MHI Delivers "Jinryu" Japan's 7th Soryu-Class Submarine
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) delivered the "Jinryu" submarine to the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MOD) today in a ceremony held at the MHI Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works' No.3 pier in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The Jinryu is the seventh Soryu-class submarine supplied to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), and the fourth built by MHI. MHI also built the first Soryu-class submarine, and has produced a total of 26 submarines at the MHI Kobe Shipyard over the last 70 years. The delivery ceremony was attended by a number of MOD officials including State Minister of Defense Kenji Wakamiya, JMSDF Chief of Staff Tomohisa Takei, and Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency Commissioner Hideaki Watanabe.
Japanese Tankship Explosion: One Missing Four Injured
A fuel tanker has exploded in waters off Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan, leaving the captain missing and four crew members badly injured, according to Xinhua. There were eight crew members on board, seven of them have been rescued, reports Xinhua, citing a local fire department source. The missing captain is 64- year-old Masaichi Ando. According to a Coast Guard official, the 988-ton vessel was anchored about two kilometers south of the Himeji Port, which lies 450 kilometers west of Tokyo. It had already unloaded heavy fuel oil at a port, but black smoke was seen billowing from the ship, up to 100-meter high. Source: Xinhua
MHI Forms Company to Manage Machinery and Engine Businesses
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) announced the organization of a company dedicated to the handling of marine machinery and marine diesel engine business as of October 1, 2013. Through this initiative, MHI aims to accelerate its global business development activities and expand market share of MHI technology-based products in the marine machinery and engine sector. The new entity, which will be headquartered in Nagasaki and have business bases in Nagasaki, Kobe, and Tokyo, will handle development, design, marketing, after-sales service, and licensing activities for marine machinery and diesel engines. Marine related procurement and manufacturing will continue to be handled by MHI and partner companies.

The new entity, which will be headquartered in Nagasaki and have business bases in Nagasaki, Kobe, and Tokyo, will handle development, design, marketing, after-sales service, and licensing activities for marine machinery and diesel engines. Marine related procurement and manufacturing will continue to be handled by MHI and partner companies. In addition to business development in Japan, the new company will aggressively promote licensing to overseas companies and the establishment of joint ventures in Korea, China, and other markets.
MHI Completes Full-scale Marine Diesel Testing Facility

(MHI) has completed "4UE-X3," a testing facility for full-scale low-speed, 2-stroke marine diesel engines, in the company's Kobe Shipyard and Machinery Works in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The facility will be used for testing of various technologies to respond to stringent environmental regulations that are expected to be applied to the shipping industry in the future. First Solar-Power-Assisted Vessel in Development
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Yasumi Kudo), Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI; head office: Kobe-shi, Hyogo Prefecture; president: Satoshi Hasegawa), the Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Yutaka Yasunaga), and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; chairman and president: Noboru Ueda) are to begin in June shipboard tests to verify the effects of a jointly developed hybrid power supply system for vessels.
