Austal Launches USNS Brunswick
Austal launched the recently christened USNS Brunswick (JHSV 6) at its manufacturing facility in Mobile, Ala. With the 338-foot Joint High Speed Vessel entering the water for the first time, the ship will undergo final outfitting and testing before sea trials and delivery to the U.S. Navy later this year. USNS Brunswick is the sixth JHSV Austal has launched as part of a $1.6 billion 10-ship block buy contract. The JHSV provides the U.S. Department of Defense a multi-use platform, capable of supporting rapid intra-theater deployment of personnel, equipment and supplies. The JHSV transports medium-size operational units with their vehicles, or can be reconfigured as a troop transport for an infantry battalion, allowing units to transit operational distances while maintaining unit integrity.

1897- Federal Civil Service rules were applied to Life-Saving Service (under Executive Order May 6, 1896). 1916-The official birthday of Coast Guard aviation. On this date LT Elmer F. Stone reported to Pensacola Naval Air Station for flight training. He was the Coast Guard's first naval aviator. 1945- Invasion of Okinawa in the Ryukyu Islands commenced. In all, seven Coast Guard-manned transports, 29 LSTs, the cutters Bibb and Woodbine, and 12 Coast Guard-manned LCI(L)s participated in the bloodiest invasion ever undertaken by the U.S. Over 13,000 Americans were killed and another 36,000 were wounded during the conquest of this Japanese possession. 1946- A tsunami swept away the light station at Scotch Cap, Alaska, killing the station's entire five-man crew. They were: BMC Anthony L.

U.S. Navy Commissions USS Iwo Jima
The USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7), the U.S. Navy's and Marine Corps' newest large-deck amphibious assault ship, left the Pensacola Naval Air Station for her homeport in Norfolk, Va., following commissioning ceremonies here June 30. The new ship, produced in Pascagoula, Miss., by Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Northrop Grumman company, will become the newest member of Amphibious Group Two. "With a crew of about 1,000 sailors keeping order and helping our allies, this will be the best the United States of America has to offer," Gen. Michael J. Williams, USMC, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, said of the USS IWO JIMA. "The photograph of the Marines raising the flag at Suribachi has become the icon of the United States Marine Corps.
