SUPSHIP San Diego Completes Smart Ship and All Electric EDSRA for USS Mobile Bay (CG 53)

USS MOBILE BAY (CG 53) recently completed an eight-month Extended Dry-docking Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA) at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California. The highlight of this availability was the successful installation of the SMART SHIP and All-Electric alterations. This is the first time that both of these actions have been performed simultaneously. The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIP) San Diego, serving as the Naval Supervising Authority (NSA), provided oversight for this lengthy overhaul and headed up the extensive integrated team who managed all repairs and alterations. develop their modified manning levels. As it becomes abundantly clear that a major injection of dollars is not imminent for the U.S. Naval shipbuilding sector, industry leaders met last week to mull ideas on getting more for less. Several hundred people gathered at a recent Plenary Session of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) to hear shipbuilding industry executives and Navy brass discuss how to produce more ships for the same dollar. Both agreed they must work together to achieve this goal. "We are not making it in terms of a 300-ship Navy," said Vice Admiral Pete Nanos, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command. Rear Adm. Balisle Tapped as Next NAVSEA Commander

Navy Rear Adm. Phillip M. Balisle has been nominated as the next commander of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in Washington D.C., according to an announcement made by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on June 11, 2002. Upon Senate confirmation, Balisle will also be promoted to the rank of vice admiral as he assumes command of the Navy's largest systems command. Balisle, a native of Idabel, Okla., is currently serving as Director, Surface Warfare Division on the Chief of Naval Operations staff at the Pentagon. He was commissioned in 1970 after graduating from Oklahoma State University. At sea, he commanded the destroyer USS Kidd (DDG 993), the cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) and the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Battle Group. He also previously served as NAVSEA's vice commander.

NAVSEA Displays New Technology
