Marine News' Top Vessels of 2022

The November edition of Marine News magazine highlighted the most notable newbuilds delivered in 2022. From sturdy and nimble workboats, to the first new Jones Act laker in a generation, each vessel on display showcases the industry’s engineering prowess and technological ingenuity, with the focus on improving efficiency in operations. Converted Oil Spill Response Vessel Delivered to Sandy Hook Pilots

A vessel that formerly operated as an oil spill response vessel has been converted to a pilot station vessel and delivered to the United New York & New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Association.The conversion work was performed by Feeney Shipyard of Kingston, N.Y., and design and engineering work for the project was led by JMS Naval Architects, of Mystic, Conn. Oil Spill Response Vessel Converted Into a Pilot Station

JMS Naval Architects informs conversion work is nearly completed of the former oil spill response vessel OSRV Maine Responder to a pilot station vessel for Sandy Hook Pilots Association of Staten Island, N.Y. The conversion work contract was competitively awarded to Feeney Shipyard of Kingston, N.Y.The Sandy Hook pilots have been piloting ships in the New York harbor for more than 300 years. They operate a pilot station boat by Ambrose Light year-round and in all weather conditions.

Moose Boats Bags Order from Westar Marine

San Francisco Bay boat designer and manufacturer Moose Boats said it has been awarded a contract to construct multiple 75-foot semi-displacement USCG Subchapter-T passenger catamarans for Westar Marine Services in San Francisco, Calif. The first vessel will commence production in the spring of 2017. The aluminum catamarans will be equipped with Twin Volvo D13 turbo diesel engines with Volvo IPS3 drives, achieving a service speed of 25 knots and exceptional close quarters maneuverability.

Ferry Capability is More Than Managing an Asset

Ferry operations are extremely complex with a combination of inputs that will all impact the ferry’s ability to deliver effective operational capability – the asset itself forms only a small part of a system for transporting people and vehicles between two points. All inputs to the ferry transportation system need to be considered to deliver the system’s capability and ensure the service is successful. Too much emphasis is often placed on the acquisition of a ferry, rather than on the remaining operational inputs, resulting in an ineffective, inefficient and unsuccessful operation.

BMT Provides Ferry Design for River Murray

BMT Design & Technology Pty Ltd (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has completed a design project for the South Australian Government’s Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI). Working in partnership with the DPTI, BMT has developed a replacement design for ferries that operate on the River Murray, the third longest navigable river in the world, after the Amazon and Nile. The steel hull, built by local firm Bowhill Engineering, was fit out by the Departments Morgan dockyard.

Pittsburgh Coalition Receives Marine Air Quality Grant

Cutting-edge Demonstration Project on the Rivers. The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) is proud to be participating with Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities (PRCC) and Clean Fuels Clean Rivers (CFCR) to conduct a marine air quality study centered on the conversion of an inland towboat to dual fuel diesel/liquid natural gas (LNG) to reduce diesel emissions in marine vessels. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance Program (META) grant awarded to the CFCR coalition is the first-ever awarded by the federal government specifically targeting the marine community operating in the Nation's inland rivers. The coalition will convert a harbor towboat to burn LNG as its fuel source, monitoring the emissions before and after.

For over 12 years Island Marine Services Pte Ltd (IMS) and subsequently Island Marine Engineering Pte Ltd (IME) have maintained agencies with Sleipner (Side-Power Thrusters), Vestdavit and Headhunter and provided customers in the region and in Europe with naval architecture services and commercial ship servicing. The companies now bring their technical expertise and product range to the corporate portfolio of the AMI Group. The AMI Group has appointed Karl Nilssen, a proprietor of IMS and IME, as general manager of AMI Marine International, to be based out of Singapore.

Boksa Marine Design Supports New Workskiff Projects

BMD provide naval architecture services for two commercial vessels. Boksa Marine Design, Inc. (BMD) has provided hull, structural and outfitting design for two recent Workskiff built boats, a 25’ RIB law enforcement boat and a 31’ RIB salvage and towing vessel. “We’ve been fortunate to partner with Workskiff on these two projects as well as many others over the years. Their boats help clients meet the challenges faced on the water and efficiently operate in all weather conditions,” said Nick Boksa, President of Boksa Marine Design. BMD managed the entire design of both vessels.

All American Marine to Construct Advanced Survey Catamaran

All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) of Bellingham, Wash. and C & C Technologies, Inc. (C & C) of Lafayette, La. announced the commencement of construction of a new catamaran survey vessel. C & C Technologies recently signed a contract with All American Marine to construct a new 134-ft by 37-ft aluminum catamaran for survey operations in the Gulf of Mexico. The two companies have been developing the design concept for the advanced vessel for nearly two years. Teknicraft Design Ltd.
