Carnival Splendor – Update

At approximately 6 am Monday morning, Nov. 8, (U.S. Pacific Standard Time), a fire was detected in the aft engine room aboard the cruise ship Carnival Splendor. The fire was extinguished. There were no injuries to guests or crew. The ship has been operating on auxiliary generators and engineers have been unable to restore additional power to the vessel. Thus far, one tug boat has reached the ship and has begun towing with additional tugs en route to expedite the vessel’s return. Given the ship’s speed and current position, we have decided to take the vessel to San Diego where it is expected to arrive late Thursday. Additionally, we are in the process of making all the necessary hotel and flight arrangements for our guests.

Wärtsilä Engines To Power Queen Mary 2

Wärtsilä Corporation will deliver four Wärtsilä 46 EnviroEngines totaling 67.2 MW power output for Cunard Line's new luxury transatlantic liner, Queen Mary 2. These engines will incorporate the latest common-rail fuel injection technology for operation without any visible smoke. Due for delivery in late 2003 by the French shipbuilder Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, the "Queen Mary 2" will be the world's largest passenger vessel. Measuring 345 m long by 40 m beam and drawing 10 m, the 150,000 grt liner will have a maximum speed of about 30 knots. Electrical power for propulsion and all shipboard services will be generated by a 115.5 MW combined diesel- and gas turbine-electric power plant.

Feature: Queen Mary 2 New Technology Melded to the North Atlantic Tradition

Confounding the skeptics who said the 70,300-gt Queen Elizabeth 2 would be the last transatlantic liner ever built, the 150,000-gt Queen Mary 2 is set to make her service debut in January 2004, signifying a $780-million investment in a luxury passenger ship structurally engineered for the North Atlantic. Destined to uphold and revitalize the Cunard liner tradition, the 30-knot QM2 will break new ground in passenger ship technology, while incorporating lessons learned with the 1969-commissioned QE2. The challenge of fulfilling an extremely tough schedule in a notoriously harsh environment, and of meeting rising customer expectations as to service quality, comfort and reliability in all conditions, permeates every aspect of the technical design.

Carnival Spirit Fitted With Cruise Industry's First Smokeless Diesel Engines

In a working partnership between Carnival Corp. and the Finnish marine power systems supplier Wärtsilä, the new 86,000-ton cruise ship Carnival Spirit will be fitted with the cruise industry's first smokeless diesel engines. The Carnival Spirit, the first ship in a new class for Carnival Cruise Lines, is currently under construction at Kvaerner Masa-Yards and is expected to enter service in late spring 2001. Its inaugural season will include two Panama Canal sailings, a series of Alaska and Hawaii voyages, and a new eight-day schedule from Miami. Initially, two of the ship's six Wärtsilä 9L46D engines will be modified with the new "smokeless" engine technology.

Carnival Cruise Ship Stricken Again

In what has become an all too familiar scenario, another Carnival cruise ship reported engine problems and ended floating aimlessly while passengers onboard no doubt fumed. The latest in a string of high-profile mishaps for the world’s largest cruise company involved its ship Destiny, carrying more than 4,000 passengers and crew. By Wednesday afternoon, technicians had reportedly restored partial power, but only after it had drifted for 27 hours in the Atlantic off the Turks and Caicos Islands. Power to the two electric propulsion motors of the cruise liner Destiny was lost about 1:40 a.m. EST (0640 GMT) Tuesday, leaving the ship adrift about 60 miles (97 km) east of Grand Turk, one of the Atlantic islands that make up the British colony north of Hispaniola, the company said.
