Guinea Bauxite Sockpile Nears 2 Million Tons as Export Suspension Continues

Emirates Global Aluminium's (EGA) subsidiary in Guinea has accumulated a stockpile of nearly two million metric tonnes of bauxite since the suspension of its operations last year, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday.EGA, equally owned by Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, and Dubai sovereign wealth fund the Investment Corporation of Dubai, operates one of the largest bauxite mines in Guinea through its Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC) subsidiary.The standoff with Guinea's government highlights the aggressive push by the military authorities to increase benefit

EGA Signs Pact with Maersk

Emirates Global Aluminium has signed a volume commitment extension agreement for 2019 with the global shipping company A.P. Moller - Maersk for transport EGA's aluminium to customers around the world.EGA exports its metal to customers in more than 60 countries worldwide and makes more than 11,000 shipments each year using over 100,000 containers. EGA’s aluminium is the biggest made-in-the-UAE export after oil and gas, said a press release from thealuminium conglomerate  owned equally by Mubadala Development Company of Abu Dhabi and Investment Corporation of Dubai.EGA works with 20 different shipping lines to ship its products, transporting metal to over 70 global ports.

Damen to Supply Two Tugs to Safeen

Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Abu Dhabi Ports and its subsidiary Abu Dhabi Marine Services (Safeen) for the supply of two new Damen ASD Tugs 2411.The contract was signed by Captain Adil Ahmed Banihammad, the Acting Chief Marine Services Officer at Safeen, and Pascal Slingerland, Regional Sales Director for Damen Shipyards Group. Delivery of both vessels is due within three months.Abu Dhabi Ports owns and operates 11 ports and managing over 55,000 vessel calls each year. The ASD Tugs 2411 will bring additional vessel handling capabilities to the group. Abu Dhabi Ports, EGA Open Freight Station at Khalifa Port

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the largest industrial company in the United Arab Emirates outside oil and gas, and Abu Dhabi Ports have opened a facility which will reduce trucking of EGA’s aluminium within Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) by over 290,000 kilometres per year, reducing costs and environmental emissions. The new container freight station will be used to load metal into containers for transfer onto ships for export. It has been purpose built by Abu Dhabi Ports close to EGA’s Al Taweelah site to reduce the trucking distance for each consignment by approximately 17 kilometres. Last year EGA shipped some 600,000 tonnes of aluminium from Khalifa Port, requiring over 17,000 truck movements from EGA’s site to the quayside.

Khalifa Port to Handle World's Largest Ships

Emirates Global Aluminium, the largest industrial company outside oil and gas, has signed a long-term port facility agreement with Abu Dhabi Ports to use some of the world’s largest bulk cargo vessels to import raw materials through Khalifa Port. With this agreement, Abu Dhabi Ports will be able to develop the port to become the first in the Gulf capable of directly handling these massive ships. Abu Dhabi Ports will fund and complete dredging and widening works to the Khalifa Port approach channel and basin including EGA’s berth. The dredging will deepen the channel to 18.5 metres and basin to 18.0 metres basis zero tide. EGA plans to use large dry bulk ships to import raw materials without the need to transfer all or some of the cargo to smaller vessels outside the port…

UN Defends Arms Shipment in Kenya, Calls Drug Claim Disturbing

Weapons discovered by Kenyan authorities aboard a Norwegian ship were part of a legitimate cargo for United Nations peacekeepers and the vessel should not have been inspected without a U.N. presence, a U.N. spokesman said on Thursday. Kenyan authorities said they uncovered weapons and a drug-like substance stashed inside a shipment of U.N. vehicles when they boarded the Norwegian-flagged Hoegh Transporter at the port of Mombasa last week. "It is unfortunate that the Kenyan authorities inspected the cargo without a U.N. presence, which runs contrary to established protocol and provisions surrounding privileges and immunities," the U.N. said in a statement signed by its spokesman in Nairobi, Nasser Ega-Musa.

Comfort is considered to be a crucial factor on board passenger ships as it largely determines passenger satisfaction, on board expenditure and passenger return levels. However, comfort is subjective as people are very different. Where one passenger complains about discomfort, the other may hardly notice anything. Passenger comfort is determined by a large variety of factors including the interior design of public spaces, temperature and smell. However, within the context of MARIN’s services, we will limit ourselves to the hydrodynamic aspects that might influence comfort.

Habtoor Leighton Awarded Doha Pipeline Project

for KAHRAMAA â€“ Qatar’s General Electricity and Water Corporation. HLG, operating as Leighton Contracting (Qatar) WLL, is responsible for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of 120km of 1600mm diameter ductile iron pipes and fittings. Works also include trench excavation, backfilling and construction of all valve chambers. This contract brings the total value of new project awards to HLG during 2014 to AED7.4 billion (US$2 billion) â€“ close to doubling HLG’s December 2013 work in hand to AED16.5 billion (US$4.48 billion). The pipelines project is the fifth project awarded to HLG by KAHRAMAA. KAHRAMAA was for the construction of the Duhail and Umm Qarn Reservoirs in 2009.

Evergreen Restructures and Consolidates

On Dec. 30, 2008, Evergreen Shipping Agency (America), agents for Evergreen Marine Corporation, announced that the company will consolidate some North America offices and reduce staff in order to deal with the downturn in ocean shipping business due to the worldwide financial crisis. Evergreen Line had previously announced capacity reductions on several trade lanes. "The worldwide economic turmoil has created a situation we have not seen in our lifetimes," the company said in the statement to all North America employees. The measures being taken will reduce costs and put EGA on a more sustainable structure moving forward. Offices impacted will include Baltimore, Charleston, Chicago, Norfolk and Toronto. The Salt Lake City office will close and the work will be assigned to Dallas.

Evergreen Group Announces Management Changes

Taiwan-based Evergreen Group announced management changes. Capt. S.Y. Kuo has been promoted to Second Vice Group Chairman of the entire Evergreen Group based in Taipei. Most recently, Captain Kuo has been Vice Group Chairman overseeing all Evergreen Group business in the Americas. He will relocate to Group headquarters in Taipei. Marcel Chang has been promoted to Vice Group Chairman of Evergreen Group from Chairman of Evergreen Shipping Agency (America) Corp. (EGA), succeeding Captain Kuo. He will be responsible for supervising all Evergreen Group affiliate business in the Americas. Thomas Chen has been named Chairman of Evergreen Shipping Agency (America)Corp. (EGA) from President, succeeding Marcel Chang.

ILA and Evergreen End Disputes with MOA

The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO (ILA) and Evergreen America Corporation (EGA) ended a month long dispute with a memorandum of agreement signed this morning. The agreement contains essential terms demanded by the union on behalf of the Port Captains and Engineer whom it represents, pursuant to an NLRB certification. The striking Port Captains will promptly be returned to their jobs and to the work that they regularly performed will not be reduced, a charge that the ILA alleges had occurred. As a result of entering into this Memorandum of Agreement, the International is discontinuing its picketing of the employer's operation.
