Kuehne + Nagel has expanded its sustainability offering for global seafreight services: As of May 2017, the total amount of CO2 emissions generated by seafreight ship-ments is printed on each invoice assisting shippers to identify their carbon footprint from transport operations. With this initiative Kuehne + Nagel customers are able to improve the analysis, reporting and management of CO2 emissions caused by their transport chain and thus achieve long-term reduction of the environmental impact. For the calculation of the shipment CO2 data imprinted on its freight invoice, Kuehne + Nagel is using the data of its online Global Seafreight Carbon Calculator (GSCC), providing instant overviews of CO2, SOx and NOx emissions for FCL and LCL movements from door-to-door.

Wärtsilä and PGS Geophysical AS have signed a service agreement that makes Wärtsilä the preferred service supplier for engines and other Wärtsilä equipment. According to the agreement, Wärtsilä will take care of the maintenance of engines and propulsion systems on board PGS's fleet of 8 seismic vessels, securing maximum uptime as well as safe and economic operations. PGS's seismic vessels are used for mapping and analysing the subsurface beneath the ocean floor for oil and gas exploration around the world. The 3-year-agreement was signed in December 2016 and it includes an option for two extra years. In the first phase of the contract Wärtsilä will optimise the operations and maintenance of the Wärtsilä engines and propulsion systems installed on board PGS's vessels.

MAN Diesel & Turbo signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the China Classification Society (CCS) on December 1, 2015, during Marintec China 2015. The Agreement provides for the strengthening of the cooperation between the two companies in Intelligent Ship research with regards to data exchange, online monitoring and online service. Wayne Jones – recently appointed as Executive Board Member for Sales from January 1, 2016 – MAN Diesel & Turbo, and Sun Feng – Vice President – CCS, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.

The recently introduced Wärtsilä 31 engine, which has been acknowledged by Guinness World Records as being the world's most efficient four-stroke diesel engine, has been selected to power a new generation icebreaker currently under construction at the PJSC Vyborg Shipyard. The ship is being built on behalf of FSUE Atomflot, the enterprise of ROSATOM, the State Corporation for Atomic Energy. The order was signed in September. When delivered, the icebreaker will serve the Yamal LNG project in Sabetta, located northeast of the Yamal peninsular in Russia. The project is one of the largest industrial undertakings in the Arctic. Fuel efficiency and reliability were the two major deciding factors behind the choice of the Wärtsilä 31 engine.

ZIM integrated shipping services has announced the launching of a new monitoring, tracking and security services package, specifically designed for valuable and sensitive cargo stowed in reefer containers. The service allows customers to closely monitor their cargo's status, change settings remotely and intervene to prevent damages. The announcement was made at the Cool Chain & Temperature Controlled Logistics Europe conference in Frankfurt, where it will be showcased between January 26th and 29th. ZIM's system  provides a tailored solution for customers shipping  sensitive cargos.

Batangas Container Terminal (BCT) set a new record in 2014 for containers handled, says its operator Asian Terminals, Inc. (ATI). Port handled over 98,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) in 2014, its highest total ever. The port operator added that BCT ended 2014 with consolidated throughput of 1.02 million TEUs, up 8.6%. BCT has continuously expanded its role as a comprehensive gateway for Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), providing shippers direct connectivity to Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia and other global hubs through vessels regularly calling the port weekly. Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading ship power solution provider, has signed a long term service agreement with Eidesvik Offshore, Norway, for the supply of maintenance services for the seismic vessel Oceanic Vega. The service agreement is expected to considerably reduce maintenance costs for the owner, while providing uninterrupted availability and high levels of reliability. Wastewater Resources, Inc., an international provider of wastewater treatment systems and services, announced the debut of their new customizable, real-time, online monitoring system, the AquaTex LiquID. This equipment allows ship operators to monitor in real time, on-line, the BOD, COD, Suspended Solids, Fecal Coliform, and Ammonia without the burden and time lag of traditional lab samples. From a simple monitoring unit located aboard ship, the unit can uplink to any authorized web connected device for a real-time readout of the ships discharge water quality.

Efficiency and safety were the key topics at the third MACS3 User Conference. Taking part were 35 representatives of 25 companies, from nine different countries. Of particular interest to them was a highlight: the official premiere of the new StowMan software. StowMan opens up a new dimension in stowage planning, by significantly speeding it up and efficiently optimizing it at the same time. It was developed in cooperation with Professor Rune Møller Jensen of the IT University of Copenhagen. The second highlight was the opening of the Fleet Operation Center (FOC), which serves to increase efficiency and prevent accidents. Furthermore, INTERSCHALT offered participants a look at brand-new features of the MACS3 loading computer, such as the improved TROP software module for trim optimization.

By any yardstick, remote monitoring is fleet optimization in the new millennium. You’re all over it: optimizing your fleet. But, what does that mean? For some operators, it means making sure their mix of vessels meets the needs of their customers and the prevailing winds of the economy. For others, it entails reading the tea leaves just right when it comes to deciding on time charters or dipping one’s toes into the spot markets. Still others focus on the closely linked Holy Grail of reduced bunker consumption and minimal stack emissions. For all of these cool customers, however, “remote monitoring” will also be part of that equation. That said; defining what remote monitoring means is another thing altogether.
