Grandweld to Build Third Crewboat for Khalid Faraj
Grandweld Shipyards secured a repeat order worth $5 million (USD) to build a 42-meter aluminum crewboat for Khalid Faraj Shipping. This is the third order received by Grandweld from Khalid Faraj over the last five months. The contract signing took place at Middle East Workboats Conference and Exhibition held in Abu Dhabi on October 1, 2013. Jamal Abki, general manager if Grandweld Shipyards, explained, the 42-meter fast aluminum boat is based on Grandweld’s existing design. The vessel is capable of reaching speeds upwards of 26 knots.
Middle East Expo Sees More Deals Struck
After a record-breaking opening day at the Middle East Workboats & Offshore Marine 2013, when six new contracts were signed on site, more were to follow, including a crew boat construction order for Grandweld. Abu Dhabi Ship Building Expands Facilities
Abu Dhabi Ship Building has announced that it is stepping up its focus on maintenance, repairs and overhauling services, which has been one of the fastest-growing business divisions of the company. Abu Dhabi Ship Building is currently showcasing its advanced MRO capabilities at the Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition & Conference (DIMDEX), the only specialized maritime defense exhibition in the Middle East, being held from March 26 to 28, 2012, at the Qatar National Convention Centre. Each year, Abu Dhabi Ship Building handles approximately 300 repair and upgrade projects for vessels like tugs, barges, landing craft, dredgers, work boats, crew boats, diving vessels, supply and safety vessels and anchor handling tug boats.
Offshore Marine Support Sector Upbeat
In only its second year, the Middle East Workboats 2009 exhibition and conference concluded with a 70% increase in the number of exhibitors and a 60% increase in exhibition space compared with the previous event. “The offshore marine support industry is upbeat about the future in this region and there can be no more powerful sign of the continuing development of the sector than the participation in this show of so many regional and international players,” said Christopher Hayman…
Workboats Exhibition and Conference Opens
The region’s premier maritime event for specialized vessels opening Monday, 5 October 2009, is shrugging off the impact of the economic downturn with a 70% increase in the number of exhibitors and a 60% increase in exhibition space compared with last year, according to the organizers. Workboats include tugs, ferries, supply vessels; police, fire, patrol, pilot, rescue and oil spill boats; along with, dredgers, barges and floating cranes. More than 2,000 such vessels are estimated to be docked or repaired in the Middle East.
Piracy Expected to Rise as Monsoons End
Operators of vessels off the East coast of Africa are being warned by a leading insurance expert to prepare for an increase in pirate attacks after the southwestern monsoon ends in coming weeks. “There is a temporary lull in pirate activity at the moment off the East coast of Africa…but we expect this to be just that - a temporary lull,” said William Tobin, of the not-for-profit mutual organization Shipowners’ Protection Ltd., and a leading speaker at an upcoming regional maritime conference in Abu Dhabi. “When weather conditions improve we expect an increase in activity over and above what we have witnessed in the recent past,” he added. “The lack of any law and order, particularly in Somalia, continues to deteriorate.” The southwestern summer monsoons occur from June through September.
