BAE San Francisco Wins Navy Contract

BAE Systems San Francisco Ship Repair, San Francisco, Calif., is being awarded a $12,257,163 firm-fixed-price contract for a 55-calendar day regular overhaul and dry-docking of Military Sealift Command's dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Alan Shepard. Some of the major work items include dry-docking and undocking the ship, repairing interior decks, structural repairs, overhauling the main diesel generators, and inspecting and refurbishing the propeller shaft and stern tube. The ship's primary mission is to provide fuel, ammunition, and dry and refrigerated stores to support Navy ships at sea, enabling them to remain underway for extended periods. This contract includes options, which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $14,321,064.

Toledo Maritime Academy Launches Cruise & BST Training

Cruise Ship Professional Development and STCW Basic Safety Training Begins Monday. Military Sealift Command Reorganizes

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command today announced an organization re-alignment designed to increase efficiency while maintaining effectiveness. MSC is implementing the plan to realign three core aspects of the Washington, D.C.,-based command's shore side operations: the roles of three of the command's Senior Executive Service personnel, the number and structure of programs that conduct the command's seagoing missions, and the reporting structure of several field activities. Detyens Wins $7.9m MSC Contract

Detyens Shipyard, Inc., North Charleston, S.C., is being awarded a $7,908,907 firm-fixed-price contract for a 55-calendar day regular overhaul/dry-docking of Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Big Horn. This shipyard availability is primarily for ship maintenance and repairs. Work will include cargo and ballast tank preservation; 54,000-hour engine maintenance; main engine clutch and coupling overhaul; cargo console cable replacement; cargo console system mechanical repair; gyro system replacement; fathometer replacement; and cleaning and painting of the underwater hull. Big Horn's primary mission is to provide fuel to Navy ships at sea and jet fuel for aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers.

Maritime Foundation Names New Director

Lt. Commander Daniel Kleiboemer.

Commander Daniel Kleiboemer has been named the Director of The Maritime Foundation and is expected to oversee course development and curriculum for several maritime adult job training programs as well as recertification programs for those already in the maritime industry. New Navy Contracts

General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, is being awarded a $27,056,613 cost-plus-fixed fee modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-2303) to exercise an option for additional class services associated with the detail design and construction of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyer. This work will provide technical and industrial engineering in the interpretation and application of the detailed design to support construction and the maintenance of the ship design. Work will be performed in Bath, Maine, and is expected to be completed by December 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

New Navy Contract

Atlantic Marine Philadelphia, LLC, Philadelphia, Pa., is being awarded a $12,771,174 firm-fixed-price contract for a 70-calendar day regular overhaul of Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Joshua Humphreys. The ship's primary mission is to provide fuel to Navy ships at sea and jet fuel to aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers. Humphreys, which deactivated and joined the Navy's Inactive Ships program in 1996, is being reactivated this summer by the direction of U.S. Fleet Forces Command to support counter-piracy and global war on terrorism operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations where the ship will serve as a duty oiler to U.S. and coalition warships.

The ship's primary mission is to provide fuel to Navy ships at sea and jet fuel to aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers. Work performed will include preservation of ballast tanks; preservation of tank deck overhead; preservation of potable water tanks and main engine turbo overhaul. This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $7,757,269. Work will be performed in North Charleston, S.C., and is expected to be completed by April 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

BAE Receives Grant

BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $8,685,509 firm-fixed-price contract for a 55-calendar-day regular overhaul of Military Sealift Command's fast combat support ship USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8). The ship's primary mission is to operate as part of a carrier strike group, providing fuel, ammunition, and dry and refrigerated stores to support U.S. Navy ships at sea. This regular overhaul includes cleaning and inspecting tanks and spaces, underwater hull-cleaning and painting, and numerous inspections and certifications. The contract contains options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $11,684,396. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va., and the period of performance is for 55 calendar days, commencing on about Aug.1, 2009.

Mariners Receive Navy League Awards

Two Military Sealift Command civil service mariners - Boatswain Khalid Muhammad and 1st Assistant Engineer Theodore "Scotty" Robinson - were among 18 military and civilian members of the U.S. sea services honored Oct. 31 at the annual Navy League Sea Services Awards ceremony, held this year in Kansas City, Mo. Muhammad received the Able Seaman Oscar Chappell Award for Outstanding Maritime Stewardship for saving the life of a shipmate who suffered a medical emergency. When roused in the middle of the night by a loud crash coming from an adjoining stateroom, Muhammad immediately contacted bridge personnel to inform them of a potential medical emergency. Muhammad then obtained a key, entered the room and found a fellow mariner on the floor suffering convulsions.

Guam Shipyard Awarded $11.5m Contract

Guam Shipyard, Santa Rita, , is being awarded a $11.5m firm-fixed-price contract for a 55-calendar-day regular overhaul of Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS John Ericsson (T-AO 194). Ericsson is one of Military Sealift Command's 14 fleet replenishment oilers that provide underway replenishment of fuel to Navy combat ships at sea. Cascade General Wins $9m Contract

Cascade General Portland Shipyard, Portland, Ore., is being awarded a $9,052,654 firm-fixed-price contract for a 70-day post shipyard availability (PSA) of Military Sealift Fleet Support Command's dry cargo/ammunition ship USNS Alan Shepard to undergo a number of modifications that could not be economically accomplished under the ship construction contract. Naval Sea Systems PMS 325 provided funding for the alterations to be completed during the PSA. The ship’s primary mission is to operate as part of a carrier strike group, providing fuel, ammunition, and dry and refrigerated stores to support U.S. Navy ships at sea. BAE Systems won a contract by the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Fleet Support Command for a 60-day overhaul of the fast combat support ship USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8). The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of the work package to $7.9 million. All work on the Military Sealift Command ship will be performed at BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair starting in July and is expected to be completed in September 2007. Keel-Laying of Third T-AKE Ship

U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Carol M. Pottenger, Commander, Military Sealift Fleet Support Command, was the honoree for the keel-laying event, welding her initials into the keel of the T-AKE 3, the USNS Alan Shepard. With her are Dave Morton, Program Manager, Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force Program (L) and Art Diaz, MSC Ship Construction Senior Owners Representative. General Dynamics NASSCO on February 14, 2006, held the keel-laying ceremony for USNS Alan Shepard, the third ship in the U.S. Navy’s T-AKE program. Designated the Lewis and Clark class, the new T-AKE ships fulfill combat logistics force requirements. The keel-laying ceremony is a NASSCO tradition, signifying an important milestone as a new ship begins to take shape on the company’s building ways.

BAE Systems Wins Contract for Work on USNS Bridge

BAE Systems announced the award of a $3.8m contract to its San Diego shipyard by Military Sealift Fleet Support Command (MSFSC). The contract for the USNS BRIDGE (T-AOE 10) Mid-Term Availability (MTA) is scheduled to be performed this summer. If all options are exercised by MSFSC, the contract could exceed $4.8 million. The 754-foot long USNS BRIDGE, one of four Fast Combat Support Ships, carries a crew of 160 civilians and 28 Sailors. These support ships are Military Sealift Command's largest combat logistics vessels and are part of the 36-ship Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force. The ships carry oil, ammunition and dry and refrigerated stores and are capable of rapidly replenishing Navy carrier strike groups.
