India's GSL Delivers Patrol Vessel to Mauritius

Indo-Mauritian maritime defence Co-operation got another fillip with the delivery of first Fast Patrol Vessel, MCGS VICTORY, designed and built in-house by Goa Shipyard Limited(GSL) for Mauritius Coast Guard, on 26th September 2016 at GSL. The vessel is primarily designed for Coastal Patrolling, Anti-piracy, Anti-smuggling, Anti-drug Surveillance, Anti-poaching Operations, and Search and Rescue Operations. The vessel is 50 meter long, fitted with 30 mm CRN-91 Gun, 12.7 mm HMGs & 7.62 mm MMGs besides state-of-the-art Navigation and Communication equipment and is capable of achieving a high speed of 35 knots. Significantly, trials were undertaken in peak monsoon months and the vessel achieved all design parameters. The ship was ceremonially handed over by RAdm.

GSL Patrol Boats for Mauritius Coast Guard

Mauritius is an island nation in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The country has just 2,040 square kilometers of land on several islands but a huge exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 2.3 million square kilometers. The major challenge of patrolling this vast area of the Indian Ocean became somewhat more manageable with the delivery of the final five of ten Fast Interceptor Boats designed and built by the Government of India owned Shipyard M/s Goa Shipyard Ltd. The Mauritius National Coast Guard will use the boats to enhance their abilities to provide effective surveillance for fisheries and customs, as well as search and rescue. The aluminum boats are 14.3-meters long with a beam of four meters and a molded depth of .9 meters.

Goa Shipyard Seeks Foreign Tie-up for $5.3 billion Navy Order for MCMVs

India's Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) has decided to tie up with the foreign yards for the technology transfer required to create these high-tech ships, after bagging the deal to build Mines Counter-Measures Vessels (MCMVs) for the Indian Navy. Chairman and managing director (CMD) of GSL Rear Admiral (retired) Shekhar Mital said that the building of 12 MCMVs by the GSL would start after 3 years, following the approval of Defence Acquisition Council and finalisation of the contract. The Union Defence Ministry had recently cleared the Rs 32,000 crore ($5.3 billion) -worth project to manufacture 12 MCMVs, which will be built by the GSL. "We will have to tie up with a foreign shipyard because we don't have the technology to build MCMVs. The contract will be finalized in 8 months.
