The Quest to Find and Explore USS Indianapolis

Sunk by Japanese torpedoes near the end of World War II, heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis disappeared to the darkest depths of the Philippine Sea, where it remained undiscovered for more than 70 years. Recently a team of civilian researchers led by Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen set out equipped with an arsenal of high-tech search equipment on a mission to locate the historic vessel last seen on July 30, 1945. The story of the USS Indianapolis is one of military might, heroism, tragedy, controversy and mystery.

MTN Communications (MTN) has announced another maritime industry first with the launch of its high-definition live television service at sea, MTN Worldwide TV HD (MTN-TV HD). “MTN-TV HD delivers an amazing viewing experience onboard,” said Graham Douglas, media and communications manager, P&O Cruises and Cunard. “We can now experience TV at sea like we can at home. Satellite Service Alliance Between Inmarsat & Cisco

Global Xpress (GX) video & multi-media content to be delivered by alliance of Inmarsat and Cisco. Cisco will provide Inmarsat with a state-of-the-art satellite applications service delivery platform and a high-performance access network for GX, its new superfast global broadband system launching in 2014. The world leader in networking solutions, Cisco will also develop a router for end-users that give them access to both the BGAN network and Global Xpress. Cisco will build and operate the network on a fully managed basis before transferring it to Inmarsat. GD: $33m for Submarine Photonics Masts

General Dynamics Electric Boat has been awarded a $32.9 million contract modification by the U.S. Navy to procure three backup photonics masts for Virginia-class submarines. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). In Virginia-class submarines, traditional periscopes have been supplanted by photonics masts – non-hull-penetrating masts that do not extend physically into the control room. Information is digitally recorded by cameras in the mast, transmitted through fiber optics into the ship and processed with on-board image processors. Each photonics mast has an HDTV digital color camera, an infrared camera and a laser rangefinder. www.generaldynamics.com

Intellian’s New k4 Ka-Band HDTV Antenna

New Antennas from Sea Tel

Sea Tel has released the first USAT (Ultra Small Aperture Terminal) antenna. Sea Tel announced a smaller, lighter 60 cm antenna system, the first 60 cm marine antenna to meet FCC’s and ETSI’s specification allowing multi mode use with Spread Spectrum, TDMA and SCPC services. The USAT 24 is aimed at Coastal trading vessels and inland craft. Services are currently being Beta trialed with a number of modem providers including Hughes, Viasat, iDirect, and STM on a number of satellite operator’s footprints world-wide. SeaMobile Wins NOAA Contracts

SeaMobile Enterprises has beeen awarded two major contracts by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). SeaMobile has signed a three-year contract to provide global VSAT satellite services to the entire fleet of ships operated by NOAA throughout the globe. SeaMobile has also been awarded the integration, installation, operations and maintenance of a 3.7m VSAT terminal system for the new NOAA ship, Okeanos Explorer. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce and conducts environmental research and serves as the primary source of expert information on weather data, forecasts, warnings and climate change. SeaMobile will provide up to 21 ships in the NOAA fleet with voice and data access as a critical link while the ships are on research missions at sea.
