Maersk Completes Hamburg Süd Acquisition

The transaction between Oetker Group and Maersk Line for Maersk Line's acquisition of Hamburg Süd, the German container line, was closed on 30 November 2017. On 1 December 2016, Maersk Line announced its intention to acquire Hamburg Süd. The acquisition triggered a regulatory approval process in 23 jurisdictions which was successfully concluded on Tuesday 28 November with the approval of the acquisition by the Korea Fair Trade Commission. "With the final approval of the acquisition we have reached an important milestone in our strategy to become an integrated transport and logistics company delivering sustainable growth. These are truly exciting times and we are looking forward to taking the first steps forward as one company," says Søren Skou, CEO of A.P.

Hamburg Süd Ugrades for Pharmaceutical Reefer Market

The transportation of pharmaceutical products in reefer equipment is subject to the particularly strict guidelines of the Good Distribution Practice (GDP) scheme. Hamburg Süd will be meeting the requirements with regard to calibration processes as of July and therefore be able to respond flexibly to corresponding customer wishes. The guidelines for GDP are specified by the World Health Organization as well as the European Commission. They stipulate that the temperature-regulating sensors of the reefer machinery not only monitor each other automatically, but also that calibration has to take place, and be documented, at regular intervals.

Hamburg Süd on top in Performance Report

Hamburg Süd takes first place in the SeaIntel Global Liner Performance Report for the month of February 2017 in the category Schedule Reliability for the third time in succession. The company had already reached this top spot in December 2016 as well as January 2017. On the average for 2016, Hamburg Süd achieved second place among 20 container lines rated. “Hamburg Süd takes schedule reliability very serious. Our customers can rely on punctual delivery of their cargo. Within the value chain, this avoids, for instance, additional costs for expensive warehousing or production delays,” says Frank Smet, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd. Punctuality plays an important role, particularly in the transportation of perishable goods.

Maersk, Hamburg Süd Enter Slot Purchase Deal

Container shippers Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd announced a slot purchase agreement for Hamburg Süd’s volumes on the East–West trades to be shipped on vessels in the 2M network. Maersk Line acquired Hamburg Süd in December 2016, and the two are party to a number of such operational agreements worldwide. Due to changes in the global liner alliances, the agreement follows commercial negotiations in anticipation of the termination of Hamburg Süd’s current slot purchase arrangements on the East–West trades.

Hamburg Süd Reports Sustainably

Hamburg Süd is the first container shipping lines to publish its Sustainability Report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Standard Disclosures (Core). Entitled “Setting standards and acting sustainably”, the 84-page report sets out the key topics in the areas of environmental, social and economic responsibility for the 2014 and 2015 reporting period. “With the new Sustainability Report, Hamburg Süd is once again demonstrating that sustainable conduct is an indispensable part of its corporate philosophy. In compliance with the GRI G4 Standard Disclosures, we are presenting on a voluntary and transparent basis where we stand as regards sustainable behavior,” explains Dr. Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd.

DHL Names Hamburg Süd ‘Carrier of the Year’

Logistics enterprise DHL Global Forwarding presented container shipping company Hamburg Süd with the ‘Carrier of the Year 2015’ award, underscoring the working relationship between the two companies   The award was received by Peter Frederiksen, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, at the annual DHL Carrier Meeting on December 9 in Bonn, Germany.

Aliança Christens 2nd Cabotage Boxship

With the christening of the new container ship “Vicente Pinzón”, the Hamburg Süd subsidiary Alianҫa has momentarily completed the expansion and modernisation of its cabotage fleet. In the past two years, Alianҫa has launched a total of six newbuildings for its cabotage services, four of which feature a slot capacity of 3,800 TEU each and two with 4,800 TEU each. All newbuildings have set new standards in the Brazilian coastal routes in terms of their capacity and environmental friendliness. The christening took place on 20 June in front of some 500 guests at the Terminal Marítimo de Passageiros in the Port of Santos. Alianҫa’s Fleet Continues to Grow

The cabotage fleet of Hamburg Süd’s subsidiary Alianҫa has once again gained a new member. Within the scope of a customer event, the new container ship “Bartolomeu Dias” was christened on 14 April 2015 at the TECON Terminal in the southern-Brazilian port of Rio Grande. The ship’s sponsor is Luciana Pereira Quartiero. Her husband, Jacques Maggi Quartiero, is vice president of Camil Alimentos S.A. Hamburg Süd Receives Panalpina Award

Hamburg Süd has been recognized for the first time with the “Carrier of the Year” Award by the internationally operating transport and logistics group, Panalpina, based in Basle/Switzerland. Peter Frederiksen, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, accepted the award at the shipping company’s headquarters in Hamburg in mid-January. The Panalpina Award is the result of the “Panalpina Ocean Freight Carrier Survey 2014”, for which the company asks around 1,700 employees worldwide to evaluate their daily dealings with various shipping lines according to different criteria.

Hamburg Süd Wins “Electrolux Supplier Award 2014”

Hamburg Süd has been honored with the “Electrolux Supplier Award 2014” in the category “Global Logistics”. Presentation of the prize was held at Electrolux AB’s headquarters in Stockholm in mid-November. Dr Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, and Philip Oetker, General Manager Commercial Region Europe, accepted the award on behalf of Hamburg Süd. Hamburg Süd was awarded top marks in quality of service, on-time delivery, performance, cost competitiveness and sustainability practices.

Hamburg Süd Headquarters Being Expanded

On 21 November 2014, Hamburg Süd laid the foundation stone for the extension to the shipping company’s headquarters in Hamburg. The new building is going up at Willy-Brandt-Straße (WBS) 63 and 65 on the plots adjacent to the traditional Hamburg Süd head office (WBS 59 and 61). The laying of the foundation stone was performed by Dr Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg. True to long-standing tradition, a capsule containing coins and banknotes, a daily newspaper and Hamburg Süd time records was set into the foundations. UASC and Hamburg Süd Sign Cooperation Agreement

Two leading container shipping lines United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and Hamburg Süd have signed a global cooperation agreement after a series of discussions focused on the companies’ respective customers’ business needs, key growth areas and operational requirements. Aliança Christens New Containership

Yesterday, Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança christened its containership Pedro Álvares Cabral during a ceremony held for customers at the port of Itapoá. The ship’s Sponsor is Elisabeth von Krüger de Freitas, the wife of Humberto Ramos de Freitas, Executive Officer for Logistics and Mineral Exploration of Vale S.A., one of the most important clients of Aliança Bulk. Dr. Arnt Vespermann, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd and Julian Thomas, General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança, also participated in the ceremonies.

Renovations Sought at Kiel Canal

In the course of a press panel discussion in Hamburg hosted by Port of Hamburg Marketing, port and business representatives from centers along the Kiel Canal and the Hamburg Port Authority jointly called for the reconstruction without delay of the fifth lock chamber and the renovation of the two existing large lock chambers at Brunsbüttel. In the medium term, business in the port and industry regard the straightening out of the Eastern stretch of the canal and its deepening by one meter as indispensable measures.

Alianca Holds Naming Ceremony for New Container Ship

With the Fernão de Magalhães, Aliança has christened the second of four identical new container ships for its cabotage fleet. The Naming Ceremony was held on September 26 at the container port of Porto Chibatão on the Rio Negro in Manaus. The Sponsor of the ship is Dionéia Thomas, the wife of Julian Thomas, who is General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança. Dr. h.c. August Oetker, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Oetker Group and Partner of Dr. August Oetker KG, and Dr. Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, also took part in the ceremony. With the container ship “Fernão de Magalhães” the Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança is continuing to modernize its cabotage service fleet.

Hamburg Süd Christens First Ship in the U.S.

For the first time in the shipping company’s history, Hamburg Süd has celebrated the christening of a ship in the U.S. The ceremony to name the 3,800 TEU container ship Cap Corrientes was held on August 23 in the Port of San Francisco. The ship’s sponsor is Ofelia Gallo, the wife of Joseph E. Gallo, President and CEO of the E.&J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, California. The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Heino Schmidt, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, and Alexander Oetker representing the Oetker family. The container ship was built by Taizhou Catic Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Ltd. in China for the account of Vilmaris Management GmbH of Hamburg/Germany and is on a long-term charter with Hamburg Süd.

Hamburg Süd, Maersk to Discuss Reefer Container Trade

Peter Frederiksen, Member of the Executive Board at Hamburg Süd and Thomas Eskesen, Global Head of Refrigerated Business at Maersk Line will be providing two separate keynote addresses at the fifth Cool Logistics Global, taking place in Rotterdam from September 24-26. Exactly one year after Maersk’s momentous announcement about reefer rate restoration at Cool Logistics Global 2012, Thomas Eskesen will review the results of these measures and provide an outlook about the challenges facing the global reefer sector today. Looking more broadly at the health of container shipping overall, Peter Fredriksen is expected to review the impact of current carrier strategies on shippers of chilled and frozen cargoes.

Hamburg Süd say they do not wish to comment publicly on the subject matter of the points under discussion. It does, however, expressly point out that the owners of Hamburg Süd – unlike the impression conveyed in various press articles – positively favour a flotation of the merged new company if certain conditions are met. The Advisory Board and Executive Board of Hamburg Süd remain firmly of the view that the merger of Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd would be of enormous benefit for both companies as well as for Hamburg as a shipping location.

Germany's Hamburg Süd Group has recently published its first Responsibility Report titled 'Making it our Business'. The report documents not only the ecological but also the social and societal responsibility the company exercises. Hamburg Süd Aims for 26 PCT Cut in CO2e Emissions

Hamburg Süd is pressing ahead vigorously with its commitment to environmental protection. The shipping group thus decided recently to set itself an objectively measurable environmental target: by 2020 Hamburg Süd is aiming to reduce the CO2e emissions of its owned and chartered container vessels per unit of transport capacity (TEUkm) by 26 per cent. Hamburg Süd Makes Changes to the Executive Board

After 18 years on the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, Joachim A Konrad, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, is to retire at the end of April, 2012. The Advisory Board of Hamburg Süd has appointed Peter Frederiksen and Frank Smet to succeed him. They will be joining the Executive Board  May 1, 2012. The scale and importance of the duties performed by Joachim A Konrad in past years prompted the Advisory Board to split the scope of responsibilities in the future.
