PVA:Marketing Excursion Boats Post 9/11

Like most of the tourism business, the excursion/dinner boat market took a big "hit" right after 9/11. Markets that were geared for conventions and depended on fly-in business were especially hard hit since airline bookings went into a steep nosedive right after the terrorist attack and customers could not reach the destinations that offered riverboat entertainment. Most directly impacted by the World Trade Center attack was VIP Yacht Charters, a New York City dining yacht company located a few blocks from the WTC. Minutes after the attack the company immediately began a rescue effort shuttling 40,000-50,000 people across the river to New Jersey and opened their commissary to rescue workers feeding hundreds of workers at no charge.

London Gateway Ups Security Measures

Expanded use of converged security and information management platform will support physical and IT security program at DP World London Gateway. London Gateway, one of the U.K.’s major ports owned and operated by DP World, has implemented converged security and information management (CSIM) software port-wide to increase security and provide overall situational awareness capability. Situated on the north bank of the River Thames, the deep-sea container port is located next to Europe’s largest logistics park, providing shipping access to key U.K. consumer markets.

Port of Pittsburgh Seeks New Technology Partners

The Port of Pittsburgh Commission (PPC) is building an innovative wireless broadband network along the rivers in Pittsburgh and is seeking partners to explore new applications for transportation, safety, security and environmental monitoring, according to James R. McCarville, Executive Director of the Port of Pittsburgh Commission. The project, called Wireless Waterways, consists of both the Network System Infrastructure (NSI), which will be scalable and expandable, and an Interoperability Test Bed (ITB). The project has been under construction for nearly a year by the PPC’s contractor, CONXX, Inc., from Johnstown, PA. The PPC will begin to conduct experiments within the Test Bed in June.

Seatruck Reports Growth on Irish Sea

Freight ferry company Seatruck is reporting growth of more than 18pc in 2016 consolidating its position as the fastest growing operator on the Irish Sea, as more hauliers switch to its services. Seatruck chief executive Alistair Eagles said freight levels are also up 30pc in November 2016 compared to November last year. He further forecast winning even more business from hauliers switching ferry operators, following the opening of the new £125 million ($155 mln)  Bay Gateway relief road on October 31.

Clipper has established the Clipper Sapphire Pool, a new commercial pool for modern Supramax grab fitted bulk carriers between 52,000 and 58,000 deadweight. The new pool will commence operation immediately, with 16 vessels initially committed to join in early 2015, of which Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (Genco) has committed 50% of the ships and Clipper the balance. Westports Records Throughput of 9m TEUs

Malaysian port operator Westports Holdings Berhad  recorded FY17 container throughput of 9m TEUs which declined 10% YoY, in-line with our expectation of a poorer throughput outlook for the year. The decline was mainly due to drop in transhipment, while cushioned by strong growth in the gateway. Meanwhile, full compliance of MFRS 15 effective FY18 should be earnings-neutral. No changes made to our FY17-18E earnings forecasts. Maintain MARKET PERFORM and DDM-derived TP of RM3.70. Westports announced an update on its full-year FY17 container throughput, reporting in at 9m TEUs.

APM Terminals Poti to Build Cargo Terminal

APM Terminals Poti and Poti New Terminals Consortium signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a USD 100 million dollar investment in a new bulk cargo terminal that can process 1.5 million tons of dry bulk cargo annually and generate new trade opportunities for customers in the Georgian transit corridor. The new terminal is expected to be built on APM Terminals Poti land and infrastructure and will entail the construction, development and operation of a new breakwater, dry bulk cargo terminal and related infrastructure to serve bulk cargo customers.

Clipper Projects Heads Up New MPP Ship Pool

Denmark-based Clipper Projects sets up multi-purpose (MPP) pool, which will form an integrated part of the current Clipper Projects MPP fleet. The new pool will initially comprise 14 x 15-20,000 dwt MPP vessels, but it is the clear intention of the members to expand the pool with more members and tonnage ranging from 10-20,000 dwt. The pool will be managed by Clipper Projects and will supplement the existing Clipper Projects fleet now numbering 45 modern multi-purpose vessels. “The new pool will enable us to offer unique services to the market in terms of availability and quality. Clipper to Take Delivery of 2 Ultramax Newbuilds

Clipper Group announced it will take delivery of two SDARI64 newbuilding bulk carriers during the coming months from Sainty Shipbuilding in Yangzhou, China. The vessels, to be named Clipper Kalavryta and Clipper Kythira, were purchased as resales and will be technically and commercially managed by Clipper. The SDARI64s are next generation eco bulk carriers and designed to improve overall vessel performance. These particular vessels will in addition be delivered with special cranes with an above the average lifting capacity and grab volume. Both vessels are also equipped with the ballast water treatment system Electro Cleen System to meet new requirements and thus preventing spreading of invasive species between oceans.

Norborg Steps in as Clipper Group CEO

Clipper Group has appointed Peter Norborg new Group CEO, succeeding current chief Frank G. Jensen, who will continue with the company as Chairman of the Board. Norborg will commence work in Clipper on April 1, 2016. Norborg, 49, comes from a position as Chief Operating Officer at Switzerland-based open hatch/dry bulk company Gearbulk, a position he has held since 2012. Before that, he spent 14 years at D/S Norden, latest as Executive Vice President and Head of Dry Cargo division. Peter holds an EMBA from IMD Business School.

Cruise West Announces Adds Ships, Itineraries

Cruise West announced that it has acquired the Yorktown Clipper and the Nantucket Clipper previously part of the Clipper Cruise Line fleet. The 138-guest Yorktown Clipper and 102-guest Nantucket Clipper are U.S.-flagged coastal cruise ships that will join Cruise West's fleet of American-owned vessels. The new ships will sail the 2006 itineraries on the East Coast, Great Lakes, Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico and Central America that were already published by Clipper Cruise Line, but under Cruise West ownership and management. Cruise West is the largest American small-ship cruise line and will now be operating 10 vessels accommodating 70 to 138 guests on itineraries in Alaska, Mexico, Costa Rica, on the Columbia River, in California Wine Country, the South Pacific, and Japan.

FRS Acquires Clipper, Plans North American Expansion

FRS has acquired a majority interest in Clipper. FRS is a global ferry and shipping group, currently operating 60 vessels in 12 countries, and carrier of more than 7 million passengers and 1.9 million vehicles last year on national and international ferry lines. Clipper, operator of Clipper Vacations, is a recognized company in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada, offering unique regional travel experiences, including high speed Victoria Clipper ferry services from Seattle to Victoria, and Seattle to San Juan Island.

Gibdock Performs Quick Freight Ferry Repair

Gibdock has redelivered the Seatruck Ferries container/ro-ro vessel Clipper Point on-time, after a fast turnaround 11-day renewal project for the Clipper Group-owned operator. The ship has subsequently been introduced to Seatrucks’ Irish Sea operations. Returning Gibdock customer Seatruck scheduled the 5,193dwt Clipper Point to arrive in the yard on September 18. The 142m long (23m beam) freight ferry left the yard after the job’s completion on September 30. FirstWave/Newpark Lands Diamond Offshore Job

FirstWave/Newpark Shipbuilding has been awarded a contract by Diamond Offshore Drilling of Houston, Texas for completion of upgrades to the drillship Ocean Clipper, which returned to Galveston for the additional upgrades on August 16. "We're pleased that Diamond brought Ocean Clipper back to our yard for this project," said Francis Fair, FirstWave's executive vice president Galveston Operations. "FirstWave performed work on Clipper earlier this year, and we appreciate Diamond's confidence in us to provide additional services for the vessel."

Swiss-based Kuoni Travel Holding Ltd. finalized its $115-million acquisition of INTRAV, the U.S. luxury tour operator, and its subsidiary, Clipper Cruise Line, which are based in St. Louis. Effective immediately, Ian Coghlan will become CEO of both companies, replacing Paul H. Duynhouwer, who has acquired a majority stake in Clipper's two U.S.-flag ships, Nantucket Clipper and Yorktown Clipper. In addition, Duynhouwer will be the majority owner and CEO of New World Ship Management, LLC, formed to operate all four Clipper ships, including the two U.S.-flag ships, as well as Bahamian-registered Clipper Adventurer and Clipper Odyssey. Coghlan was educated in the U.K. and joined Kuoni in 1985 in the finance department.

Clipper Tankers Selects KVH

Clipper Marine Services A/S of Copenhagen, Denmark, is the latest commercial maritime operation to take advantage of the broadband access and affordable service offered by KVH Industries (Nasdaq: KVHI) and its compact TracPhone V7 satellite communications system and the mini-VSAT Broadband service. In the coming months, 22 of Clipper Tankers’ vessels will be equipped with KVH’s 24-inch (60 cm) TracPhone V7 antenna along with multiple voice service lines and broadband Internet, e-mail, and data access throughout the mini-VSAT Broadband network’s expanding global coverage area. Clipper will continue to benefit from its Inmarsat systems and service, however, thanks to the TracPhone V7’s full compatibility with Dualog software.
