Japan Sending Team to Mauritius to Investigate Wakashio Grounding

Japan said on Friday it will send a five-person team to Mauritius to investigate the grounding of a Japanese-owned ship off the country's coast that led to an environmental crisis.A bulk carrier owned by Japan's Nagashiki Shipping and chartered by Mitsui OSK ran aground on a reef off Mauritius on July 25 and later began leaking oil into the pristine waters around the Indian Ocean island.The Japanese government said in a statement that it would send a team of five people to Mauritius on Sept.

MOL to Spend $9.4 Mln on Mauritius Oil Spill Clean-up

India's GSL Delivers Patrol Vessel to Mauritius

Indo-Mauritian maritime defence Co-operation got another fillip with the delivery of first Fast Patrol Vessel, MCGS VICTORY, designed and built in-house by Goa Shipyard Limited(GSL) for Mauritius Coast Guard, on 26th September 2016 at GSL. The vessel is primarily designed for Coastal Patrolling, Anti-piracy, Anti-smuggling, Anti-drug Surveillance, Anti-poaching Operations, and Search and Rescue Operations. The vessel is 50 meter long, fitted with 30 mm CRN-91 Gun, 12.7 mm HMGs & 7.62 mm MMGs besides state-of-the-art Navigation and Communication equipment and is capable of achieving a high speed of 35 knots. Significantly, trials were undertaken in peak monsoon months and the vessel achieved all design parameters. The ship was ceremonially handed over by RAdm.

Sri Lankan Minister Visits Goa Shipyard

Sri Lanka's Minister of State for Defence Ruwan Wijewardene  visited the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) at the Vasco town, located around 40 kms from Panaji in India and inspected Sri Lankan ships under construction, the Press Trust of India reported. He inspected the progress of the two Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) being built for Sri Lanka Navy at Goa Shipyards. Wijewardene held discussion with GSL Chairman and Managing Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital  along with the shipyard officials on the progress of the ship building process. They also visited an almost completed similar type AOPV being built for the Indian Coast Guard to see the facilities and equipment fitted on board. The first AOPV is scheduled to join the SLN fleet in August 2017 and the second one year after.

Cutlass Express 2015 Commences

Maritime forces from East Africa, South Africa, Europe, Indian Ocean nations, the United States and several international organizations began the fourth iteration of the multinational maritime Exercise Cutlass Express, Jan. 28, 2015. Exercise Cutlass Express 2015, sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), is designed to improve regional cooperation, maritime domain awareness (MDA) and information-sharing practices to increase capabilities of East African and Indian Ocean nations to counter sea-based illicit activity. The exercise leverages The Djibouti Code of Conduct, which 21 nations are signatory to, as a framework for exercising information-sharing practices and enforcing maritime rule of law at sea.

GSL Builds Fast Attack Crafts for Mauritius

The keel laying ceremony for first of the series of Two Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (WJFAC) being built by GSL for Mauritius Police Force was held at GSL on December 18, 2014. Capt. Anish Nair, Warship Production Superintendent (WPS), Goa did the honors in the presence of Rear Adm. Shekhar Mital, NM, IN (Retd) Chairman and Managing Director, GSL. Senior Officials of GSL were also present on the occasion. The contract for the export order was signed on May 7, 2014 in Port Louis, Mauritius by Mrs. K. O. Fong Weng-Poorun, Senior Chief Executive of the Prime Minister’s Office and Rear Adm.

Halmatic Secures Mauritius Police Order

To satisfy their requirement for 4 heavy duty multi-purpose workboats the Mauritius Police have opted for the RTK Marine 9m Ramped Logistic Support Boat. The workboats are a new commercial derivative of the 9m Combat Support Boat proven in service with the U.K. Ministry of Defense and feature a raised aft-wheelhouse with a ramped well deck. The planing, asymmetrical catamaran hull form is manufactured from GRP and features a high degree of reserve buoyancy to enable the craft to remain afloat when fully swamped. The self-draining well deck features a manually operated bow ramp and is capable of carrying a short wheelbase Land Rover, general cargo or personnel with the modular straddle seating in place.
