Wärtsilä to Provide BWMS for Eletson's Tankers

The technology group Wärtsilä’s dual technology option for Ballast Water Management Systems (BWMS) will enable Greece based operator Eletson Corporation to have its entire fleet retrofitted from a single provider. A total of 23 product oil, chemical, and LPG carriers of the company’s fleet will be retrofitted with up to 69 Wärtsilä BWMS units, comprising of both their Aquarius UV (ultra-violet) and Aquarius EC (electro-chlorination) systems. New York Shipping Conference Adds Speakers

Examining areas of change and growth in shipping is the focus of the 20th annual Hellenic-American and Norwegian-American Chambers of Commerce conference, often called the New York Shipping Conference. Entitled “Today’s Vision- Tomorrow’s Reality”, the conference will present a Macro Shipping and Economic Overview, a look at Shipping 2020, the challenges of balancing safety, regulatory compliance and costs, the current outlook and sources of dry bulk demand and supply, sourcing ship finance, and the commercial impacts of decisions regarding trade routes, chartering and futures.

Eletson Corp Delivers its First LPG Carrier

The Eletson Corporation enters a new market sector with the delivery today of their first ever liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. Built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD) in Korea, the ship marks a milestone for the well known and respected Greek operator, long recognized by the shipping industry for the ownership and management of tankers for more than four decades. The 22,010 deadweight tonne Anafi, constructed to Lloyd’s Register class, is the first of a series of four LPG ships being built for Eletson by HMD. Built to meet high specifications and exceeding latest requirements for navigational safety and environmental requirements, these ships demonstrate Eletson’s commitment to the demanding gas transportation market.

Eletson chooses Seagull Training Solution

Eletson Corporation has selected Seagull to provide Computer Based Training for their vessels. Eletson will implement an extensive Computer Based Training (CBT) library fleetwide. With this key implementation and those of existing Greek clients, Seagull Computer Based Training (CBT) is set to become standard within the Greek shipping community. Stating his support for Seagull's training solutions, Eletson Corporation Training Manager and Company Security Officer, Mike McCabe said, "after thorough evaluation, Seagull's onboard training system was found to meet Eletson's high quality requirements and enforces our blended learning training program. Lubricant Technology Proven Tough Under Fire

When Texaco, now represented in the marine lubricants market by FAMM (Fuel and Marine Marketing), launched Taro 40 XL 40, the lubricant was designed to address pressing field problems in medium speed engines. Three years later FAMM is in a position to evaluate the performance in a large number of engines and to compare the field results with competitive lubricants. The pressing problems arose from a series of engine design and fuel processing changes. Although aimed at improving engine efficiency and making savings, the changes resulted in a series of difficulties. The best known are engine blackening, undercrown deposits, piston head corrosion, fouling of purifier heaters, increased oil consumption, base number depletion, oil scraper ring clogging and increased piston deposits.

New Leadership for INTERTANKO’s Hellenic Forum

INTERTANKO’s Hellenic Forum last week elected its new Chairman and governing team. Emmanuel Vordonis of Thenamaris Ships Management will be the next Chairman, succeeding Ceres Hellenic’s Nicholas G. Fistes who held the position for three years, and is the Hellenic Forum’s third Chairman. Nick Fistes will remain as a Vice Chairman alongside Costis Kertsikoff of Eletson Corporation and Spyros Polemis of Seacrest Shipping. They will work together with the Steering Committee and the members of the Forum to stimulate constructive thinking and generate new ideas out of the hands-on international experience of the Greek shipping community.

Marcas Extends Membership in Norway and Greece

Marcas announced that IUM AS of Grimstad, Norway and Eletson Corporation of Piraeus, Greece, will join Marcas as of January 1 bringing the total of committed vessels up to 400 vessels on some of the larger contracts, with total Marcas aggregated purchasing expected to exceed $100 million in 2003. Captain Kertsikoff, Venerable Member of Shipping Industry, Passes

Captain Erric B. Kertsikoff, Vice-Chairman of Intertanko since 1997 and a member of the Executive Committee since 1994, passed suddenly on February 6. Kertsikoff was also Chairman of the Hellenic Forum and an active member of the Association for more than 25 years. Kertsikoff served the Greek and International Shipping Industry for more than 50 years, with dedication and love. According to Intertanko, his personal commitment and contribution was truly outstanding; his enthusiasm and guidance was inspirational, and the leadership and statesmanship he brought had profound importance in shaping the stature and success that the Association enjoys today. OceanConnect, Clarksons Join Forces

Online marine fuel supplier OceanConnect on Wednesday signed a strategic alliance with ship broking group Horace Clarkson Plc. Clarksons, the world's biggest shipbroking group will also become an equity partner in OceanConnect. In the last month OceanConnect has announced partnerships with shipping companies Eletson Corporation, Keystone Shipping Co and Stena Bulk AB plus Japan's Nippon Mitsubishi Oil Company and energy information provider Petroleum Argus. Scheduled to begin operations in late spring, OceanConnect said it aims to provide a fast and price-efficient marketplace for marine fuel transactions plus real-time information on pricing and product availability.
