MRS 2022: Supply Chain Challenges to the Maritime Transportation System
Inland maritime transportation systems (MTS) play major roles in domestic and international supply chains, with unique challenges related to upstream and downstream sources disruption, accessibility and shifts in commodities, as well as demand and supply imbalances. With a 20% on-time arrival statistic, the U.S. east coast serves as an example for the increasing appeal of inland waterways as a cost-effective, alternative, with Port of Cleveland traffic reportedly increasing 70% between 2020 and 2021.
One Small Step toward Sustainable Coastal Shipping
Short sea shipping is alive and well on America’s East Coast. In the United States, counties and states directly on the shoreline constitute less than 10 percent of the total land area (not including Alaska), but account for 39 percent of the total population. From 1970 to 2010, the population of these counties increased by almost 40 percent and are projected to increase by an additional 10 million people or 8 percent by 2020. Coastal areas are substantially more crowded than the U.S. as a whole, and population density in coastal areas will continue to increase in the future.
“Bright Ideas” program - Ash Center - Harvard University
The Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, recognized the Port of Houston Partners in Maritime Education as part of the 2015 Bright Ideas program. This year's cohort includes 124 programs from all levels of government--school districts; county, city, state, and federal agencies; as well as public-private partnerships--that are at the forefront in innovative government action. Since 2009, the Port of Houston Authority has been tackling the growing need for skilled maritime workers by organizing maritime academies at four area school districts at the high school level to introduce youth to maritime transportation systems and career pathways as mariners, and in shipbuilding and repair, and port operations.
White House Releases National Maritime Domain Awareness Plan
Statement by NSC Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on the National Maritime Domain Awareness Plan emphasizes the importance of maritime security in the global supply chain. Hayden said recently in a prepard statement, "The White House has released the National Maritime Domain Awareness Plan. This plan promotes global maritime security and prosperity through improved governance to support the effective understanding of the maritime domain. CFOA Showcases Ferry Sector’s Role in Canadian Economy
Today marked the conclusion of the Canadian Ferry Operators Association (CFOA) annual AGM and Conference in St. John’s, NL. The theme of CFOA 2013 was Innovative Approaches to Customer Relations, and the two-day conference featured presentations on enhancing customer relations, informative technical sessions as well as a trade show with exhibits from some of the world’s leading ferry sector suppliers. “CFOA 2013 was an unqualified success,” said Serge Buy, CEO of CFOA. CFOA 2013 also featured the release of a report highlighting the socio-economic importance of the ferry sector in Canada, as well as addresses by the Hon. Paul Davis, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Transportation and Works, and the Hon. Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).
DHS Release Maritime Infrastructure Recovery Plan
The US Department of Homeland Security released the 63-page Maritime Infrastructure Recovery Plan. The plan provides a standardized procedure for restoration of maritime transportation systems following an incident of national significance. Michael Carthew, President, Chevron Texaco Shipping and Dean Taylor, President and CEO, Tidewater Marine were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following yesterday's Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. General Dynamics announced the appointment of John F. "Dugan" Shipway, 60, as president of Bath Iron Works, reporting to Michael W. Toner, executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group. Shipway succeeds Allan C. Cameron, 57, who has announced his retirement. Cameron had been president of Bath Iron Works since 1996. Edwin W. Stephan, a founder and former longtime president and vice chairman of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., will retire from the Board of Directors following the company's May 20 annual meeting in Miami.
Jamian Named Deputy MARAD Administrator
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta today announced the appointment of John Jamian as the Deputy Administrator for the Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. “John brings a wealth of experience to the Department. His leadership and team building skills will be invaluable in achieving the department’s strategic goals, and will prove to be important assets as we meet the challenge of improving our nation’s maritime transportation systems,” said Secretary Mineta. Jamian has extensive experience in the maritime industry and international transportation and trade development. During his tenure as a Michigan legislator, which began in 1991, he served as Chairman of the House Task Force Committee on Port and Maritime Affairs.
