Lankhorst Deepwater Mooring Lines for Liza Unity FPSO

Lankhorst Offshore reports it has been awarded a contract by SBM Offshore to supply the deepwater mooring lines for the Liza Unity Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) for ExxonMobil’s Liza oil field offshore Guyana, South America. This follows the deployment of Lankhorst mooring lines for the Liza Destiny FPSO mooring system also in the Liza field.The Liza Unity FPSO, based on SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward FPSO design, will be spread moored at a water depth of 1,600m with 20 Cabral 512 deepwater mooring lines with a minimum breaking strength of 12,300 kN.

Statoil Picks MacGregor Mooring Systems for Hywind

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won an order for substructure connection mooring systems for the world's first floating offshore wind farm: Statoil's Hywind pilot park in Scotland. MacGregor will be responsible for the delivery of the Pusnes substructure mooring connection system for the pilot project's five floating wind turbines. Delivery of equipment is planned from the second through the fourth quarter of 2016 and installation of the wind turbines is scheduled for 2017. "This contract represents a step change for MacGregor in terms of entering a new industry sector," says Jan Martin Grindheim, Director, Sales and Business Development, MacGregor Offshore Mooring Systems. "The project hinges on applying proven technology in new applications.

MacGregor Signs Contract with Shell

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has signed a contract with Shell for a Pusnes permanent mooring system. Contract value is around EUR 20 million.   "We are very happy to finalise this large contract," says Jan Martin Grindheim, Vice President, Offshore Mooring Systems at MacGregor. "It is strategically important to maintain our market share in the Gulf of Mexico and to maintain our position as a supplier of high-end offshore mooring systems," notes Mr Grindheim.

Lankhorst Wins Big Spar Mooring Contract

Offshore rope manufacturer Lankhorst Ropes has been awarded a contract by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Technip USA consortium (HHITECH) to supply the mooring lines for Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen Spar platform to be located in the Norwegian sector of the Norwegian Sea. According to Lankhorst, it is the largest single order for deepwater mooring ropes, and believed to be the largest ever order in the global synthetic fiber rope industry. Samson Awarded 11th Patent

Samson was awarded a patent titled Line Structure for Marine Use in Contaminated Environments. This technology was developed by Samson while partnering with Delmar Systems on its patented Omni-Max gravity-installed anchor system. Proper deployment of the new anchor design would have been hampered by the use of traditional anchor chain in this application. The additional weight of chain affects the trajectory of the anchor causing insufficient embedment into the seabed. To address this issue, Samson engineers developed a synthetic alternative that replaces the anchor chain. One of the biggest challenges in this application was protection of the synthetic rope from the damaging effects of outside contaminants it comes in contact with during use.

EBDG-Designed Sixty Five Roses Enters Service

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC (EBDG) recently announced the launch of the flagship vessel in its series of oil barge designs for Harley Marine Services (HMS). With a length of 422 ft and a beam of 76 ft, the Sixty Five Roses has a capacity of 83,600 barrels. The vessel features a cargo heating system; two hose handling cranes, one of which is a jumbo crane for lifting offshore submarine hose connections and five hydraulic mooring winches designed for offshore mooring systems. Aker Solutions Contracts for Petrobras

Aker Solutions has been awarded two contracts for Petrobras' P-55 project in Brazil for the design and supply of an Aker Solutions' Pusnes offshore mooring system(TM) and a Pusnes riser pull-in system(TM). The total contract value for Aker Solutions is approximately NOK 130 million. The contracts consist of 16 roller RamWinches(TM) and several specially designed winches and wire routing system for a semi production unit owned by Petrobras PN BV. The semi production unit will be built at the new Rio Grande shipyard in Brazil. After completion it will be located on the Roncador Field offshore Brazil. Aker Solutions has developed the Pusnes RamWinch(TM) design which is an innovative, cost effective, on-vessel mooring solution.

Sideways to Swimmers: Unusual Tank Testing

Offshore supply vessels, passenger vessels, yachts. How much power is required and how will they ride in seas? These are the questions Gerry Stensgaard, P.Eng, and the staff at the Ocean Engineering Centre (OEC) of Vizon Scitec (formerly BC Research) usually answer. But over the years naval architects and others have asked for answers to some unusual questions. "They are open minded about special testing," says Tim Nolan, P.E., Naval Architect at Tim Nolan Marine Design, PC. Special testing might mean a peculiar test of a typical craft. Or it might be basic resistance and seakeeping tests for an unusual craft; which might seem easy, but the test setup can become difficult. Located in Vancouver, Canada, the OEC consists of a 220 by 12 ft.
