14 CEZs to Come Up in India Under Sagarmala
The Government has identified fourteen Coastal Economic Zones (CEZ) along the coastline of the country under National Perspective Plan (NPP) of Sagarmala Programme. The CEZ are spatial economic regions spread over multiple coastal districts with strong port linkage. Within each CEZ, there could be multiple industrial clusters that could contain industrial units with requisite support infrastructure. In the state of Gujarat there will be three CEZs - (1) Kandla-Mundra, (2) Pipavav-Sikka and (3)Dahej-Hazira. Adani Mulls Take Over of Katupalli Port
India's Adani Group is likely to take over the operational and management control of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Kattupalli International Container Terminal near Chennai, reports Business Standard. Adani is in the final stage of getting into an arrangement with L&T to take over the terminal, which the Mumbai-based construction and engineering major built at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore ($645 million). It is learnt that the AP Moller–Maersk Group, a Danish business conglomerate, is also in the race to acquire the container terminal operations of the Katupalli port. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd is evaluating the option of taking over the operation and maintenance of other ports too. Also on its radar are ports in Gangavaram, Andhra Pradesh, and Karaikal, Puducherry.
India, Sri Lanka Exchange Fishermen at Maritime Border
Sri Lanka and India exchanged the fishermen who were detained in each other's jails for trespassing into their territorial waters. A total of 15 Indian fishermen, who were in the custody of Sri Lankan authorities, reached Karaikal, while Indian Coast Guard handed over 10 Lankan fishermen and two of their boats to the Island's Coast Guard. According to an official release, Coast Guard ship ICGS Rajdhwaj received the Indian fishermen from Lankan authorities near the Indo Lankan Maritime Boundary Line and handed them over to fisheries officials at Karaikal. The ship also handed over 10 Lankan fishermen and their two boats, which were released from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.
Indian Maritime University Opens New Campus
Union Minister for Shipping Shri G K Vasan yesterday inaugurated the Karaikal campus of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in the Union Territory of Puducherry. To fulfill the aspirations of the youth in maritime training, education and career building, the Union government opened IMU campuses in all of the country’s maritime states. The government has already opened campuses of the University at Kandla and Cochin. A feasibility study conducted by the Ministry of Shipping concluded that new campus at Karaikal would benefit the rural youth to pursue a career in the maritime field. Speaking at the occasion, the Minister told that the efforts of the government as set out in the Maritime agenda 2020 has made the country a major supplier of the most efficient and cost effective manpower.
Indian Port Set to Develop Mega-container Terminal
Container ship traffic: Chennai Port in SE India is going all out to regain top position. Work on the Chennai Port Mega Terminal Project is expected to start shortly and the first ship would be berthed in three years at the new terminal, according to Atulya Misra, Chairman of Chennai Port Trust. He dismissed fears that with the development of Ennore and Karaikal ports that flank the Chennai Port, the latter may lose its pre-eminent position in the region. Mr.Misra told a news conference that Chennai Port was aiming to regain its dominant position in container traffic by establishing a mega container terminal with a capacity to handle 4 million tonnes of cargo.
Cutter Suction Dredger Delivered to Marg Constructions
Marg Constructions Ltd. has announced the arrival of its acquisition - A Cutter Suction Dredger named MARG Cauvery. MARG Cauvery, with a dredging capacity of 2000 cubm/hour, arrived in India on November 09, 2007 and would be immediately deployed in the dredging works of Karaikal Port which is currently being developed by the Company. MARG Cauvery, a non-propelled cutter suction dredger, would be able to dredge at depths in the range of 5 to 25 m.
