1815 - Commodore Stephen Decatur sails with his flagship USS Guerriere and a squadron of nine ships for the Mediterranean to suppress piracy. Under strict negotiations, Decatur is able to secure a treaty with the Day of Algiers, His Highness Omar Bashaw, on July 3. 1844 - The frigate Constitution, commanded by John Percival, sails from New York to depart on her 32,279 mile round-the-world cruise. Heading eastward, she visits places such as Brazil, Zanzibar, Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Hawaii before returning back to Boston, Mass., in Sept. 1846.

Today in U.S. 1822 - Congress authorizes the 14-ship West Indies Squadron to suppress piracy in the Caribbean. 1941 - Admiral Ernest J. King designated Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet in charge of all operating naval fleets and coastal frontier forces, reporting directly to the President. 1964 - USS Richard E. Kraus (DD-849) completes a successful emergency mission in aiding the disabled American Merchant Ship, SS Oceanic Spray in the Red Sea. 1974 - Clearance of Suez Canal for mines and unexploded ordnance completed by Joint Task Force. 1989 - Operation Just Cause begins in Panama.

1822 - Congress authorizes the 14-ship West Indies Squadron to suppress piracy in the Caribbean. 1941 - Adm. Ernest J. King is designated commander-in-chief in charge of all operating Naval fleets and coastal frontier forces, reporting directly to the president. 1964 - USS Richard E. Kraus (DD 849) completes a successful emergency mission, aiding the disabled American merchant ship SS Oceanic Spray in the Red Sea.  1974 - Clearance of the Suez Canal for mines and unexploded ordnance completed by joint task force.  1989 - Operation Just Cause begins in Panama. 1998 - Operation Desert Fox in Iraq ends.   For more information about Naval history, visit the Naval Historical Center Web site at www.history.navy.mil

This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History - May 4

1882-The Secretary of the Treasury was authorized to discontinue any lifesaving station, transfer apparatus, appoint keepers, etc. 1910-Congress required every passenger ship or other ship carrying 50 persons or more, leaving any port of United States, to be equipped with a radio (powerful enough to transmit to a 100-mile radius) and a qualified operator. 1942- The Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Ernest J. King, ordered the Coast Guard Auxiliary to organize into a anti-submarine patrol force, which becomes known as the "Corsair Fleet" for service along the east coast. The Corsair Fleet was made up primarily of private yachts, crewed by their owners, and converted for ASW use.
