Dry chemical powder solutions have long safeguarded LNG and LPG cargo vessels, but as the industry embraces liquefied gases as a propulsion fuel, the unique requirements for protecting bunkering stations on a wider range of vessels, such as large cruise ships, containerships, and tankers, is becoming increasingly important. In response to the growing demand for advanced fire safety solutions to support the maritime's energy transition, Survitec has reconfigured and enhanced its Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) fire extinguishing system.

A missing retaining ring and mounting bracket on the port main diesel engine led to an engine-room fire on a towing vessel near Belleview, Ky., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said.Florida Marine Transporters' (FMT) towing vessel Capt. Kirby Dupuis was pushing loaded dry cargo barges on the Ohio River when a fire broke out on its portside engine on November 9, 2021. The crewmembers fought the fire using portable extinguishers and attempted to activate the vessel’s fixed fire-extinguishing system. The fire was eventually extinguished by local firefighters.

IMO: Nitrogen in the Oceans Needs Further Study

Human activity increases the amount of nitrogen that reaches the oceans by 50%, on top of natural processes, according to a new report which assesses the magnitude and impacts of anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen inputs to the ocean. The study by the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP), a United Nations advisory body, provides a new estimate of the extent that human beings are altering the cycling of nitrogen in the oceans. Extra nitrogen is reaching the oceans through rain or dust fall, as a result of fossil fuel burning and intensive agriculture. The natural process of nitrogen fixation is essential for life.

Harley Marine Names Two ATBs

Harley Marine Services has named two articulated tug and barge (ATB) units currently under construction at Gunderson Marine (barges) and Conrad Shipyard (tugs), respectively. The vessels include two 116 foot tugs and two 80,000 barrel barges. The tugs, each being built at Conrad Shipyard of Morgan City, La. are 116 feet long with a beam of 36 feet. Each vessel is equipped with two GE Tier 4 propulsion engines, for a total of approximately 4,560 horsepower, and two John Deere Tier 3 generators. These cutting edge engines reduce NOx and particulate matter. The vessels are each equipped with a Markey tow winch and bow and stern fendering. Built at Gunderson Marine of Portland, Ore., the barges are 430 feet long with a beam of 76 feet with a carrying capacity of 80,000 barrels.

Climate Change Will Forever Alter Key Ocean Microbes

Global warming will irrevocably mutate a micro-organism that plays a crucial role in the ocean food chain, reports a study. Trichodesmium (referred to as “Tricho” for brief by researchers) is likely one of the few organisms within the ocean that may “repair” atmospheric nitrogen fuel, making it out there to different organisms. It’s essential as a result of all life—from algae to whales—wants nitrogen to develop. A brand new research from USC and the Massachusetts-based Woods Gap Oceanographic Establishment (WHOI) exhibits that altering circumstances because of might ship Tricho into overdrive with no strategy to cease—reproducing quicker and producing tons extra nitrogen.

Air Products: Pioneering Gas Processing Solutions

APAS delivered the nitrogen generator for Prelude – the world’s largest floating LNG plant anchored 200 kilometers off of the coast of Australia. “The scope of this project was huge – larger than any system that had been delivered.” Tom Cantero Managing Director

As the first company to commercialize hollow fiber membranes for air separation onboard ships, Air Products AS, Norway (APAS) is a true pioneer. Managing Director Tom Cantero discusses  his company’s technology, developments and outlook. A manufacturer of gas processing systems for offshore, shipboard and land-based use, APAS manages all facets of the membrane process, from basic research, system design, engineering and manufacturing, through installation and service. Since the first membrane system was introduced by APAS in 1984…

Wärtsilä Gas Units Selected for Largest Ever Spar Platform

A new spar platform being built for Statoil's Aasta Hansteen field off the coast of Norway will feature Wärtsilä's Inert Gas and Nitrogen Generator systems, the power solutions company said. The contract has been issued in the first quarter 2014 by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea, the yard building the platform. The Wärtsilä Inert Gas Generator will utilize titanium in its construction, the first time ever that this material has been used in such a system. Titanium was preferred due to its superior corrosion resistance in relation to sea water. Wärtsilä's claims its experience and technical expertise in gas handling systems were critical factors in the award of this contract…

EPA Tier 4 Emission Regulations

Table 1

Implications on U.S. The next round of emission regulations will bring significant impacts to the design, construction, and operation of U.S. commercial and government vessels starting in 2014. The impending EPA Tier 4 regulations directly apply to high and medium-speed diesel engines used in workboats, ferries, small cargo ships, and government vessels. These regulations represent the most significant reduction of marine emission levels to date, specifically in the form of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Natural gas fueled engines present one path to compliance, but not the only path.

Offshore APAC Electrical Equipment Market: New Survey

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan 'Electrical Equipment and Solution for Marine and Offshore Markets in Asia-Pacific', finds that the market earned revenues of US$350.0 million in 2012 and estimates this to reach US$467.4 million in 2017. The main end-user segments are marine vessels and offshore structures. The Asia-Pacific market for electrical equipment for marine and offshore solutions has been concentrated in South Korea, Japan and Singapore. While South Korea and Singapore have been the hubs of the offshore structure building industry, Japan and South Korea are leaders in marine vessel manufacturing. "The shipbuilding industry had experienced a slump in demand for ships due to oversupply and financial constraints among shipbuilders…

Partnerships of Deep-Sea Methane Scavengers Revealed

The sea floor off the coast of , , is home to a diverse assemblage of microbes that scavenge methane from cold deep-sea vents. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have developed a technique to directly capture these cells, lending insight into the diverse symbiotic partnerships that evolved among different species in an extreme environment. The community's interconnected metabolism sheds light on how the anaerobic microbes, which consume nearly 80 percent of the methane leaked from marine sediments, limit oceanic emissions of this potent greenhouse gas. Metagenomic analysis, in which the genetic material of all microorganisms swept from their homes in a sample is sequenced wholesale, yields a plenitude of general information.
