Feature: Losing Contact ... Not an Option

Maritime communications is an estimated $1 billion industry, encompassing ship operators, merchant fleets, governments and private yacht owners. There is arguably no more quickly evolving technical sector in the maritime market than the satellite communications niche. Safety, operational efficiency and quality of life onboard vessels of all type and size today more than ever depends on clear, reliable and cost effective satellite communication services and products. EMS Sets Sail with Spirit of Canada

EMS Satcom, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc., announced its sponsorship of Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges and skipper Derek Hatfield as he sets his sights to win the 2006 5-Oceans global sailboat race. EMS will provide critical hardware and services through its integrated satellite communications systems to connect Derek and his 60-ft. Spirit of Canada to the rest of the world for safety, educational and media relations purposes. “Spirit of Canada is building to win in 2006, and the addition of EMS’s world-class Satcom technology provides us with tremendous advantages in terms of safety and educational outreach,” says Derek Hatfield, managing director, Spirit of Canada Ocean Challenges.

Transport Canada Selects EMS Satcom

EMS Satcom, a division of EMSTechnologies, Inc. reported that Transport Canada has selected the EMS SATCOM eNfusion Broadband high-speed data system to enhance marine pollution surveillance and detection on Transport Canada's National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) Dash 8 aircraft. Flight Acceptance Tests were completed in early November 2006. EMS SATCOM's eNfusion system was installed and integrated with the Swedish Space Corporation's (SSC) Maritime Surveillance System (MSS 6000) to allow for real-time transmission and replay of data. The advantage is that evidence captured during the pollution patrol can be directly transmitted from the aircraft to command centers or marine safety inspectors in real-time…

EMS Enters the SatCom Fray

Advances in communication services for ships and boats is expanding rapidly, keeping pace with development cycles of landside installations. Last autumn, Inmarsat unveiled Fleet F55 and Fleet F33, the two new members of the Fleet family designed to meet the communication needs of small to medium-sized vessels. Earlier this year, EMS SATCOM, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc., entered the maritime market with it pedigree of land-based communication solution expertise. HM Bark Endeavour: Cook's

In 1768 British-born explorer Lt. James Cook and his crew set sail on the HM Bark Endeavour on one of the most significant maritime voyages ever. After observing the transit of Venus across the sun in the Pacific, they headed south-west to New Zealand, traveling up the east coast of Australia, then on to the Dutch East Indies (Jakarta and Indonesia). EMS SATCOM Fleet 55 Satellite Terminal Gains Type Approval

Following a rigorous program of beta testing and evaluation on a number of vessels from various market segments, EMS SATCOM, a division of EMS Technologies, Inc., has received full Inmarsat type approval for its new Fleet 55 Maritime satellite terminal. The Fleet 55 terminal provides global voice services, as well as 64kbits/s Mobile ISDN (including G-3 fax at 14.4kbps, or full-blown G-4 fax) and Mobile Packet Data. It supports a comprehensive selection of interfaces, including ISDN, X.21, RS449, RS232, and two RJ11 ports, as well as optional STUIIB/III service for reliable secure communications.
