Simec Atlantis Energy is set to team up with General Electric (GE) to develop the world's largest tidal stream turbine.According to a press release from Simec, its Atlantis Turbine and Engineering Services (ATES) division will enter into a Technology Partnership and Preferred Supplier Agreement (TPPSA) with GE’s Power Conversion business (GE).Under the terms of the partnership agreement, both parties will work together and share resources for the ongoing development of utility scale tidal energy generation and associated energy storage solutions. Atlantis Chief Joins Ocean Energy
Tim Cornelius, CEO of global tidal developer Atlantis Resources has taken a seat on the Board of Directors of Ocean Energy Europe – the industry group for ocean renewable energy – by becoming a Lead Sponsor of the organisation. The move reflects Atlantis’ position as a leading developer of commercial tidal power projects and underpins its commitment to driving the market for ocean renewable energy. Following its acquisition of pioneering tidal company Marine Current Turbines earlier this year, Atlantis Resources now owns one of the largest and most diverse portfolios in the business, with a project pipeline of 600MW. This portfolio includes the 398MW MeyGen project, the world’s largest planned tidal stream array which is currently under construction in the Pentland Firth, Scotland.

Scotland Site for World's Biggest Tidal Array
The world’s biggest tidal array is to be built in North Scotland bringing jobs and energy security to the Pentland Firth region, informs a UK Government news release. The Government has provided £10 million worth of grant funding to the Meygen project, which will provide enough electricity to power 175,000 homes and provide up to 100 jobs when fully completed. Other funders include the Scottish Government, and The Crown Estate. The £51m scheme could inspire further projects in the Pentland Firth - helping to provide clean, sustainable and secure energy and jobs for the local community for decades to come. “The project also shows what can be done when the UK and Scottish Governments work together to provide a lasting benefit for the people of Scotland.
Kongsberg Maritime Wins Contract for Tidal Stream Project
A contract has been awarded to Kongsberg Maritime Ltd. to conduct underwater noise studies for an offshore renewables project which could eventually lead to 400MW being installed in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth. The contract, awarded by MeyGen Limited, will involve Kongsberg Maritime Ltd. conducting both baseline and operational noise measurements from prototype tidal devices to assess the potential effects of underwater noise on marine life. “This is a major contract for Kongsberg Maritime Ltd., as the MeyGen Tidal Stream Project is one of the most significant tidal initiatives in Europe,” said David Shand, General Manager Offshore at Kongsberg Maritime Ltd.
