Thern, Inc. is expanding their catalog with the introduction of the new Thern Silver Line of products. The Thern Silver Line is launching with the new imported stainless steel TSSBW Series hand winch. Available in three models offering lifting load capacities of 600, 900 and 1300 lbs, the new TSSBW Series hand winch is fabricated of 304 grade stainless steel and features solid steel machine cut gears, gear covers and automatic brakes. TSSBW Series hand winches are designed for light duty applications requiring corrosion resistance.

OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.
JonRie’s New Assist Winch for Bisso Towboat
JonRie informs its new Series 230 Assist Winch has been commissioned on the new Bisso Towboat ASD Becky S. The new JonRie Series 230 Ship Assist Winch is a new version of the Series 230 winches line. The winch features JonRie’s independent drive level wind, but with the additional installation of a Logan clutch on the drive. When the winch is heaving or paying out hawser the level wind drive is engaged, and when the tug is working under heavy ship assist loads the level wind is unclutched.
Damen Delivers Custom-Made Offshore Winches to Fugro
Damen Maaskant Shipyards, part of Damen Shipyards Group, has delivered two dedicated offshore winches to Fugro. The Dutch shipyard was responsible for the design, engineering and manufacturing of the two winches from its base in Stellendam in the Netherlands. Maaskant also worked very closely with Bosch Rexroth, which delivered the hydraulic drive system. Classified by DNV GL, the two winches – a constant tension winch with an own weight of 2,000 kg and a drilling winch (own weight 3,500 kg) - have to meet the very highest offshore standards.
JonRie Winch set for McAllister Towing
JonRie Marine Winches supplied its 6th ship set of Full 90 Ton Winch to McAllister Towing of NY installed on their new tug Jeffrey McAllister. The 92’ (30 meter) x 36’ (11 meter) Z-Drive Tug was built by Eastern Shipbuilding, Panama City, FL. The 5,150 HP tugs with a bollard pull of 75 Tons is the latest addition to the McAllister Fleet. The JonRie Series 250 Escort Winch was designed to handle in the Recover mode the full Bollard Pull of the vessel. The winch is capable of 180,000 lbs.
Norway Awards 75 Oil Exploration Licenses
Norway's energy ministry has awarded 75 offshore exploration blocks to oil companies in a so-called predefined areas (APA) licensing round, handing out acreage to 34 firms, of which 19 got at least one operatorship, it said on Tuesday. A total of 39 firms had applied for the offered acreage, up from 33 companies that applied in the previous round a year ago, when the ministry awarded 56 exploration licenses. Rolls-Royce Training Center Opens in Brazil
To better support marine customers in South America, Rolls-Royce has opened a new training center in Brazil, to cater for customers operating the large number of vessels with Rolls-Royce systems that work in country’s deep water oil and gas fields. New Foss Tug Outfitted with New Ship-Assist & Escort Winch
Markey Machinery Company of Seattle, Wash., has developed a new Electric Bow Ship-Assist & Escort Winch and Electric Stern General Purpose Deck Winch for Foss Maritime, in response to their application requirements for the new 5,000 hp ASD Tug, Morgan Foss, constructed at Foss Maritime's Rainier Shipyard. The type DEPGF-42 Electric Ship-Assist & Escort Winch installed on the bow features a 75 hp electric-motor drive, a drum sized for over 500 ft. of eight in. soft-line, a level-wind fairleader, and an auxiliary warping-head of 24 in. diameter. The high-capacity drum brake will hold well over 400,000 lbs. Markey also outfitted this winch-system with its Line-Tension Display System which shows the operator the tension in the line while the drum brake is set.

JonRie Marine Winches supplied its fifth ship set of full bollard pull winches to New York’s McAllister Towing for installation on its new tug, Tate McAllister. The 92-foot x 32-foot Z-Drive tug was designed and built by Washburn & Doughty of East Boothbay, Maine. The 6,000-horsepower tug, with a bollard pull of 90 tons, is the latest addition to the McAllister fleet. University of Kiel Acquires CORMAC Winch

Bay Delta Equips New Tug with Markey Winches
San Francisco headquartered Bay Delta Maritime commissioned a sixth Delta Class Tug with Nichols Brothers Boat Builders out of Whidbey Island Washington. The Jensen designed M/V Delta Audrey, is a 100’x40’ z-drive tractor tug that is set to be delivered in June. The Tractor Tug is ABS load line certified and consists of a complete propulsion system that includes two Caterpillar 3516C diesel engines coupled to the Rolls Royce propulsion package. This system will produce 93 tons of bollard pull with a combined horsepower of 6800, giving the tug exceptional pulling power and maneuverability.
Barge Innovations: The Yo Yo Winch
The new Yo Yo Winch, using technology from WW Patterson Company of Pittsburgh, is designed to prevent two of the most dangerous and unstable conditions in a deck-hand’s life: the snarling bird’s nest of tangled rope or wire that results when lines gets kinked or snagged, and the threat of injury from snapped cables. WW Patterson Company reported that field testing of the Yo Yo Winch produced evidence that the design is 75 percent more efficient than traditional ratchets for making up and breaking tow.
Fratelli Neri Orders Damen Tug
One of the largest Italian tug owners, Fratelli Neri S.p.A, ordered its first Damen tug, an ASD 3212, on 21 July 2015. The vessel will be the first ASD tug in the Mediterranean region with a Damen Render Recovery Escort winch. The family-owned, Livorno-based harbour towage company has been in operation for over 100 years.
