Americas Cup Innovation & a Carbon-Free Shipping Future

The Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) represented by BMW Oracle Racing and the Société Nautique de Genève (SNG), the Americas Cup defending champion, represented by Team Alinghi were entwined in a 2.5-year legal battle over multiple court cases, including hearings in the New York Supreme Court and the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, prior to the 33rd edition of the race, due to take place in 2010.The parties disagreed about the location, format, and restrictions on boat design, all of which were changed by the courts prior to the race.

Innovation for Sustainable Transport

A UN conference has highlighted the importance of technology and innovation in ensuring sustainable transport for all. International Maritime Organization (IMO)  was present at the UN’s first ever Global Sustainable Transport Conference, held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan (26-27 November). Concluding the two-day conference with the so-called ‘Ashgabat Statement’, participants stressed the need to promote the integration of science, technology and innovation into sustainable transport systems by tapping into technological opportunities in the decades to come, in order to bring about fundamental, transformative changes to transport systems.

Veson Nautical Adds 42 Clients

Veson Nautical, a  provider of commercial maritime software and services, has announced that despite challenging times in the shipping industry, the company has added 42 new clients from around the globe over the past 18 months. Twenty of the new clients are from the wet and gas segments, including shipping notables such as BW Maritime Pte Ltd, Dorian LPG (USA) LLC, ENGIE (formerly GDF Suez Energy Management Trading), Hoegh LNG, and PetroChina International (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Nineteen new clients include well-known dry bulk companies such as Nova Marine Carriers SA, South32 Marketing Pte Ltd and Western Bulk ASA. Trafigura Pte Ltd is one of three new clients that manage a mix of dry and wet business.

Green-ship Certification Center Opens in Korea

Announced in 2012 as the world’s first green-ship equipment certification center, The Korean Register – an IACS member class society, and founding partner in the project –announced that the center has opened for business earlier this month in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, Korea. Costing a total of $29.4 million (30 billion won), the new center will test, evaluate and certify green-ship equipment. Agent-Operator Collaboration Brought into Veslink

Veson Nautical announced the release of the Veslink Agent Portal, a new feature of Veslink, Veson Nautical’s online service that streamlines the collection and distribution of mission-critical maritime data. The Veslink Agent Portal enables port agents to submit Statements of Facts and Port Disbursements against nominated port calls. These standardized forms flow directly into Veslink for approval by voyage operators, and can then be imported into the Integrated Maritime Operations System (IMOS) to drive further workflows.

Heeding the call to join “An Ocean in Common,” authors flooded the Oceans ‘13 MTS/IEEE San Diego technical program committee with a record number of abstracts in a single day. Special topics include an Ultra-deep track discussing current and prospective robotic technologies, plus a panel of scientists to consider research questions. Oceans2013 Chair Bob Wernli, and Co-Chair Kevin Hardy, developer of the unmanned landers for James Cameron’s DeepSea Challenge Expedition, will be the session conveners. “James’ intention is to be certain the door remains open to other explorers,” Hardy said.

Wärtsilä to Supply Propulsion for Containerships

The environmental sustainability and reduced operating costs of Wärtsilä's integrated propulsion solution were major factors in the winning of these orders. Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to supply the engines and propulsion equipment for six new Ro-Ro container vessels being built for NSCSA, the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia. The ships are being built at the MIPO shipyard in South Korea, and when launched will be operated by Mideast Ship Management Ltd, a subsidiary company of NSCSA.

SAMI Welcomes IMO Progress on Ship Security

The Security Association for the Maritime Industry (SAMI) welcomes the IMO’s progress on its revised guidance and recommendations for the use of privately contracted armed security on-board ships. Following last week’s Intersessional Maritime and Piracy Working Group, the IMO has released new guidance and recommendations on the use of privately contracted armed   security personnel. SAMI believes the new guidance and recommendations are timely, as violent pirate attacks are set to reach record levels as they resume after the lull during the monsoon period and a reduction in scale and operation of the world’s navies. There has also been praise for the work undertaken by the IMO on facilitating the passage of armed guards and their weapons on merchant ships.

Wärtsilä's Tier III Gas Engines for Large LNG Carrier

Wärtsilä has been selected to supply its flexible gas propulsion solution for a series of new LNG carriers to be built at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea. The selection of Wärtsilä gas engines is indicative of the current emphasis by owners on the latest technology, and a growing environmental commitment to reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions. By installing the Wärtsilä 50DF engines, the ships will be capable of meeting the IMOs strict Tier III emission requirements.
