Dock Starts 170-Day Journey
On July 2 the ex-Portland Dock # 4, now the Grand Bahama Shipyard Dock # 2, departed Portland,Ore., bound for it's new home at the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Under a marine management contract with Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBSY), Seaspan has chartered the Global Towing Alliance Ocean Going Tug "De Yue". The 'De Yue' is a 20,800 bhp, 200-mt BP, twin screw deep sea salvage tug owned by Guangzhou Salvage of China and is uniquely suited for a tow of this magnitude due to her high BHP and her large bunker capacity. The 'De Yue' is expected to take approximately 170 days encompassing approximately 20,000 NM with an average tow speed of about 5.5 knots. Routing is specifically designed to avoid major weather patterns in each of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

Measuring 984 x 2.296 ft. (300 x 700 m), the floating dock is capable of lifting 87,000 tons and is one of the largest in the western hemisphere able to accommodate vessels of up to 150,000 grt or 250,000 dwt. Via a marine management contract with Seaspan, the yard has chartered Global Towing Alliance Ocean Going Tug, De Yue. Measuring 299 ft. (91 m) with installed power of 20,800 bhp, De Yue provides a bollard pull of 200 tons from a twin-screw configuration.

One Person Missing After Boat Capsized
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person who ended up in the Pungo River near Hobucken, N.C. after a boat capsized. The 21-foot TowBoatUS vessel was towing a 47-foot recreational boat when the lead vessel capsized near the river entrance Thursday morning. Officials say and they are now searching the water for a 45-year-old TowBoatUS captain reported to be wearing coveralls, rubber boots and a lifejacket. OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.
Global Maritime Completes Njord A Disconnection and Tow to Shore
Global Maritime Consultancy & Engineering, a provider of marine warranty, dynamic positioning and engineering services to the offshore sector, has successfully led the disconnection and towing operations of the Njord A semi-submersible floating production platform from the Njord field. The Njord A platform arrived safely in Klosterfjorden on the August 23, where a handover to Kværner was achieved. The 346 nautical-mile journey was carried out by Global Maritime, on behalf of the operator Statoil.
USCG Approves Global Maritime as TPO for Subchapter M Services
Global Maritime Consultancy & Engineering, a provider of offshore marine warranty, dynamic positioning and engineering services, has been approved by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to provide Subchapter M compliance services as a Third Party Organization (TPO). Global Maritime will offer a comprehensive suite of services to all towing vessel operators looking to comply with Subchapter M guidelines with its expertise including audits, surveys, consultancy, training services, and the design and deployment of safety management systems. In addition, Global Maritime has licensed Professional Engineers (P.E.s) on staff to perform structural plan reviews.
Call for Carriage Ban on Non-Compliant Fuel
A group of leading environmental and maritime shipping organizations have called for the prohibition of transporting non-compliant marine fuels once the global 0.5 percent sulfur cap takes effect in 2020. The United Nation's International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed that from 1st January 2020 the maximum permitted sulphur content of marine fuel (outside Emission Control Areas) will reduce from 3.5% to 0.5%. Unless a ship is using an approved equivalent compliance method, there should be no reason for it to be carrying non-compliant fuels for combustion on board.
Global Maritime Promotes Thomassen
Marine, offshore and engineering consultancy Global Maritime Consultancy & Engineering has appointed Espen Thomassen as Regional Manager for the Americas. Thomassen has been tasked with growing Global Maritime’s business throughout the region, which, in addition to Houston, includes offices in Brazil and Canada. He will also lead Global Maritime’s involvement in providing Sub Chapter M compliance services to inland waterways towing vessels throughout the US. Sub Chapter M represents new U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) standards on the inspection, standards and safety policies of towing vessels.
Chevron Shipping Awards Oil, LNG Contract to GAC
US-based Chevron Shipping Company (CSC) has awarded the Dubai-based GAC Group a global three-year ship agency contract for both crude and LNG vessels. The new agreement secures the provider of shipping, logistics and marine services GAC’s status as Chevron’s exclusive global agent in a partnership that spans more than 20 years, more than 15 of which have seen GAC as its sole global agent. Operations will be overseen by GAC Hub Agency offices in Dubai, Houston and Singapore with support from GAC’s network of offices and approved agents worldwide.
Cargo Vessel Runs Aground off St. Thomas
A 223-foot cargo vessel has run aground near Charlotte Amalie Harbor in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. Coast Guard said its watchstanders in San Juan where contacted at approximately 5 a.m. Tuesday by St. Thomas Harbor pilots who reported that the Togo-flagged cargo vessel Ocean Spirit I had run aground just off of the entrance of the harbor’s East Gregory Channel. There are no reported signs of distress or oil leaking from the vessel, according to the Coast Guard, whose marine casualty investigators are on scene investigating the cause of the incident.

Puerto Rico Towing Assists 'Run Out of Gas' Ship
Tugs 'Triton' and 'Honcho' of the Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. recently assisted a drifting vessel off the coast of Puerto Rico. The cargo ship Global Destiny, owned and operated by Diavlos Maritime based in Athen, Greece, called for assistance the morning of Saturday, March 16. NTSB Issues Report on 2016 Columbia River Bulker Grounding
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report on its investigation into the November 2016 grounding of the bulk carrier Nenita in the Columbia River. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was fully laden when it suffered an engine failure that impacted its ability to maneuver and subsequently ran aground at Three Tree Point on the Washington State side of the river. The ship’s bulbous bow and hull were damaged, but no injuries or pollution were reported. The vessel was towed to Longview, Wash.

F/V Deep Sea Refloated
Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. successfully rigged and refloated the sunken 140-foot fishing vessel. The abandoned and derelict fishing vessel Deep Sea, while at anchor in Penn Cove, WA, caught fire and sank in 60 feet of water. The U.S. Coast Guard and Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) responded and deployed boom to contain the leaking fuel oil in an effort to protect the world renowned mussel and clam fishery in the cove. Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. was contracted by the DOE to raise the 140-foot wreck and mitigate the pollution hazard from the cove.
Great Lakes Towing, Shipyard to Hire 100
The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard have announced plans to hire 100 employees before the end of January 2018 to support continued growth driven by client demand. The company said it is seeking candidates to fill a wide range of positions, including shipyard welders, shipfitters and more. “At The Towing Company, we’re looking for great people to join our team,” said Joe Starck, the company’s president. Wilhelmsen Relocates to Singapore
Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) will be relocating its global headquarters from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Singapore within the first quarter of 2018. Global Ship Lease Extends TC with CMA CGM
Global Ship Lease, a containership charter owner, announced that it has agreed to an extension of its charter with CMA CGM for the GSL Tianjin, a 2005-built, 8,063 TEU containership. The vessel will be chartered for a period of eight to twelve months (at the charterer's option) at a fixed rate of $11,900 per day, commencing in direct continuation from its current charter on January 26, 2018.
