Two Ships Aground Near Novorossiisk
Twp foreign motor ships, which are in distress in the Tsemesskaya bay, could not get afloat from banks after a strong gale pushed the Barcelona and Ibragim-R motor ships closer to the shore. The Barcelon,a with a displacement of 6,000 tonnes and at 116 meters long, is now in the area of Cape Doob, while the Ibragim-R, with a displacement of 6,500 tonnes and at 105 meters long, is in the area of Kabardinka. According to Itar Tassa, the Novorossiisk port has not received requests for assistance from the motor ships. A total of 43 crewmembers remain on the ships. The continuing strong gale with gusts of up to 18 meters per second interferes with evacuating people and inspecting the state of the ships’ bottoms. The motor ships are without cargoes.

Ship Distressed in Sea of Japan
Reports indicate that Motor ship Diana that sent distress signals from the Sea of Japan has about 4,000 tons of cargo aboard. The ship, which flies the Cambodian flag and has an 18-strong Russian crew, has scrap metal in the holds and timber on the deck. The piles of timber have shifted and are partly hanging overboard, said Konstantin Sviridov, the chief of Maritime Salvage and Coordination Center in Vladivostok. The Diana called out of the port of Vanino in Khabarovsk territory Sunday and headed for Japan, but in the small hours of Wednesday it sent a distress signal and turned towards the major Russian commercial port of Nakhodka, not far from Vladivostok.
Grove Crane for Chauncy Maples Project
The 'Chauncy Maples' project aims to bring health care to Lake Malawi's poor by renovating Africa's oldest motor ship. The charitable trust announce the purchase of a reconditioned Grove crane with 25 ton lifting capacity to lift the engine, generators, fuel and freshwater tanks into the hull. It will soon be on its way to Monkey Bay from Durban. Ross Girdler, the project manager, conveys his thanks to the Ministry of Finance and Malawi Revenue Authority for all their help and support now that essential goods and equipment are starting to be shipped into Malawi, exempt from duty and taxes.

Hyundai Glovis Bags $1.3bln Contract
Hyundai Glovis, a logistics company headquartered in Seoul and part of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, has secured 1.42 trillion won (US$1.3 billion) in orders to ship vehicles, said a report in RTT News. The auto freight unit of South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group quoted as saying that the orders are to ship vehicles built by Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp. The report said that, under the two separate deals, Hyundai Glovis said it is set to ship Hyundai and Kia cars to the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia until December 2019.

AMSC Gets $13.3M Amendment from ONR
American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:AMSC) has finalized an additional contract amendment with the United States Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR). Under the terms of the amendment, the ONR has approved a $13.3 million increase to AMSC's contract for the design, manufacture and shipment of a factory-tested 36.5-megawatt (MW) (49,000 horsepower) high temperature superconductor (HTS) propulsion motor for electric warships. The amendment adds $13.3 million to AMSC's backlog, all of which is expected to be recognized as revenue by the end of calendar 2006. AMSC expects to deliver the 36.5-MW motor to the Navy test facility in Philadelphia in September 2006.
AMSC Completes Factory Acceptance Testing of Propulsion Motor for Navy
American Superconductor Corporation and its partner, Northrop Grumman announced the completion of factory acceptance testing for the world's first 36.5 megawatt (49,000 horsepower) high temperature superconductor (HTS) ship propulsion motor at Northrop Grumman's facility at the Philadelphia Naval Business Center. This is the final milestone before the Navy takes possession of the motor. The motor was designed, developed and manufactured under a contract from the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR) to demonstrate the efficacy of HTS primary- propulsion-motor technology for future Navy all-electric ships and submarines. The power and torque of this HTS motor is comparable to the requirements for the Navy's new Zumwalt class of destroyers, known as DDG 1000.
