New England Shipyards Cited for Environmental Violations

Two New England shipyards, one in Massachusetts and one in Rhode Island, will pay penalties to settle claims by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that they violated federal environmental laws. Rose’s Oil Service, a shipyard and fuel oil distributor in Gloucester, Mass., will pay $130,000 to resolve claims it violated federal water and oil pollution prevention laws. Under the settlement agreement between Rose’s Oil and EPA’s New England office, EPA alleges the company discharged pressure wash water and stormwater without authorization under the Clean Water Act. Rose’s Oil also failed to prepare a Facility Response Plan and an adequate Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan in violation of federal oil pollution regulations.

New England Shipbuilding's Fate Hangs on Salvage Budget

The fate of New England's shipbuilding industry and thousands of jobs will depend on a series of top-level discussions that began yesterday at the Defense Department, where Navy officials are scrambling to salvage long-term plans to buy new warships and submarines built at shipyards in Maine and Connecticut. The region narrowly escaped the closure last summer of its two largest naval facilities, in Kittery, Maine, and Groton, Conn., but its multibillion-dollar ship manufacturing sector remains in jeopardy, according to defense officials and lawmakers. The Pentagon is seeking major budget cuts to help reduce the federal deficit and finance the priorities of the war on terrorism -- $7 billion worth next year alone -- and is considering further reductions in the size of the naval fleet…

U.S.-bound LNG Tanker with Russian LNG Diverted

A liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker probably carrying some supply from a Russian export project has been diverted from the United States, ship-tracking data shows. Engie's Gaselys LNG tanker was diverted on Friday from the Everett terminal in Boston, Massachusetts, where gas prices have tapered off since spiking during a cold snap. The vessel picked up the cargo from storage tanks at Britain's Isle of Grain import terminal in early January. The delivery to the United States was unusual because the LNG at Isle of Grain's tanks also contained some supply from Russia's new Yamal export plant.

The largest section of future carrier 'HMS Queen Elizabeth' is now complete & embarks on 1,230 mile barge trip. This gigantic segment - officially known as Lower Block 04 and weighing 11,300 tonnes - was towed on a barge down the Clyde on Sunday to begin a 1,230-nautical-mile (2,278km) journey around the south of England to Rosyth. Originally the shorter route around the north of Scotland had been planned. However, bad weather in the north of the UK forced reconsideration and the route was changed to around the south of England and up to Rosyth through the North Sea.

The People's Shipyard Moves Ahead

When MarineNews last visited Southeastern New England Shipyard (SENESCO) in December 2001, the yard was abuzz with barge construction activity. Upon our return however, almost one year to the day of our last visit, SENESCO, was yet again buzzing, but this time with its newest venture - the inauguration of its own drydock. Located just down the street from the shipyard's main headquarters next to General Dynamics' Electric Boat facility in Quonset Point, R.I. lies the project that SENESCO has been focused on since late last year - a new drydock that will enable the yard to perform barge repair. At the time, of MR/EN's visit in October, the company was guiding the first vessel into the new drydock - a 240-ft. (73.1-m) barge from Boston-based Modern Continental.

News: SENESCO Becomes Senesco Marine

The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation (SENESCO) announced recently that the company formally changed its name to Senesco Marine and instituted a sweeping new design and build process to enhance the speed with which the company can design, build and deliver barges. Gary C. Schuler, who was recently appointed chief executive officer, said that SENESCO has grown beyond its original focus as a Southeastern New England shipbuilding company. "Our most recent double hulled barge was built for a west coast customer and we continue to see increased activity out of our New Orleans office," said Schuler. The change is not as superficial as a name change alone, however, and Schuler touted the company's new partnership with Guarino & Cox, a respected naval architecture firms.

Celebrity Eclipse Makes First Appearance

The third in Celebrity Cruises' $3.7b Solstice Class fleet, Celebrity Eclipse emerged for the first time from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany on Feb. 28. Celebrity Eclipse will enter service April 26 and, following two short break cruises, will offer a series of Canary Islands, Scandinavia/Russia and Spanish Mediterranean sailings roundtrip from Southampton, England. Cassidy Takes Over Head Post At BMI

Baltimore Marine Industries has elected David Cassidy as president and CEO. Cassidy, who succeeds David Watson, who retired, had previously served as president of BethShip, the predecessor to BMI, for 15 years until its sale in 1997. Cassidy holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. degree in fluid mechanics from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in England, and has extensive experience in management and executive positions at shipyards in England, Canada and the U.S.

UK Hopes Navy Deal To Save Navy Jobs

The U.K. Ministry of Defense hopes a new contract with naval shipbuilder Vosper Thornycroft would save 450 workers from the company's planned 650 job cuts announced in December. Vosper Thornycroft is building three offshore patrol vessels at its Southampton, southern England, shipyard for the Royal Navy. The vessels will replace existing ships involved with protecting fishing regulations. "Construction of the vessels is expected to safeguard around 450 jobs at Vosper Thornycroft's Southampton shipyard," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement. A spokesman for Vosper said the contract would be worth around 60 million pounds ($86.03 million) in total. Contract negotiations are expected to be finalized next month.

NSRP Elects New Chair and Vice Chairman

The Environmental Technology Panel of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has elected Jennifer Parker, from Bath Iron Works, as chairman and Frank (“Hogie”) Thorn, from Newport News Shipbuilding, to the position of vice-chairman. Parker replaces Mike Chee, of National Steel & Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), who held the panel’s chairman position for the pervious ten years. Thorn replaces Parker as the panel’s vice chairman. The Environmental Technology Panel of the NSRP provides a forum for shipyard environmental personnel to seek solutions to shipyard environmental problems and promotes the advancement of environmental technology to meet the shipyard’s needs. The panel meets three times a year in various U.S.

UK’s Wight Shipyard to Build Two Fast Ferries

The largest fast passenger ferry order for a U.K. shipyard in over 25 years has been confirmed by MBNA Thames Clippers. Two new 170 capacity passenger boats will be built at the Wight Shipyard Co on the Isle of Wight, and will join London’s growing river transport network in summer 2017. Representing an investment worth over £6.3 million, the order will see the creation of 75 new jobs across the Isle of Wight and London, and the involvement of over 100 businesses in the South of England as part of the delivery supply chain.

The Axe Continues to Swing at Cammell Laird

Insolvent British shipbuilder Cammell Laird Plc is cutting a further 117 staff, a spokesman for its receivers PricewaterhouseCoopers told Reuters on Monday. The spokesman said 34 jobs out of 59 were being shed at its Tyneside operation in northeast England while 83 of 136 jobs were being cut at Birkenhead in northwest England. Cammell Laird went into receivership in April after a series of cancelled orders hit its finances. Earlier this month, the firm, a symbol of the decline in British shipbuilding, announced it was axing 330 jobs on top of more than 600 job cuts made earlier in the year. Last Friday, ship repair outfit A&P Group Holdings bought the plant and equipment of each of Cammell Laird's yards at Birkenhead, Tyneside and at Teeside, also in northeast England.

U.K. Orders Six RoRo Ferries; Four Amphibious Ships

The British government placed much-anticipated contracts for six RoRo ferries with two going to UK yards, and four going to a German shipyard. Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon also announced he would place orders for four amphibious landing ships, split between the Swan Hunter shipyard in North-East England and the Govan yards in Glasgow. Two of the ferries will be built by Belfast's Harland & Wolff yard, which built the ill-fated Titanic and is owned by Norway's Fred Olsen Energy. The others will be built by the Flensburger yard in Germany.
