Miss Berdie Gets a Makeover

The new Miss Berdie maintains her graceful lines.

When she came into the Fred Wahl shipyard in Reedsport, Oregon, the Miss Berdie was a fine looking boat with a bright red hull. When she left the yard this summer she was still a fine looking red vessel but bigger and better. After taking the 77 by 27.8 by 11.5-foot boat apart, the crew at Fred Wahl’s, working with a design by Hockema & Whalen Associates, put her back together with a 39-foot beam, a 12.7-foot molded depth and an overall registered length of 80.8 feet. In order to keep regulatory requirements regarding the overall length…

New STAUFF Mini Water Vac Cleans Oil Continuously

The STAUFFMini Water Vacpurifies hydraulic system oil, eliminating water, gas and particulate matter. The purified oil satisfies the most stringent quality requirements. The STAUFFMini Water Vac dehydrates and cleans most types of oils such as lubricating, hydraulic, transformer and switch oils while it neither removes nor alters oil additives. The water removal process is based on pure vacuum evaporation inside a vacuum chamber at a maximum temperature of +65 °C / +149 °F. Solid particle removal is achieved through a field-proven STAUFF Systems Micro Filter.

MOL Develops CO2 Reducing Additive

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced development of a carbon-dioxide-reducing, efficiency-boosting fuel additive for merchant ships, in conjunction with Taihokohzai Co., Ltd., Japan’s largest fuel additive manufacturer. MOL will use the new additive, called Taicrush HD, on its operated vessels to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. Taicrush HD improves the ignition performance and sludge (carbon and sediment) dispersion in heavy fuel oils. It reduces ignition delay and afterburning time by more than 30%. Compared to conventional fuel oil additives for large-scale vessels, Taicrush HD promotes improved combustion and reduced fuel consumption.

Exxon, Mobil Address EU Concerns Regarding Merger

Exxon Corp. and Mobil Corp. have moved to address European Commission concerns about their merger in the natural gas sector in Germany and over an existing European joint venture between Mobil and BP Amoco Plc, a Commission spokesman said. The Commission was also no longer concerned that the $80 billion merger and a rival deal between BP Amoco and Atlantic Richfield would result in excessive consolidation in oil exploration, the spokesman added, paving the way for regulatory approval in the European Union. The news that the Commission has dropped fears the two oil mergers could significantly reduce competition in the upstream sector…
