Coast Guard Commissions USCGC Frederick Mann

The Coast Guard commissioned its newest and sixth Arctic District Fast Response Cutter (FRC), Coast Guard Cutter Frederick Mann (WPC 1160), for official entry into its service fleet during a ceremony held in Kodiak, Alaska, Friday.The ceremony was presided over by Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the Arctic District. Members of the Mann family were also in attendance, including the cutter’s sponsor, Mrs. Eugenia "Jeannie" Mann Hyder, niece of Frederick Mann. “Commissioning the Frederick Mann increases U.S. strength and ensures control of our maritime borders and approaches,” said Little.

Bollinger Wins Contract for Phase II FRC Builds

Louisiana shipbuilder Bollinger Shipyards announced it has secured a contract to build Phase II of the Sentinel Class Fast Response Cutters (FRC) for the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The FRC, the newest generation of USCG patrol cutters, is a replacement for the Coast Guard Island Class cutters that Bollinger built over three decades ago. Bollinger’s CEO and President Ben Bordelon said, “We are pleased with this award to build 26 FRC Coast Guard cutters. Our relationship with the Coast Guard began over 30 years ago and we are proud to continue building on that legacy.

Remote Monitoring: The Bottom Line for Fleet Optimization

By any yardstick, remote monitoring is fleet optimization in the new millennium. You’re all over it: optimizing your fleet. But, what does that mean? For some operators, it means making sure their mix of vessels meets the needs of their customers and the prevailing winds of the economy. For others, it entails reading the tea leaves just right when it comes to deciding on time charters or dipping one’s toes into the spot markets. Still others focus on the closely linked Holy Grail of reduced bunker consumption and minimal stack emissions. For all of these cool customers, however, “remote monitoring” will also be part of that equation. That said; defining what remote monitoring means is another thing altogether.
