Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division partnered with the American Heart Association to teach shipbuilders how to perform hands-only CPR during a demonstration Thursday. The American Heart Association provided the shipyard a mobile CPR unit for on-site instruction and take-home kits to promote hands-on practice with family and friends. With more than 300 employees in attendance, representatives from the HealthWaves wellness program were onsite to greet shipbuilders and discuss the importance of the CPR training led by American Heart Association representatives. "It's important for shipbuilders and their families to learn CPR because with this knowledge they can help save lives," said HealthWaves Program Director Becky Johnson.

Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, says it is doing its part to fight obesity and bolster the health of its employees. The shipyard's health-conscious changes have helped it succeed as a Platinum Fit-Friendly Worksite. Fit-Friendly Worksites are recognized by the American Heart Association as employers who go above and beyond when it comes to employee health. These companies offer both nutritional services and physical activities aimed at supporting the employees' health. "We are honored to receive this award," said Edmond E. Hughes, Ingalls' vice president of human resources and administration. "There were only four companies in the state of Mississippi to earn a Platinum status, so we are part of a very selective group in the state.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding's 'HealthWaves' wellness program host the sixth annual 5K fun run. The 5K is a fun event that encourages families, friends and co-workers to get out and do something active together," said Brady Goggin, HealthWaves' program coordinator. This, the sixth annual 5K fun run started at Victory Landing Park near the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) and went north on West Avenue to 35th Street.
