US, Iraq, Kuwait Complete Trilateral Exercise
The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard completed a trilateral exercise with Iraqi navy and Kuwaiti navy partners in the Northern Arabian Gulf, August 15.The exercise focused on improving collective proficiency in maritime security tactics between the three nations and ensuring the freedom of navigation throughout the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. Participants included the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), U.S. coastal patrol ships USS Tempest (PC 2) and USS Chinook (PC 9), U.S. Coast Guard Island-class patrol boat USCGC Monomoy (WPB 1326), Iraqi navy patrol boat P 303, and Kuwaiti navy patrol boat KNS Al-Garoh (P 3725). The Sullivans led command and control of each event throughout the exercise.
Maritime Security Conference Underway in Abu Dhabi
As policy leaders wrapped up the Manama Dialog, an international security conference in Bahrain, maritime and naval leaders commenced their meetings in Abu Dhabi to discuss practical implementation of those policies and improving abilities of nations and partners to meet growing challenges to maritime security, safety and sovereignty. The IQPC Offshore Patrol Vessel conference at the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi is being attended by naval, coast guard, security, and other maritime and military professionals.
Crowley Trains Kuwaiti Navy on the Z-Drive Technology
A Crowley Maritime Corporation team recently trained seven Kuwaiti Navy mariners in operations aboard the first of two newly built Z-Drive harbor tugs the navy will take delivery of this year. The 30-day training session was designed to help the mariners learn how to operate the new boat safely while maximizing its features and performance. The two 67-ft Z-Drive tugs were ordered by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and are being built by Rozema Boat Works, Inc., of Mt. Vernon, Wash. The first tug, Warjiya, was completed in April and the second tug is scheduled for delivery in Sept.
MTU Detroit Diesel Wins Kuwaiti Navy Contract
MTU Detroit Diesel, Inc., Detroit, Mich., is being awarded a $30,546,032 firm-fixed-price contract for Kuwaiti Navy fast interceptor boat propulsion systems packages under the Foreign Military Sales Program.Work will be performed in Detroit, Mich. (25 percent); Sweden and Germany (25 percent); and Gulfport, Miss. (50 percent), and work is expected to be completed by December 2009. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
