Coatings manufacturer Hempel announced that it is investing in a new research and development center focused solely on passive fire protection coatings. Located just outside Barcelona in Spain, the center is due to open toward the end of 2018. Passive fire protection (PFP) coatings are increasingly important in the construction and oil and gas industries. Applied to structural steel in large buildings and industrial oil and gas installations, the coatings expand to form an insulating layer of carbon char when exposed to high temperatures.

Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG2) has completed its third deployment into the Black Sea under the command of Captain Ramazan Kesgin, Turkish Navy. The session, “Fire Protection of Steel,” provided an overview of the causes of fires in hydrocarbon facilities, the difference between active and passive fire protection (PFP), and the essential role intumescent coatings play in achieving the fire resistance ratings required for a sound PFP system. Intumescent coatings rapidly swell in reaction to a fire, forming a thick char barrier that protects a steel substrate by reducing heat transfer for several hours before structural failure could occur.
