Recently, GEās Marine Solutions has been chosen by SSB, one of the largest rescue and salvage companies in the world, to provide a suite of marine technologies including power and propulsion equipment, dynamic positioning (DP) and automation and control systems to its newest deep-water dive support vessel (DSV).
GE Showcases Innovative and Efficient Solutions for International Workboat Show
New global emissions standards reduce emissions by more than 70 percent. Engine technology had to advance to meet the new standard. Many turned to aftertreatment; adding chemicals and operating cost. GE kept it simple and built it right into the engine. GEās Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system needs no aftertreatment, no messy chemicals, no change to operating processes and no ongoing urea cost. Plus, itās maintained best-in-class fuel economy and produces approximately up to 15 percent more power while maintaining virtually the same footprint. Another case when less is definitely more.
IRClass Backs Indiaās Efforts to Cut Emissions
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), a ship classification society, has issued a ringing endorsement of the COP21 agreement at the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris. Arun Sharma, CMD, IRClass represented the voice of the Indian Shipping fraternity at the recently concluded COP21 Climate Summit in Paris. Speaking at the India Pavilion on the topic, āGHG Emissions from Indian Shipping ā Impact and Mitigating Measuresā, he defended shipping as the most energy efficient mode of transport. Noting that despite shipping carrying 90 percent of world trade, shipping contributes only 2.2 percent of total Green House Gas emissions, Sharma endorsed the ongoing efforts by IMO to keep global warming below 2 degrees centigrade.
ICS Backs Climate Change Deal
Press release - The global shipping industry, represented at the United Nations Conference in Paris by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), fully supports a global deal on climate change. The shipping industry is committed to ambitious CO2 emissions reduction across the entire world merchant fleet. This will best be guaranteed if further regulation continues to be led by the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO). Shipping Industry Supports Global Climate Change Deal
The global shipping industry, represented at the United Nations Conference in Paris by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), fully supports a global deal on climate change. The shipping industry is committed to ambitious CO2 emissions reduction across the entire world merchant fleet. This will best be guaranteed if further regulation continues to be led by the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO). Shipping is the lifeblood of the global economy without which intercontinental trade, the bulk transport of raw materials and the import/export of food and manufactured goods would not be possible. About 90% of world trade is carried by sea and shipping is already by far the most energy efficient mode of commercial transport.
GE to Equip PSVs under Construction for Petrobras
GEās Power Conversion business will provide dynamic positioning (DP) and vessel control systems to equip the next generation platform supply vessels (PSV4500), currently under construction at the Detroit shipyard to the Brazilian shipbuilder Starnav Serviços Marítimos Ltda. These vessels, the first of which will be commissioned and will be put into operation by Starnav in 2015 on behalf of Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, will target fuel efficiencies as one of their primary aims. GEās control system incorporates an Energy Efficient mode, part of GEās ecomagination portfolio.
For Ferries, Commercial Light at End of Regulatory Tunnel
A review of the ferry industryās latest challenges and opportunities attracted a record 340 delegates to Vancouver last week for the 39th annual Interferry conference. The global trade association event exposed a string of concerns ā notably over punitive safety and environmental regulations ā but also highlighted the financial potential of new routes, onboard shopping incentives and the use of LNG fuel. GE Dynamic Positioning in the Running for IET Award
New software from GEās Power Conversion business that enables its Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems to save significant amounts of fuel and put less wear and tear on vessel propulsion equipment is on the shortlist to win an Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Innovation Award this year. A DP system holds a vessel in position without the aid of anchors, using only propellers, rudders and thrusters. āEnergy Efficient Dynamic Positioning For Shipsā was developed from a comparison of concepts through to final production code using model-based design. The new mode was entered in the Model-Based Engineering category for the IET Innovation Awards, which attracted more than 400 entries. The awards will be announced in London on November 20.
