Less than one year after announcing the formalization of their relationship, Cummins and Konrad Marine confirm they have added 480 and 550 horsepower ratings to the diesel sterndrive packages they jointly offer. The 480 rating is approved for both leisure and commercial applications. The package offers 37% more horsepower and 129% more torque than gasoline outboards; and 46% more horsepower and 54% more torque than other diesel sterndrive products sold into the commercial space. The 550 rating is currently intended for leisure applications. An impressive 875 ft. lbs. offers 162% more torque than outboards, and significantly more than any other diesel sterndrive offered in the leisure space.

Geoff Conrad has been with Cummins Inc. Marine for 20 years and, according to the company, in those two decades has been instrumental in enabling Cummins to grow its commercial marine sales at a 20 percent compound annual rate. Cummins add that Geoff has led their efforts to refine and develop its marine product line and has recently worked on the Cummins 95L project. Reflecting on his life-long connection with the marine industry, Geoff Conrad has played a major role in helping to create the industry’s most comprehensive “Total Cost of Ownership” (TCO) model for fleet owners. Geoff brings with him a strong leadership and sales skill set and is well known in the Northwest among naval architects, builders, service centers, and among fleet owners.

Designed Ready to Meet EPA Low-Emissions in 2014. Most Powerful High-Speed Diesel Will Challenge Medium-Speed Engines. Cummins Inc., a manufacturer of diesel engines for the commercial marine industry, will introduce the new QSK95 engine with 4000 hp (2983 kW) output as the most powerful high-speed diesel configured for marine propulsion and auxiliary generator sets. The 95-liter, 16-cylinder engine, revealed today at the Seymour Engine Plant, is designed ready to meet EPA Tier 4 low-emissions regulations taking effect in 2014.

Cummins Inc., on behalf of the Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) affirmed the industry’s support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Final Marine Engine Rule. Geoff Conrad, Cummins General Manager  Marine, made the announcement at a press conference hosted by the EPA. The Final Marine Engine Rule is intended to reduce emissions from diesel-fuelled engines installed in marine vessels and locomotives. Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders are building a highspeed catamaran ferry for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation district. Designed by International Catamaran Designs (INCAT) of Sydney Australia, this will be Nichols Brothers 27th U.S. built highspeed catamaran. The vessel will be 139 ft. overall with a 34-ft. beam and draft of 9 ft. The individual hulls will have a beam of 9 ft.. A 37-knot speed is predicted with four 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines delivering 1,600 hp each at 1800 rpm. Each IMO emission certified engine will drive a Hamilton model 571 water jet through a ZF Marine BU 460D marine gear. Electrical service will be provided by a 125 kW generator set powered by a Cummins Marine 6CT8.3DM engine.

Ketels, the Cummins dealer in Gent, Belgium, completed the first European installation of the new Cummins Tier 2 compliant QSK38 M. The engine, delivering 1200 HP at 1800 RPM, has been installed in the inland waterway barge Lambada. The new engine is evolved from the popular and reliable KTA38 that is so well known in the marine world. Then main engine was installed with a new Twin Disc MGX5321DC with 4.96:1 reduction and Kobelt controls. The recently developed Cummins C Command Elite engine control panel system was also installed. Cummins literally unveiled its QSK60 powerplant to the marine market at the Workboat Show in New Orleans, ushering in a new, more powerful age for the surging diesel engine manufacturer. "This engine will take Cummins into new markets," said Geoff Conrad, general manager, Cummins Marine. The new engine (new for the marine market, that is) has a power range of 2,000 to 2,300 hp (1,492 to 1,716 kW for propulsion and 1,500 to 1,825 kW for auxiliary applications, and is now the most powerful in the Cummins line-up. "The QSK60 provides operators a new choice as well as a cost effective alternative to medium speed," Conrad said. The QSK60 is manufactured at the Daventry Engine Plant in the U.K., the same facility that builds the K38 and K50 engines.
