Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas named its second floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, the PFLNG Dua, in a ceremony in Geoje, South Korea.The floating LNG facility is designed to extract gas from deepwater gas reservoirs in depths up to 1,500 meters.With PFLNG Dua, the national oil and gas company of Malaysia owns and operates two floating LNG facilities, following the success of PFLNG Satu which has been in operation since 2017. This achievement demonstrates Petronas’ strong position in the LNG industry leading the way in innovative solutions to ensure a reliable and secure supply of LNG to meet the growing demand for cleaner energy.

OOCL celebrated the christening of Hull H2173, a 21,413 TEU newbuilding constructed at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island. Named as OOCL Germany, this mega containership is the second of the six 21 thousand TEU class vessels on order at the shipyard and they are an important part to enhancing the competitiveness and efficiency of our modern fleet. As with many of our newbuildings, extra efforts have been made to ensure that they are operationally efficient and meeting the highest environmental standards. In fact, the OOCL Germany, and her sister vessels, are designed with many advanced green features that can help meet future environmental requirements.

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) announced the naming of its latest containership, the OOCL Hong Kong, at a christening ceremony held at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard on Geoje Island on May 12. The OOCL Hong Kong was also celebrated as one of the largest containerships in the world by carrying capacity, and will be a welcome addition to strengthening the OOCL fleet this year. In his ceremonial remarks, C. C. Tung, Chairman of Orient Overseas (International) Limited addressed the importance of this occasion for the company. “This is a very exciting time for all of us because today marks the first time that OOCL is receiving newbuildings in the 21 thousand TEU size.

A crane has collapsed at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea, killing six workers and injuring 22, reports Reuters. The South Korean shipbuilder quoted as saying that rescuers are searching for people trapped under debris after the 32-tonne crane fell on a ship at its shipyard on Geoje island. The incident took place during the construction of an oil platform for French energy company Total's Martin Linge field off Norway. The company said the crane collided with another crane before it collapsed onto the ship. All of those killed were workers hired by various subcontractors at Samsung. A spokesman for Total's Norwegian subsidiary said that it was too early to say what would be the consequences for delivering the platform.

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) has received orders from government officials to cease production on five of its ships presently under construction, following a series of deadly shipyard incidents, Yonhap reported. The government orders are in response to a fire which broke out Tuesday inside a gas tanker being built in a shipyard on Geoje Island, killing one worker and injuring at least seven others. The accident follows a similar incident that killed two and injured seven at Okpo Shipyard in August. Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor ordered the shipbuilder to stop construction until safety can be guaranteed aboard the ship that caught on fire Tuesday as well as four others of the same kind, Yonhap reported.

Petronas has laid keel for its second floating liquefaction plant, Petronas Floating LNG2 (PFLNG2), in Geoje Island, South Korea. Petronas, together with JGC Group and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), the consortium leading the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning of the PFLNG2, commemorated the milestone with a keel laying ceremony on October 28 at the SHI shipyard, signifying the formal start of the mega construction phase of the PFLNG2 with a collective weight of 134,000 metric tons. The Petronas delegation was headed by Vice President of Global LNG Projects, Adnan Zainol Abidin who was accompanied by Vice President & Venture Director of LNG Projects – Domestic, Datuk Abdullah Karim.

PETRONAS achieved another milestone with the official steel cutting of its second floating liquefied natural gas facility, the PETRONAS Floating LNG2 (PFLNG2) in a ceremony held on 11 June 2015 at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) Shipyard in Geoje Island, South Korea. The PETRONAS delegation was headed by Senior Vice President & Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation (PRPC), Dr. Colin Wong Hee Huing who was accompanied by Vice President & Venture Director of LNG Projects – Domestic, Datuk Abdullah Karim and Vice President of Technology & Engineering, En. Zakaria Kasah. “PETRONAS made a bold decision in January 2014 to make its Final Investment Decision (FID) for the PFLNG2 project.

South Shields based Solar Solve Marine received an order from Korea for four ship-sets of its SOLASAFE roller sunscreens. The screens are to be installed at the navigation bridge windows of four very large container carriers currently under construction at Daewoo’s DSME Okpo shipyard on Geoje Island. With a length of 366 mts, a beam of 48.8 mts and depth of 30 mts the vessels will all be 152,700 dwt., and whilst not the biggest in the world, they will still be classed as mega carriers with a maximum capacity of around 13,100 teu.

The 13,208 TEU containership  was christened 'OOCL Chongqing' at a ceremony in the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard on Geoje Island, South Korea. The OOCL Chongqing will be serving the Asia-Europe trade on the Loop 5 service where her port rotation is: Kwangyang / Busan / Shanghai / Ningbo / Yantian / Shekou / Singapore / Suez Canal / Rotterdam / Hamburg / Southampton / Suez Canal / Singapore and back to Kwangyang in a 77-day round trip. Among distinguished guests was the vessel Sponsor Mr. He Guangbei, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive of BOC Hong Kong (Holdings) Ltd.

ABB contracted to provide energy-efficient and environmental friendly solution for four LNG vessels to be built in Korea. Total orders in the first quarter of 2013 landed by ABB, worth close to $40 million, came from three gas transportation industry players and are for the supply of power and electric propulsion equipment for LNG vessels to be built in South Korea. ABB will supply its propulsion plant to work in combination with a duel fuel diesel engine plant on board a 155,000 cu m capacity LNG carrier ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) by a South East Asian ship owner.

Almi Sun and Almi Explorer were delivered by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Shipyard, Geoje Island, Korea and have commenced their operational lives. These ships are a further development of Almi Horizon delivered back in 2011. The latest deliveries have electronically controlled main engines, each turning a slightly larger propeller and they benefit from pre-swirl stators to further enhance energy efficiency. The ships have been verified by LR in accordance with the voluntary energy-efficiency requirements of the IMO's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships.

Optimarin has moved to reinforce its market leading position by challenging the integrity of its filter components, through a rigorous program of testing in conjunction with Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The initiative, understood to be unique for a ballast water treatment (BWT) system supplier, saw Optimarin make a substantial investment to put its three leading filter suppliers – Boll & Kirch, Filtersafe and Filtrex - to the test at Goeje Island in South Korea. The motivation was simple; to challenge, and ultimately demonstrate, the reliability of this most crucial BWT system component (giving potential and existing customers real peace of mind), while also feeding the test results back into the Optimarin and individual supplier development teams in a drive for ever-greater performance.

Statoil, on behalf of the licence owners, issued a Letter of Intent (LOI) to Samsung Heavy Industries for a permanent floating oil storage unit (FSU). The contract is worth an estimated US$ 230-million and includes options to buy two additional units. The new storage unit will replace the existing buoy loading system on the Heidrun field in the Norwegian Sea. The Heidrun field has been developed with a floating tension leg platform with a concrete hull and has been on stream since 1995.

The focused panel sessions at the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers (SNAME) Annual Meeting and Expo (October 21-23 at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island) will feature four timely topics: Electric Ships; Renewable Energy from the Oceans; Unmanned and Autonomous Ships of the Future; and Ship Efficiency in the Greenhouse Gas Era. Each two-hour panel session will be chaired and moderated by experienced SNAME members. ChevronTexaco Shipping Co. LLC announced one of its affiliates will serve as the operator of the North West Shelf Venture (Venture) Gas Project's newest vessel, the Northwest Swan. The vessel is currently planned to deliver liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the project's Western Australian operations to customers in Japan, Korea and China, as well as provide opportunities to deliver into the LNG spot market. Mike Carthew, president of ChevronTexaco Shipping Co. LLC, said, "We are proud that ChevronTexaco has been chosen by the Venture participants to serve as operator of the Northwest Swan, the ninth and largest vessel in their fleet.

Two new LNG vessels that will join the Qatargas fleet have been handed over to the owners’ consortium by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Ltd (DSME) at its ship building yard in the Geoje Island in South Korea. The vessels Al Ruwais and Al Safliya will now proceed with bunkering and leave South Korea in the next few days. The first cargo will be delivered to Japan using one of these vessels before the year end. Two more vessels are expected to be delivered from other South Korean yards this month. Qatargas announced the naming of the Q-Flex LNG vessel Tembek at a ceremony held at Samsung Heavy Industries shipbuilding yard in Geoje Island, South Korea. The Tembek will be used to ship LNG produced by Qatargas 2's Train 4 to customers in Europe. It is one of 14 ships that are being built in Korea to service Qatargas Trains 4 and 5. The LNG vessel is owned through a joint venture between Qatargas Transport Company (Nakilat) and Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG), from which Qatargas will charter the vessel. Naomi Campbell officially named the ship the fourth of 45 large LNG ships to be delivered for Qatar at the event presided over by Ahmed Al Khulaifi, Qatargas Chief Operating Officer - Commercial & Shipping.

Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. has named the LNG Carrier Al Gattara, marking a new generation of Q-Flex Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, said to be the world’s safest, most advanced and largest ships to transport this critical energy source. This vessel is the first in a series of four sister ships to be delivered to OSG Nakilat, the joint venture between OSG and Qatargas Transport Company (Nakilat). The ship’s sponsor, Mrs. Cathy Houston, wife of Dennis Houston, Executive Vice President, ExxonMobil Refining and Supply Company, will officially name the Al Gattara in a ceremony today at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard. The second ship in the new fleet, the Tembek, constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje Island, South Korea, will be named on Tuesday, September 11. Mrs.

Qatargas has named the first two Q-Flex LNG vessels - Al Ruwais and Al Safliya - at a ceremony held at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Ltd. (DSME) ship building yard in Geoje Island. The ceremony which was presided over by His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Energy and Industry and Mr. Neil Duffin, President of ExxonMobil Development Co. officially named the two ships which are the first of 45 large LNG ships to be delivered for Qatar. The Al Ruwais and Al Safliya will be used to ship LNG produced in Qatargas 2, Train 4 to customers in Europe. They are the first of 14 ships that are being built in Korea to service Qatargas Trains 4 and 5.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.won an order worth $1.27b to build an oil drilling and production platform for an Angolan unit of energy giant Chevron Corp. The platform, to be built at Okpo Bay of Geoje Island, about 406 km south of Seoul, will be installed in the Tombua-Landana offshore oil field off the coast of Angola, southwestern Africa, Antara reported.
