Hornblower Hybrid Technology Award Finalist

The San Francisco-based Hornblower Hybrid has been named a finalist in an international awards competition for Environmental Technology of the Year. Sustainable Shipping, an international online news and information resource, hosts the annual competition and will announce the 2009 winners at in London on July 15th, 2009. The Hornblower Hybrid, part of the Alcatraz Cruises fleet, is the first hybrid passenger vessel in the United States. The revolutionary design combines wind, diesel and electricity to power the vessel.

Hornblower Hybrid, the first vessel powered by diesel, hydrogen, batteries, wind and solar energy, arrived in New York Harbor. After nearly two years of construction and the work of more than 300 individuals, the Hybrid will service New York City upon completion of United States Coast Guard sea trials and certifications. The innovative vessel reduces emissions, uses minimal diesel, and features several recycled and reclaimed materials, LEED-certified carpet and energy-efficient LED lighting.

Battery Hybrid Patrol Boat under Development

PBES and NORIS Automation GmbH have partnered on the hybrid drive systems for Europe’s first battery hybrid patrol vessel. The 45m long vessel is being built at Baltic Workboats Shipyard in Estonia and will be delivered with 273kWh of PBES Power 65 battery modules. “PBES batteries provide hours of low speed propulsion with reduced sound and heat signature as well as greatly increased efficiency,” said Brent Perry, PBES Chief Executive Officer. “The vessel is first of many that we will be seeing in law enforcement.

Alcatraz Cruises Sustainability Efforts Honored

Alcatraz Cruises, the National Park Service concessioner of ferry service to Alcatraz Island, has been awarded the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award in the category of Best Low Carbon Transport and Technology. Award winners were announced November 11 at the World Travel Market conference in London. Alcatraz Cruises was a finalist alongside the British website Seat61.com and the Swiss Railway company Swiss Travel System. Only one other US company was honored – Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Washburn & Doughty Wins Hybrid Tug Orders

East Boothbay, Maine based Washburn & Doughty said it has secured a contract with Harbor Docking and Towing, of Lake Charles, La., to design and build two 93’ x 38’ Hybrid Z Drive Tugs. The 93’ x 38’ hull is a proven design with 18 tugs in operation and 4 under construction. The vessel will be built as a Harbor Assist Vessel as defined in USCG Subchapter M and admeasure less than 200 gross tons U.S. regulatory tonnage. Caterpillar Marine will provide a ‘stem-to-stern’ Cat content hybrid propulsion system, with support from both Milton Cat and Louisiana Cat in the sales effort. Hybrid Hype

The Hudson and East rivers are constantly abuzz with swarms of ferry, patrol, and cargo traffic. In August, New York hosted the Transportation Research Board’s ferry committee for a midyear conference. I was fortunate to be a guest presenter at this event and speak on behalf of vessel operations on the U.S. Marine Highways. With such high use on these historic waters, it was not surprising that much of the discussion circled back to the environment and vessel impact. When congress expanded the Marine Highways program in 2010, it was a big win for the marine industry.

Hybrid Ferries Planned for Alcatraz Tours

Two hybrid ferries powered by the wind and sun will carry visitors to Alcatraz under a new ten-year contract between the National Park Service and Hornblower Cruises and Events. To help win the multi-million dollar contract, the ferry operator committed to build two brand new hybrid-electric passenger vessels that maximize the use of solar and wind energy, with zero emissions at the wharf. The first will be built within two years, and the second by year five. The hybrid vessels in the winning proposal by Hornblower were designed by Solar Sailor and modeled on the Solar Sailor ferry in Sydney, Australia. Bluewater Network introduced the Solar Sailor concept to ferry planners on the Bay five years ago and have been lobbying for such a vessel ever since.

It’s Electric: Charging Asia’s First E-ferry

Innovative charging technologies connect Asia’s first e-ferry to electrical power, eliminating emissions and dramatically reducing operating costs. The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and that entered service last year, is fully electrically powered. This follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. The charging solution was supplied by Swiss based engineering firm Cavotec, who said the technology ensures safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth.

S.F.-Alcatraz Ferry Operator Eyes Hybrids

With the signing of a new 10-year contract between the National Park Service and Hornblower Cruises and Events, two hybrid-electric ferries will eventually be crossing to the famed former penitentiary Alcatraz Island from San Francisco, San Jose Mercury News reported. Alcatraz Cruises, a division of Hornblower Cruises and Events, will take over the route, now handled by Blue and Gold Fleet, on Sept. 25, the National Park Service recently announced. The new boats will comply with emission requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Hornblower Cruises and Events has agreed to build the first ferry within two years and the second vessel within five years.

Wärtsilä Developing Hybrid Tug for Brazil

Wärtsilä said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new environmentally friendly tug design for a new port facility being built in the Brazilian city of São Mateus. The MoU, signed with Petrocity, parent company of a new port facility, will see Wärtsilä develop a harbor tug design based on its recently launched Wärtsilä HYTug, which features hybrid propulsion and energy storage using batteries. Hornblower Tests Eco-Friendly Paints

By participating in an EPA-funded study of copper-free paints, Hornblower Cruises & Events is pioneering efforts to protect marine life and minimize boating impact in San Diego Bay. Researchers will spend the next two years comparing the effectiveness of ten test paints recently applied to the hull of the San Diego-based M/V Newport Hornblower. "We're doing some experimental painting," said Jim Unger, vice president of Hornblower Cruises and Events. "Traditionally, bottom paint has had toxins – either heavy metals or other biocides – that get into the water system. The Port of San Diego has partnered with Hornblower on the study, which responds to a 1996 San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board report identifying high levels of dissolved copper in Shelter Island Yacht Basin waters.

18 New Ferries Needed for New NYC Ferry Service

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the Citywide Ferry Service is on track to launch in 2017, with the selection of Hornblower, Inc. as its operator. The new service, which will include up to 20 boats and connect 21 New York City eighborhoods for the price of a single subway ride ($2.75) is scheduled to be fully operational by 2018, and is estimated to carry 4.6 million trips per year across six routes. “For the price of a single subway ride, tens-of-thousands of New Yorkers are going to have a new public transit option linking them to jobs…

Hornblower Gets Statue of Liberty Contract

Hornblower Yachts will soon begin shuttling tourists to the Statue of Liberty, reports said. The National Park Service has chosen Hornblower Yachts, Inc. to run the ferry concession from lower Manhattan and New Jersey to Liberty and Ellis Island. For more than twenty years, the Statue of Liberty ferries have been run by Circle Line. Hornblower has won a ten-year ferry service concession, expected to begin in October. Hornblower Employees Lead Fleet Week

Hornblower Cruises & Events' employees have led a movement among San Francisco's sailing and boating community to celebrate Spirit of Fleet Week in lieu of the cancellation of this weekend's events. Bringing together historic and recreation vessels, a Parade of Ships is planned for October 6 and 7 at 3:00 p.m. After learning the fate of this year's Fleet Week, Hornblower employees searched for another venue to express their appreciation to America's Armed Forces and raise money for the American Red Cross Relief Fund. Fleet Week charters and cruises will offer military personnel free admission and their family members a 50 percent discount on cruises. Each cruise will feature a tribute to military personnel, and 10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

Hornblower Cruises & Events names Loebl Sr VP, Marine Operations

Hornblower Cruises & Events (HCE) has just named Gordon Loebl Senior Vice President, Marine Operations, according to Chairman and CEO Terry MacRae. Loebl will be responsible for supporting Hornblower Cruises & Events’ multiple home ports; overseeing facilities, capital projects and associated budgets; establishing and maintaining relationships with regulatory agencies; directing the corporate engineering and project team; ensuring safety standards; participating in new business development; and leading efforts to develop and utilize new technology.

Horizon Delivers Second NYC Ferry Newbuild

Alabama shipbuilder Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. said it has delivered the second of 13 NYC Ferry vessels being built for NYC Ferry Operated by Hornblower, which will launch this summer. With sea trials and U.S. Coast Guard certification now behind her, H201 will get a final cleanup and the Hornblower crew will begin the nearly 1,900-mile journey from Horizon’s yard to New York City. The first ferry, H200, arrived in New York Harbor on Sunday morning, April 2 after a 13-day journey.

Hornblower Marine Services will be responsible for the complete start-up and operating infrastructure, in addition to the daily operations of Bahamas Fast Ferry Service Limited. This new ferry service will provide high-speed transportation between Nassau, Harbor Island, Eleuthera and other destinations. The 114 ft. (35 m) Solent Class, high-speed catamaran, designed by FBM Marine and built by Pequot River Shipworks, will be used to transport visitors, as well as Bahamian residents (177 total) at speeds of 35-40 knots. Hornblower has entered into yet another venture, this time with Virginia-based MetroMarine Holdings for a passenger ferry service between downtown Hampton and downtown Norfolk.

New Shuttle Tanker Design for Teekay

A new shuttle tanker concept developed by the world’s largest shuttle tanker services provider, Teekay, will offer a new level of innovation, says Wärtsilä, whose smart technology solutions will be featured on the new vessels. To date, Teekay has ordered four of these ‘next generation’ ships, each to be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) yard in South Korea. According to Wärtsilä, the newbuilds will feature a broad assortment of its latest technology innovations, all of which are central to the concept’s overall performance gains.

SUNY Maritime to Train NYC’s Next Ferry Captains

NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower is teaming up with the oldest merchant marine academy in the country to deliver a world class training program before a majority of the new NYC Ferry vessels even arrive in New York Harbor. SUNY Maritime College was founded in 1874 as the New York Nautical School, the first school in the nation devoted to training merchant mariners. As part of this new collaboration between NYC Ferry and SUNY Maritime, future captains and crew will have access to SUNY Maritime’s top notch classroom facilities and experienced maritime faculty.

Hornblower Names Shaw COO

Hornblower Cruises & Events has appointed Bob Shaw, a senior executive with more than three decades of operations experience, to the position of chief operating officer. In his new role, Shaw will be responsible for day-to-day management of all Hornblower companies, including charter yacht and public dining operations and two National Park Service concession contracts. "Bob’s management and passenger vessel industry experience along with his accomplishments as an executive for several multi-million dollar companies give him invaluable perspective.
