Shipyard Boss Abseils Down Drydock

UK shipyard, A&P managing director, Peter Child tested his nerves when he joined a dozen others to abseil down the largest dry dock on the UK’s south coast to raise money for charities. Mr Child and Adrian Richards, Chief Executive of BF Adventure in Penryn, were the first to test the ropes 50 feet above the huge dry dock at A&P Falmouth, which is 40m wide and 253m long – the size of two Wembley football pitches. The two companies share the same vision for supporting young people in Cornwall, including a focus on apprenticeships and the opportunities they provide. The event, which raised money for BF Adventure and All As One Orphanage in Sierra Leone, A&P’s charity of the year, also celebrated the ongoing relationship between A&P and BF Adventure.

Ship repair company A&P Falmouth, located in the south-west of England has won a major contract for repair and drydock modification work to the historic steamship 'SS Shieldhall', which is normally based in Southampton. SS Shieldhall is the largest steamship of her type in Europe, and is included in the National Historic Fleet, having been built and launched on the Clyde in 1955, to a classic pre-WW2 design. The vessel had a long and successful first career with Glasgow Corporation – year round, carrying treated sludge out to sea and, in the summer, taking passengers on pleasure trips.

New Accreditations for A&P Falmouth

A&P Falmouth has earned two new accreditations, enforcing its position as one of the country’s leading ship repair facilities. Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI) has certified A&P Falmouth’s operations as conforming to the requirements of BS EN ISO 14001-1996 for environmental management and OHSAS 18001-1999 for occupational health & safety. Trevor Heath, A&P Falmouth’s Quality & General Services Manager, said that the latest certifications – which follow the yard’s achievement of the ISO 9001-2000 standard for quality management in August 2002 – not only makes A&P Falmouth the only ship repair yard in the country to have been awarded all three certifications, but is also a major milestone in the yard’s continuous improvement objectives.
