Duisburg to Open New Trimodal Terminal

The largest trimodal  container terminal in the European hinterland is being developed in the Port of Duisburg.Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) is set to build a US$111.2mln  new 220,000 m² trimodal container terminal on the site of its current coal island in response to a sharp decline in coal handling as a result of the energy transformation.The trimodal terminal is to be developed with duisport’s intermodal partners COSCO Shipping Logistics, Hupac SA and HTS Group and aims to handle the port’s booming trade with China in particular.This is duisport's response to the sharp decline in coal handling resulting from the energy transformation. In the future, duisport will instead use the coal island in particular to handle the booming trade with China.

Maersk, Hamburg Süd Improves Asia-Europe Services

While Maersk Line relaunched Asia-Europe Network to increase schedule reliability, Hamburg Süd upgraded schedule reliability in Asia – Europe/Mediterranean network. Maersk Line announced changes to its services connecting Asia and Europe to focus on improving the reliability of the world’s most comprehensive Asia-Europe network. Enhancements address customers’ needs for stable and efficient services and allow for competitive coverage of ports and main markets in both Asia and Europe. “We are pleased to provide our customers with this revised network, which will offer them a higher level of cargo arrival reliability”, comments Johan Sigsgaard, Maersk Line’s Head of Europe Trade.

Hyundai Merchant Marine to Join 2M Alliance

South Korean shipper Hyundai Merchant Marine Co Ltd said on Thursday that it had signed a preliminary deal to join a 2M vessel-sharing alliance of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), the world's two largest container shippers. The deal with the "2M carriers," which would take effect in April 2017, would enable the South Korean firm to strengthen its service offering and achieve improved cost competitiveness, the company said in a statement. Container Shipping Consolidation “A Route to Survival”: Drewry

In a new white paper, Consolidation in the liner industry, Drewry  consider the merits, and pitfalls, of M&A activity within container shipping, but cautioned that strategy needs to be carefully through through. Container shipping remains remarkably fragmented, with the top five operators accounting for less than half the global market. This presents considerable opportunity for further consolidation. Until recently, the industry had experienced a 10-year lull of M&A activity following a flurry of takeovers in the early 2000s. Yet in the past 12 months four major deals have taken place involving several major shipping lines which have led people to question whether this presages a new trend of further industry consolidation.

Tug Company Goes Full Steam with Cloud Computing

Venyu, a company in business continuity, cloud-based virtualization, and battle-tested data recovery, announced that E.N. BISSO has expanded its VenyuCloud, cloud computing and virtualization platform. E.N. BISSO, a provider of harbor and tug towing services for the Gulf Coast, is improving operations with flexible cloud hosting, improved network availability and enhanced IT support, Venyu said. E.N. BISSO supported its fleet of 15 vessels for docking and undocking of oceangoing vessels and barge combination units via a small data center in its main location, linked to a small branch office.

Containership Operators Respond to Market Decline, Form Alliance

Maersk Line, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. and CMA CGM have in principle agreed to establish a long-term operational alliance on East – West trades, called the P3 Network. The aim is to improve and optimise operations and service offerings. The P3 Network will operate a capacity of 2.6 million TEU (initially 255 vessels on 29 loops) on three trade lanes: Asia – Europe, Trans-Pacific and Trans-Atlantic. Transas Updates Ship Security Alert System

Transas Marine launched its latest ship security alert system ShipGuard 4 SSAS, utilizing the SkyWaveIsatData Pro transceiver. The IsatDataPro(IDP) series operates on the Inmarsat I-4 constellation which provides improved network speed. Polling request and response times now takes 30-45 seconds, which Transas says is four times faster than its predecessor. Transas ShipGuard 4 SSAS is type-approved by Germanischer Lloyd and provides regulatory SSAS functionality. It includes modem / GPS receiver, two alert activation circuits and on-board OFF/ON/TEST key switch.
