According to official studies, the theoretical worldwide generation potential of tidal energy has been estimated at over 7,800 TWh/year. The name of the new entity is "GL Garrad Hassan Nederland B.V.". The Netherlands has emerged as an evolving market for renewable energies with particular emphasis on offshore wind energy.
Andrew Garrad to Retire from DNV GL
Dr. Andrew Garrad, the co-founder of Garrad Hassan, has announced he will retire from DNV GL on December 23, 2016. Following the merger between DNV and GL Garrad Hassan two years ago, Andrew ceased to play an active operational role in the company, but remained associated with DNV GL, as advisor, as Chairman of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital (which DNV GL sponsored) and as President of the European Wind Energy Association 2013-2014. He co-founded Garrad Hassan in 1984 and became President of GL Garrad Hassan after Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Garrad Hassan merged in 2009.

Offshore Wind Sees New Capital Investments
With the support of technical due diligence advice from GL Garrad Hassan, Sumitomo Corporation and its subsidiary Sumitomo Corporation Europe last week agreed to invest significant amount of equity in two Belgian offshore projects. The Belwind 1 operational wind farm and Northwind project together account for 127 wind turbines and 381 MW of generating capacity with total project cost of about €1,550 million. The investment by Sumitomo is further evidence that offshore wind is attracting new sources of equity capital. Sumitomo agreed to take 39% of Belwind 1 and 33% of Northwind.
Wind Farm Courses in Turkey
Turkey is one of the key emerging wind markets in Europe. As a response to the high demand in wind farm installation, GL Garrad Hassan is adding more training courses offered throughout Turkey in 2010. With the goal to develop professionals' skills within the industry, Wind Farm Design and Introduction to GH WindFarmer courses will be conducted in Istanbul on 28 and 29 September. A course on "Financing Your Wind Farm" will take place on 14 October. Wind Farm Design is a one day course providing a detailed overview of the wind farm design process. It focuses on numerous principles including wind flow, turbulence, wake effects, optimized energy production, and the use of sophisticated software tools.
Taiwan Offshore Wind Farm Research Project
GL Garrad Hassan signs MOU with Taiwanese Industrial Technology Research Institute to develop Taiwan's offshore energy strategy. The offshore wind resource around the Taiwanese coast is considered excellent, with more than 6,000MW potential capacity at water depths of less than 50m. Earlier this year the Taiwanese government announced an extensive plan to speed up the deployment of offshore wind farm and promote green energy economics. Beginning with a demonstration project in 2015, offshore installation is planned to ramp up over the coming years and reach 1000 turbines and 3000MW by 2030.

GL Garrad Hassan and GL Academy are merging their expertise to offer joint training seminars. With GL Garrad Hassan’s skilled trainers working within the GL Academy infrastructure and through GL Academy’s local branch offices, these combined training programs will be offered worldwide. Hamburg - GL Garrad Hassan has appointed a new Business Development Manager in the UK, Ian Finch will be responsible for managing sales and business development activities for the GL Group with a special focus on offshore wind. He will work closely with Christoph Thiel, the newly appointed Head of Business Development and Sales for GL Garrad Hassan and Colin Morgan, who leads the Group's Offshore Wind Practice. GL Garrad Hassan Winner of Two DOE Grants
Hamburg, Germany – GL Garrad Hassan, part of the GL Group, has been awarded grants by the US Department of Energy (DOE) of $500,000 and $200,000 to fund two studies to identify optimal strategies for the installation, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms and to assess the readiness of US ports to meet the needs of the industry. GL Garrad Hassan as Wind Power Forecaster
In order to manage wind generation in its real-time and day-ahead markets, the system operator for the New England area of the U.S., ISO New England Inc., has awarded GL Garrad Hassan a two-year contract to provide wind power forecasting services to all wind in the ISO’s footprint, including generation within the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. GL Garrad Hassan is in the beginning stages of this project for the ISO, with plans to begin first forecast delivery in 2012. Accurate forecasting is the key to the management of any generation source that inherently depends on the variability of the weather, requiring advanced short-term prediction of generation to make it approach the manageability of conventional electricity sources.
Market Report on High Altitude Wind Energy
The world’s demand for safe and clean energy continues to grow, with renewable sources playing an every greater role. Wind power generation, having expanding offshore, is now not only looking out but up. Andrew Garrad Awarded CBE in New Year’s Honours List
Dr Andrew Garrad, who retired from DNV GL on 23 December 2016, has been awarded a CBE – Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List. The CBE rewards contributions to the arts and sciences as well as work with charitable and welfare organisations. In 1984, Andrew co-founded Garrad Hassan (GH) in Bristol. It grew to become the world’s largest renewable energy consultancy, employing 1,000 people in 29 countries. He became President of GL Garrad Hassan after Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Garrad Hassan merged in 2009.

In his presentation at EWEA 2011 in Brussels, Michael Wilkinson, GL Garrad Hassan, gives insights to the results of the Reliawind Project. The presentation will be held on Wednesday, 16.03.2010, from 9:00 - 10:30 at EWEA. One of the reasons for this project was to better understand reliability by measuring the failure rate and downtime of existing machine designs at operational wind farms.
