipyard. Tanker Construction Begins in Dung Quat

VNA reported that Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Corporation on October 30 began building a 104,000-tonoil tanker, the largest of its kind built in Vietnam so far. The construction, which uses technology from Poland, will be supervised by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Experts from Japan, the Republic of Korea and Poland will take part in building the oil tanker. The same day, the Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and the Vietnam Shipping Corporation (Vinaship) signed a principle contract on the building of two 54,000-ton freighters. Dung Quat Inks $200m Freighter Deal

The Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and the Oil and Gas Shipping Investment Joint Stock Co on Tuesday signed a contract to construct ten 54,000-DWT freighters in a deal worth about $200 million. The vessels were designed by the Shipbuilding Science and Technology Institute, and are 190m long and 32m wide. Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Corp is expected to complete the first freighter by June 2008, and the remaining nine in four month intervals there after. Last month, Dung Quat Corp began building a 104,000 DWT oil tanker, which will be the largest such vessel ever made in Viet Nam when completed. Christened "Dung Quat 1", the ship will be 245m long and 43m wide, and cost $56 million.

Vietnam Set to Build Tanker

In July 2006, the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) will set about construction of the first oil tanker for Vietnam’s oil and gas industry. The tanker, named Dung Quat No 1 is scheduled for launch in 2007. According to the Dung Quat management board, the Infrastructure Development and Construction Corporation (Licogi) and Contex Construction Company (belonging to Vinashin) are working to acquire the necessary mechanical equipment to build a dry dock 380m long, 90m wide and 15m deep. Such a dry dock is necessary for construction and repair of vessels of up to 300,000 tonnes. The main dock infrastructure will be completed in June, so that Vinashin can begin building the first 100,000 tonne oil tanker this July.

Dung Quat Zone Attracts $5b

The Dung Quat Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Ngai has to date attracted 103 projects with a combined capital of over $5b, according to the Investment and Trade Promotion Centre of the zone’s management board. In 2006 alone, twenty projects were licensed in the zone, capitalized at over $1.1b, $832,of which came from foreign-invested projects. Among major new projects were a $1b steel mill by Taiwan’s Tycoons Group, a $260m heavy industrial complex by the Doosan Group of South Korea, and PetroVietnam’s $2.5b Dung Quat oil refinery. Vietnam President Urges Vinashin to Increase Production

Vietnam President Nguyen Minh Triet said that he expected the Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) to increase its international profile by producing more ships for the world market. Triet made these comments at a meeting with company officials and the management board of the Dung Quat Shipbuilding Company in central Quang Ngai Province. Triet also visited the Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant and held meetings with the management board. Deputy General Director of the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation Truong Van Tien briefed the President on the progress of construction over the past year, and affirmed that the management board was working closely with the project contractor to resolve issues, particularly in speeding up construction. Vietnam to Build First Tanker

The tanker, named Dung Quat No 1 is scheduled for launch in 2007, the VietNamNet Bridge reported. The Infrastructure Development and Construction Corporation (Licogi) and Contex Construction Company (belonging to Vinashin) are working to acquire the necessary mechanical equipment to build a dry dock 380 x 90 x 15m. Such a dry dock is necessary for construction and repair of vessels of up to 300,000 tonnes. The main dock infrastructure will be completed in June, so that Vinashin can begin building the first 100,000 tonne oil tanker this July. Vinashin is now seeking supply of 4,000 tonnes of steel and iron. The corporation is also hiring 100 qualified engineers from local enterprises and 20 foreign experts from the Republic of Korea and Poland to advise on the project.

Vinashin to Build Three Tankers

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam) on July 4 awarded a contract to the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), for the construction of three 105,000-ton oil tankers. The oil tankers, to be built at the Dung Quat Shipyard, are to be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities satisfying latest international maritime conventions. According to Vinashin, oil tankers of this kind are normally priced and sold for $60-65m each in the world market. Dung Quat Shipbuilding Wins $200m Contract

Dung Quat Shipbuilding Co. signed a US$200-million contract to build ten 54,000-ton cargo ships for Vinashin Oil and Gas Investment and Transport Joint-stock Co. The 190-m long and 32.26-m wide ships, estimated to cost some $20 million each, will be designed by the Vinashin Shipbuilding Scientific and Technological Institute and registered by DNV, a registering agency of Norway. According to the contract, the first cargo ship will be handed over in June 2008 while the remainders will be transferred with an interval of four months. Troubled Shipbuilder has Another New Chief

According to a report from VietNamNet Bridge, there has been yet another change at the top at the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, with Truong Van Tuyen taking over as general director from acting chief Nguyen Quoc Anh. Tuyen, is a former general director of the state-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) and the current head of the Dung Quat oil refinery. Anh had taken over from Tran Quang Vu August 30 after the latter was suspended and then arrested on charges of mismanaging state assets while serving as the head of a Vinashin subsidiary in the early 2000s. Shipbuilder to Invest $40m in Central Facilities

Vinashin will invest $40m into building ten facilities to support the Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industrial Plant in central Vietnam. Construction of the factories is scheduled to begin this quarter in the Dung Quat Economic Zone of Quang Ngai Province. Under the plan, the new facilities will focus on manufacturing engines, pumping equipment, boilers and lifting equipment. Each plant will cost between $3.7m and $4.3m Vinashin has also recently opened a new subsidiary, Vinashin Offshore Industries in Hanoi. The new entity will focus on manufacturing floating storage and off-loading (FSO) units, moorings, oil drilling vessels and other industrial equipment.

Vietnam Shipyard Builds Tanker for PetroVietnam

An affiliate of Vietnam shipbuilding giant Vinashin started work on the first of three 105,000 oil tankers under a contract last July with the state-run oil giant PetroVietnam. The $56m freighter to be 245m-long, 43m-wide and 20m-height will be built by Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Company and have state-of-the-art equipment satisfying latest international maritime conventions. Vietnam Shipbuilding Growing

The Vietnam Shipping Corp. (VINASHIN) grew 46.5 percent last year, reporting a turnover of $ 692 million. This year, VINASHIN has lined up several large projects including construction of and upgrades to 14 shipyards, the most prominent of which are Song Hong, Ha Long, Nhat Le, and Nghi Son in the north and Dung Quat, Cam Ranh, and Da Nang in the central region. The state-owned giant plans promotions, training programs, and market expansion in Egypt, Japan, and several European countries besides forming a partnership with Japan’s Universal Corp. to manufacture ship parts. Lyngsø Marine Awarded Contract

Lyngsø Marine of Hørsholm, Denmark, a subsidiary of SAM Electronics, has been awarded a contract for supply of integrated automation packages for installation aboard a series of 14 54,000 dwt bulk carriers under construction at Hanoi-based Vinashin Group’s Dung Quat and Ha Long yards for delivery to its own shipping line between 2008 and 2010. Each vessel package comprises complementary MCS 2200 integrated monitoring and control and PCS 2200 propulsion control systems together with newly-developed EGS 2200 electronic governors for main engine control. The systems, which will be mounted in purpose-designed engine room consoles, all feature open architecture as well as standardized hardware and software modules.

Vinashin Posts Revenues

According to reports, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) reported an output value of over $567m and revenues of over $351m in the first nine months of 2006. The figures represented year-on-year increases of 40.7 percent and 73.3 percent respectively. In the period, Vinashin signed nearly $5b in contracts to build ships for partners from Japan, Germany, England, Poland and Israel. The corporation is under negotiations with Japanese and German partners, such as Kanematsu, Sojist and Mitsubishi, to build cargo vessels with capacities ranging from 8,700 tonnes to 56,300 tonnes and 900-1,100 TEU container ships. It is also cooperating with the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (Petro Viet Nam) to build three 100,000 tonne oil tankers.

Vietnam Port Bars Cargoship Departure After Oil Spill

Maritime authorities in Quang Ngai ban a Panamanian-flagged ship from leaving after it spilled nearly 1,000 liters of oil at a local port. The Panama-flagged Chinese-owned Race Express belonging to Nova Shipping & Logistics Pte Ltd can only leave Dung Quat Port after its owners have cleaned up the spill, reports Thanh Nien News. The 43,000 DWT ship had anchored at the port to load wood chips for transport to China. Reportedly the crew of Racer Express was pumping fuel oil to ballast the vessel as it prepared to leave port. Provincial agencies have started estimating the spill's impact on the environment and carry out further cleaning after a local response team mopped up the oil. Estimates were that the spill measured 300-350 square meters.  

Gazprom, Vietnam Boost Cooperation in Energy Sector

The Gazprom headquarters hosted a working meeting between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Company's Management Committee and Fam Suan Shon, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Russia. The meeting addressed the issues of the Russian-Vietnamese cooperation in the energy sector. In particular, the parties praised the results of the joint exploration and production activities on the Vietnamese shelf and in Russia as well as expressed their satisfaction with the progress of a Vietnamese project for natural gas use as a vehicle fuel.

Cargotec Secures Vietnamese Pipelayer with Mooring Solutions

A contract for mooring equipment for a pipelaying barge marks Cargotec’s successful entry to the Vietnamese offshore market. In July this year, Cargotec won a contract from the joint stock company Vinh Nam (VAM JSC)/TECMACH  to supply mooring equipment outfits for Vietsovpetro’s 110m-long by 30.5m-breadth pipelaying crane barge, Con Son. The 1969-built vessel is currently undergoing a conversion at Dung Quat Shipbuilding Industry Co Ltd. “The signing of this maiden contract in Vietnam demonstrates our client’s confidence in our capability,” says Gavin Lim, Cargotec's director of sales for towing and mooring solutions. Asia Fuel Oil: 380-cst cash premium rises 76 percent

The cash premium of the benchmark 380-cst fuel oil grade firmed for the fourth straight session on Wednesday, underpinned by lower supply in the region in early April. The 380-cst cash premium rose 76 percent or close to $1 a tonne to a two-week high of $2.22 a tonne, Reuters data showed. this period has provided some support for the 380-cst market. Around 4.17 million tonnes of fuel oil will arrive in April from the West, of which only an estimated 950,000 tonnes or just 20 percent of the total, will make a landfall in the first 10 days of the month, Reuters reported earlier. Vietnam Shipping Firm Corruption Trial Opens

The Hanoi People's Court in Vietnam's has opened a three-day hearing of the corruption charge against former chairman of Vietnam's National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) Duong Chi Dung and 9 others, reports Xinhua. According to the indictment, Duong Chi Dung and the nine other employees have been charged with deliberately violating state regulations on economic management and causing serious consequences through the embezzlement of state property. Specifically, Dung and the other defendants violated regulations by purchasing a used floating dock from abroad, which did not meet licensing or registration requirements, at higher price than real value in 2007-2008, causing a loss of almost 367-billion Vietnamese dong (US$17.4-million).
